On way to A&E with 3yo

Hadharra · 21/02/2022 20:52

Posting here for traffic. 3yo with high temp, legs hurting, head hurting, wants all lights off, pale, clammy, stomach hurts. In car on the way now. 111 really good and he seems to have perked up since calpol. They're worried about his leg pain and light sensitivity. I know my son and think he just wanted the lights off (hoping!) but not taking any risks. Still have a horrid gut feeling that I'll embarrass myself and he will be fine when we get there. Feel a bit sick. Anyone around?

absolutely the right thing to do! i would have done the same

please update us when you can!

PrinnyPree · 21/02/2022 21:41

I would 100% take my child to hospital with these symptoms. I hope it is nothing but the advice given has been great so far, like asking for bloods and calling 999 later if you get sent home and their symptoms worsen. Xxx

ThelmaDinkley · 21/02/2022 21:43

Hope your little one gets well soon. 💐

Wagsandclaws · 21/02/2022 21:44

Did a similar thing with my ds who was 5 at the time.

He was admitted and put on oxygen, luckily it wasn't meningitis but it was a nasty virus.

I hope your dc is ok and you get some answers. You are absolutely doing the right thing!

hellithurt · 21/02/2022 21:45

@FairWindClearSailing

Much better to go and embarrass yourself than not go and it turn out to be something serious.

You've done the right thing, hope he's ok x

Totally this!

I hope all is fine.

Little tyke will probably be as right as rain in the morning!

whataballbag · 21/02/2022 21:46

You've done the right thing.

People do complain about 111 being 'over cautious' often, but it's for good reason. Especially with symptoms like these.

hedgehogger1 · 21/02/2022 21:50

Hope all is well. I took my then toddler son to a&e with similar symptoms, they sent us away and he was back in a few hours in an ambulance after having had a febrile convulsion. Turned out to be a UTI in the end

Prescottdanni123 · 21/02/2022 21:54

With those symptoms you are doing the right thing in going to A&E. If it turns out to be nothing serious then great! Nothing to be worried about. Praying that your son gets seen quickly and feels better soon.

HogDogKetchup · 21/02/2022 21:55

Hope he’s ok.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 21/02/2022 21:55

Absolutely should be seen ASAP, good luck, get well soon.

bloodywhitecat · 21/02/2022 21:56

Good luck OP, I would be doing exactly what you are doing.

ShowMeTheSugar · 21/02/2022 21:57

You've done the right thing. Much better to go and find it's nothing than delay when it's something.
Fingers crossed you're all OK and better soon.

WonderfulYou · 21/02/2022 21:57

I hope everything is ok OP.

I delayed taking my DD to A&E when she was in a similar state and waited to book a gp appointment.
Luckily she was fine (I can’t remember what it was) but the doctor ticked me off and he said it’s better to ‘waste someone’s time’ than have her become seriously ill or die.

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/02/2022 21:58

Better to be embarrassed than take a risk.
As a nurse I advise to always get checked if you are worried.
Hope everything is okay Flowers

PanickedE · 21/02/2022 22:02

I hope he’s okay!

Seeingadistance · 21/02/2022 22:02

Another one here to tell you you're doing the right thing - no reason to be embarrassed at all - and I hope he's ok.

FortniteBoysMum · 21/02/2022 22:03

Always play it safe. We had an ambulance a few times with ds1 due to high temps and they rashes. They told me when I said 111 didn't need to send an ambulance as I thought it was viral that you can never be too careful. They said hospitals would rather see a thousand cases of over reacting parents than one who reacts too late. I hope your little one is OK.

Tonsiltrouble · 21/02/2022 22:04

Just weighing in with my experience of taking my kids to a&e - a bunch of times it has been totally justified. Sometimes it’s been overkill.

I think our list of sensible a&e decisions are: uti in a baby (x2, same child, 1x IV abx, 1x oral), norovirus in a baby, sepsis from an infected lymph node (IV abx), tonsillitis not responding to antibiotics (x2, different children, full blood work up, change of abx, steroids x1).

Our list of less sensible a&e visits includes: toddler with hand foot and mouth (but had screamed solidly for 6 hours), child with a sudden limp (we allowed a flat footed child to run around on sand wearing crocs all day), child with severe abdominal pain (sent by 111, nothing wrong).

I’ve never been made to feel silly. It’s totally ok for you to say I’m here because I’m out of my depth with this illness and I’m sufficiently concerned for my child in a way that is not normal compared with other times they have been unwell.

affairsofdragons · 21/02/2022 22:05

You're absolutely doing the right thing getting him checked out. Hope he's ok Flowers

feelingfree17 · 21/02/2022 22:07

So doing the right thing.
I had a similar situation with DC about the same age. A team were assembled at a cottage hospital at some un godly hour. DC perked up considerably on the way, and by the time we arrived she was fine. Dr did ask if I was a first time Mum. It is always better to be safe than sorry
Hope all is ok

GeraneousGiraffe · 21/02/2022 22:09

We refer to 'the magic doors' - so many people adult and child seem to be so improved just coming into the hospital. No decent nurse or doctor will ever mind someone coming in with a genuine concern.

Hope everything goes great. I took my son in after a prolonged seizure (one off, febrile seizure) when he was two and by the time we got into resus he was waving at the nurses and playing with the equipment ..

Queenie6655 · 21/02/2022 22:11

Sending lots of good wishes xxxxx

BBCONEANDTWO · 21/02/2022 22:11

Please keep us up to date and hoping everything goes well.

PullingAtTeeth · 21/02/2022 22:11

Hope he’s ok. Definitely best to get him checked.
An a and e doctor once told me when I took my dc in who miraculously perked up that he’d far rather see a well child than a sick child so if in doubt get them checked

Gonnagetgoing · 21/02/2022 22:12

Hope he’s ok and best to get checked out Flowers
