On way to A&E with 3yo

Posting here for traffic. 3yo with high temp, legs hurting, head hurting, wants all lights off, pale, clammy, stomach hurts. In car on the way now. 111 really good and he seems to have perked up since calpol. They're worried about his leg pain and light sensitivity. I know my son and think he just wanted the lights off (hoping!) but not taking any risks. Still have a horrid gut feeling that I'll embarrass myself and he will be fine when we get there. Feel a bit sick. Anyone around?

Ask them to do the bloods. If you're going in (which is definitely, definitely the right thing to do) you'll be waiting ages so you might as well have the whole thing properly checked out - don't let them fob off your concerns

SheWoreYellow · 21/02/2022 21:10

Even if he has totally perked up by the time you get there, you are right to go because he did have those symptoms when you spoke to 111. Smile
I presume they didn’t say ‘if he seems a bit better don’t bother going in’.

It’s usually not meningitis/sepsis etc but you are absolutely right to get it checked. And if it is then he can get started on treatment straight away.

Better to be embarrassed than the alternative OP.

When my DD was 2 - I was at the A&E for the second night in a row. Exasperated Doctor eventually said ‘fine we will X-ray her’. She had pneumonia and was promptly admitted.

AllOfUsAreDead · 21/02/2022 21:11

It's hopefully nothing to worry about, but you're definitely doing the right thing. Best to be safe. Flowers

I took my 4yo to A&E in similar circumstances recently. Complaining about light, headache, fever etc -and just screaming with pain. Obviously by the time I got to A&E calpol had kicked in and he basically seemed fairly fine and he just had a quick check and we were sent on our way. I’m Noor ally reluctant to go to A&E but I take no chances with anything that seems at all like meningitis.

Hope your DS is similarly just has a regular virus but there’s no harm in being cautious.

Lougle · 21/02/2022 21:19

I hope you're being seen. It's always the right thing to take a very poorly child for medical attention.

tkwal · 21/02/2022 21:20

I would have taken mine to A&E with those symptoms. At the very least they can rule out meningitis and sepsis

FavouriteFortnight · 21/02/2022 21:20

Yes my DS actually had meningitis and sepsis as an infant (hence being quite wary of it now!) - but he was started on ABs very very rapidly as a precaution (well before meningitis was confirmed) and he made a complete recovery, he bounced right back.

Violetmo0n · 21/02/2022 21:22

Hope he's ok

QOD · 21/02/2022 21:24

Hope all ok

gingerhairthatshetiedinaplait · 21/02/2022 21:28

Always best to get checked. You're doing the right thing

randomsabreuse · 21/02/2022 21:29

We got sent to A&E when my 5yo with no previous heart issues had an irregular pulse when being checked for a ?UTI at the GPs. Turned out to be nothing but both GP and DH (who is medically trained) heard it at the time, but it had gone off by the time I'd fought my way into the parking at A&E.

Tiredness does sound relevant, my 2 are basically energiser bunnies... but are also not chilled personality wise...

LunarMummy · 21/02/2022 21:29

Always better safe than sorry!

randomsabreuse · 21/02/2022 21:29

Sorry wrong post, good luck at A&E

FairWindClearSailing · 21/02/2022 21:30

Much better to go and embarrass yourself than not go and it turn out to be something serious.

You've done the right thing, hope he's ok x

Quartz2208 · 21/02/2022 21:30

Yes having been there with DS they are great - they were also great the next couple of times he did it as I was still scarred by it all. And the time he did it on holiday.

It is ALWAYS better to get it checked out especially with the symptoms you describe

Landlubber2019 · 21/02/2022 21:33

Take him and hopefully it will be nothing.

I took my child vomiting, pain in head, fever and aversion to light. Arrived at A&E to find he loved watching the flashing ambulance lights! If it's a false alarm, you won't be the first not the last x

AdoraBell · 21/02/2022 21:34

Don’t be embarrassed if nothing wrong, you’re doing the right thing to take him to A&E.

Hope everything turns out okay.

Gingernaut · 21/02/2022 21:34

YANBU

Hope it all works out

DiscoBadgers · 21/02/2022 21:34

I work in a children’s hospital and we’d always rather see a well child than not see a seriously ill one.

Hope all is well, please don’t ever feel embarrassed about attending hospital with your child. My own DS has been “at death’s door”, gone in in an ambulance and then been skipping around A&E eating crisps when we got there - better to be safe than sorry!

Motorina · 21/02/2022 21:35

Clinician here. I never, ever mind when someone brings in a kid with something that turns out to be trivial. How are you to know? Being able to say, "It's nothing to worry about" is a good outcome. Please update us and please never, ever be embarrassed to seek medical care for your child.

334bu · 21/02/2022 21:36

Hope all OK. Flowers

Okla · 21/02/2022 21:37

Hoping he's okay

Icanflyhigh · 21/02/2022 21:37

Definitely the right thing to get him checked with those symptoms. Always better to be safe and feel a bit daft afterwards x

Shufflebumnessie · 21/02/2022 21:38

With those symptoms he absolutely needs to be seen by medical professionals. Trust your gut. I really he recovers very soon Flowers
