On way to A&E with 3yo

Hadharra · 21/02/2022 20:52

Posting here for traffic. 3yo with high temp, legs hurting, head hurting, wants all lights off, pale, clammy, stomach hurts. In car on the way now. 111 really good and he seems to have perked up since calpol. They're worried about his leg pain and light sensitivity. I know my son and think he just wanted the lights off (hoping!) but not taking any risks. Still have a horrid gut feeling that I'll embarrass myself and he will be fine when we get there. Feel a bit sick. Anyone around?

sending a handhold and hope you get seen soon. You are doing absolutely the right thing.

HoldenCaulfieldismyhomeboy · 21/02/2022 22:20

Oh OP, thinking of you. We had taken our son to the drs for an emergency appt as he had high temp, lethargic and light sensitive. She told us to go straight to a&e. It was a bad case if tonsillitis but we suspected meningitis. Thinking of you both x

GalactatingGoddess · 21/02/2022 22:21

Hope all is well OP.
Better to be safe than sorry. X

changenametimeagain · 21/02/2022 22:23

Hope all well Daffodil

AladdinPrincess999 · 21/02/2022 22:23

You are definitely doing the right thing. Big hugs. Flowers

With small children you don’t take chances. They can rebound so quickly but can also deteriorate quickly. I’ll never forget spending a day on a paediatric assessment unit with one of mine and there was a little girl who had been blue lighted in with breathing difficulties, drifting in and out of consciousness etc. She looked awful and you could see how worried her parents were. A few hours later after oxygen she was bouncing around the place and left ages before we were able to. I was shocked at how quickly she recovered.

I hope you have a similar story. It is always very worrying when little ones are poorly.

BoldMove · 21/02/2022 22:27

I'd rather be embarrassed than have a seriously ill child. A n e would rather you took him to have it checked than not. Hope he's OK OP x

Teenagehorrorbag · 21/02/2022 22:27

They will totally think you did the right thing. Did similar with DS around the same age - turned out to be tonsillitis but he's autistic and wasn't very verbal back then. I did feel a bit daft that I hadn't looked at his throat but I had no reason to suspect that, and the doctor was lovely.

111 asked the usual questions and it was their decision to send us - as with you presumably. Fingers crossed it's nothing major - but you are always right to get things checked out as soon as you have a concern.

Good luck!

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 21/02/2022 22:28

You’ve done the right thing 100%

Hope he’s doing ok and you’ve been seen quickly

Tmum2 · 21/02/2022 22:29

Hope little one gets better! We had that happen to us not too long ago. Our toddler had the exact same symptoms. The doctor told us it was an upper respiratory tract infection and sent us home with antibiotics. Turns out it wasn’t and it was actually Hand Foot and Mouth disease - very common in young children especially if they go to nursery. Better to take them to hospital just to make sure!

HollowTalk · 21/02/2022 22:31

It's better for you to be embarrassed at your son being okay then any other scenario. 💐

BulletTrain · 21/02/2022 22:32

Fingers crossed OP. We recently called an ambulance because DS3 was breathless and his inhaler wasn't providing enough relief. He seemed to recover in the ambulance but within an hour he needed oxygen, ECG monitoring, magnesium, a drip... I am so so glad we were already in A&E.

Howtoworkandplay · 21/02/2022 22:35

You are absolutely doing the right thing, never think you are wasting time. Hope you are home soon 💐

ChakaFridaMendips · 21/02/2022 22:40

I wish we’d gone with tonsillitis- he was so hot overnight.
Hope everything’s ok

lazarusb · 21/02/2022 22:46

Better to be safe than sorry. Hope it’s nothing serious and he bounces back very quickly. The doctors won’t mind you getting him properly checked so don’t worry about that.

UniversalAunt · 21/02/2022 22:49

Small children, high temp, pale, clammy, aches, sensitive to light etc. - can go either way very quickly.

Best to be safe than sorry, you are doing the right thing taking him in.

oakleaffy · 21/02/2022 22:54

@Hadharra
Meningitis is always the thing we were told to watch for- ( Photophobia &c and a rash that wouldn’t disappear under pressure from a drinking glass)

You are most definitely doing right thing going to get him checked out.
Best wishes to you all.

KneadingKitty · 21/02/2022 22:56

Following in hope that all will be ok Flowers

Babadook76 · 21/02/2022 23:02

Any updates op?

amoobaa · 21/02/2022 23:13

Hope you’re ok and that he’s being thoroughly checked over and feeling better asap FlowersFlowersFlowersFlowers

nocoolnamesleft · 21/02/2022 23:16

It's the right thing to do. Fingers crossed he continues to perk up, but with that combination of symptoms much safer to get checked out.

ThirdElephant · 21/02/2022 23:19

Hope it's nothing to worry about, OP.

HazelBite · 21/02/2022 23:21

Hope he is okay OP. You have completely done the right thing.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/02/2022 23:24

Hope he's ok OP Thanks

Redsquirrel5 · 21/02/2022 23:31

DD had a temperature, lethargic, complained of her neck hurting and light sensitive.Relayed this to secretary out of hours Doctor - would see her in two hours. I took her in one. She walked to the car and within the 25 minute journey I stopped and she was violently sick, got to surgery just less than an hour since I spoke and thought if he refused to see her I would take her to A &E. It was on the way. She couldn’t walk and his night driver saw and carried her in for me. She was seen next and the GP got a shock and sent us straight to A&E. I’m a Nursery Nurse and thought Meningitis at home yet questioned myself because he thought it was ok to leave her for two hours.

She had a lumber puncture and was in hospital 5/7 days I can’t remember exactly as those days were a very worrying time. She had Meningitis. It took a while to recover and she is left with occasional extreme headaches. She was good at Maths for her age but wasn’t afterwards and a few other things had to be relearned. However she did go to University.

Please always take your child if your gut feeling is that it could be Meningitis. The rash doesn’t often appear until later. I caught DD early and the rash had only a few spots on her ears which the GP said was felt tip. It wasn’t.
Later my friend, who childminded and had a GP’s daughter told her. She was horrified that DD ( who she knew) hadn’t been seen immediately. It turned out he was in the same Practice. There were words said and reviews of practice apparently!

OP I hope your DS is better soon. It is a worry but you have done the right thing. If in doubt go with your feeling too as mums and dads know their own child. Don’t feel you can’t question either if I hadn’t DD might not be here. In my prayers.
