On way to A&E with 3yo

Posting here for traffic. 3yo with high temp, legs hurting, head hurting, wants all lights off, pale, clammy, stomach hurts. In car on the way now. 111 really good and he seems to have perked up since calpol. They're worried about his leg pain and light sensitivity. I know my son and think he just wanted the lights off (hoping!) but not taking any risks. Still have a horrid gut feeling that I'll embarrass myself and he will be fine when we get there. Feel a bit sick. Anyone around?

Even if he gets better on the way, it’s always the right call to seek help with those symptoms. My toddler had exactly those symptoms, got better on the way to hospital, but the pediatric unit still made him spend the night under observation because of the light sensitivity. So they will def want you there

Polyputthekettleon · 21/02/2022 23:39

You are definitely doing the right thing. Hope your ds is feeling better now OP 🤞

user375432 · 21/02/2022 23:39

Fingers crossed it's nothing serious OP. I currently have Covid and I've had awful leg pain. Noticed a few posts on the Covid board saying it was a common symptom, so it could be that rather than Meningitis. Hope you aren't waiting too long.

Amnotamug · 21/02/2022 23:40

A mother instinct is the best call 💕I hope your little one gets a good check and home soon.Xx

SallyAnn32 · 21/02/2022 23:53

You're doing the right thing. My DD was blue lighted to A&E at 2yo for similar symptoms. When we got there she went from being floppy to saying hello to everyone we passed. Turned out to be a bad ear infection. I felt really embarrassed but the nurses were very reassuring and said they see it all the time and they'd rather be safe than sorry. Hope your LO is ok x

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2022 00:42

well, I hope he does embarrass you and it turns out to be nothing... because you don't really want it to be something serious..

Emmelina · 22/02/2022 01:15

I’d rather be embarrassed by the little lad swinging off the trolleys having gained his second wind than be very ill. Sending hugs and hoping your radio silence simply means you’ve both gone home and crashed :)

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 22/02/2022 01:56

I hope your little one is OK OP, I imagine that even if he is and you are back home, it will take a while for you to get him settled. So I am hoping that you are all back home now, and fast asleep in bed. Please let us know how things went when you have a minute in the morning. 💐

thaegumathteth · 22/02/2022 02:23

Hope he's ok

Sexnotgender · 22/02/2022 07:56

How is he?

Hadharra · 22/02/2022 10:13

Thanks all. He's with my mum now, still on hospital. His fever went so high he was hallucinating. He's on a drip but doing much better. I've come home to get some of his toys. Thanks for all your lovely messages.

Hi @Hadharra good to hear that he is doing better & that in time he’ll soon be fit & well back at home.

Hope that you can get some rest today.

Mostlyjustrunning · 22/02/2022 10:53

Glad he’s doing better. Hope he’s out soon Smile

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 22/02/2022 11:23

Sounds like he is in the right place.
I had something similar with my DS only 16 months old at the time, it was last September.

He was 40c and his temp was only coming down for a few hours with calpol and would go back up again.
We took him to hospital and they gave him abs for suspected urine infection and we took him home, but later that night he declined again.

It got to the point he was having rigors and seemed really distressed, lethargic the next morning, so we took him to back to hospital and he went straight on the drip.
He had a low grade fever before this for several weeks on and off at this point so we were concerned.

Never did find out what caused it but for all we know if we didn't take him and he hadn't gotten iv abs he could have gotten sepsis so better to be safe with the little ones.

HogDogKetchup · 22/02/2022 11:29

Awww you did the right thing then op. Hope he’s better soon, get some rest x

changenametimeagain · 22/02/2022 15:44

Sending well wishes for your brave little man OP. How are you feeling?

godmum56 · 22/02/2022 15:54

he is in the right place and you are a stellar Mum

hedgehogger1 · 22/02/2022 18:34

Get them to check for a UTI. My son was the same. Apparently it's rarer in boys so not one of the first things they check. If it is a UTI he should have a follow up ultrasound to check there's no underlying issues.

Tonsiltrouble · 22/02/2022 19:24

I’d be surprised if they haven’t checked. I have two boys and being given a receptacle and the task of getting a urine sample is usually one of the first things that happens at our a&e

affairsofdragons · 22/02/2022 19:52

Hope he bounces back quickly, OP. Flowers

Giraffesandbottoms · 22/02/2022 20:22

How is he now?

Unpopular37 · 23/02/2022 07:30

Genuine question: how despite worrying about an ill child, and being on your way to hospital, does one have thoughts collected enough to start a new thread on MN?

Raindancer411 · 23/02/2022 07:38

@Hadharra Glad to see the update and hope he is home soon.

Because I was in a taxi and needed support and I KNEW I would get it here. Mumsnet helped me leave my abusive ex partner. You have no idea how much a forum like this helps people like me who struggle to reach out. It doesn't make me a bad or absent minded mother. I needed support.
