Bought a delicious looking ginger and pear cupcake earlier.

Not a mention of the fact there were fucking raisins in it 😡 the little dried buggers just ruin delicious food.

Hot cross buns? Ruined.
Christmas pudding? Ruined.
Christmas cake? Ruined.

YANBU! Why would you ruin a lovely scone or cake with dried fruit?

One of my colleagues makes the most gorgeous shortbread, which she persists in ruining with raisins.
Thats an abomination! Shock

Sexnotgender · 21/02/2022 21:51

@PonyPatter44

Dried fruit is terrible, and ruins everything. One of my colleagues makes the most gorgeous shortbread, which she persists in ruining with raisins. She made it with chocolate chips once, it was like heaven... the next batch was back to bloody wrinkly miserable raisins.
What a monster.

I love them and actually think they make cakes nicer. I can't understand why so many people hate them.

Blackmagicqueen · 21/02/2022 21:53

Chillian flame juicy raisins are delicious, esp on cereal. Sultanas however are disturbing. Oh and despise dried banana chips too!

Colinthedog · 21/02/2022 21:54

Agree 100% OP. It’s the dried fruit in scones that upsets me the most. So many times I’ve looked forward to a nice afternoon tea, desperately hoping that this time there will be a plain scone option. There never is, and I have to pick out the raisins every time 😢 And I bloody love a (plain) scone with jam and clotted cream, delicious.

whatisheupto · 21/02/2022 21:56

Am I the only one here who hates dried fruit because it, ahem, 'interferes' with my digestive system? I have learnt to avoid the stuff!

MissSteak · 21/02/2022 21:57

@Summerhillsquare

Nooooo, bring me sly cake, fat rascals, Chorley cakes, and Welsh cakes all day long!
Eccles cakes are nicer than Chorley cakes ^^
  • & I’m from Chorley!
NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 21/02/2022 21:57

Nope.
Fruit curry, mmm my favourite.
Mince pies, yes.
Scones, lovely.
Pancakes with lemon juice, sugar and raisins.. Delightful.
Hot cross buns toasted with butter.. Heaven.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/02/2022 22:10

I hate mince pies, Xmas cake and fruit cake in general— although do like hot cross buns and tea cakes

mytwocats · 21/02/2022 22:12

I’ll just binge on dried fruit absolutely love it, never mi the cake or whatever just keep it under lock or it’s gone

Noisyneighneigh · 21/02/2022 22:20

Well clearly you've never had the pleasure of a freshly toasted hot cross bun with lots of butter in a lovely melty pool or a delicious carrot cake. It has its place in baking. What's really horrible is getting some sort of sweet roll, biscuit or pastry and thinking it's chocolate but actually it's fucking raisins. Now that is bitterly disappointing.

Noisyneighneigh · 21/02/2022 22:22

I will not eat fruit scones though. That's a no-no.

Hotfootit · 21/02/2022 22:46

Are you my sister, OP?
She hates dried fruit too. She gave away all her wedding cake, much to her DH’s sadness. He and I love a good fruit cake.

Crinkle77 · 21/02/2022 22:59

Yes it's absolutely disgusting!

GirlOfTudor · 21/02/2022 23:04

I couldn't agree more!!!
I once purchased a sandwich in an airport. I was tired and didn't read the ingredients. Turns out it was coronation chicken, which I didn't realise at the time meant chicken and dried fruit 🤮

TrashyPanda · 21/02/2022 23:08

@Minikievs

Totally agree. My sister and I used to call fruit cake etc "dead fly cake" Ruins everything. Especially sultanas
I loathe any kind of dried fruit. Cannot eat anything with dried fruit in it as I hate the taste and the texture.

There were horrible dried fruit slices called “fly cemeteries” when I was a kid.

Littlemissprosecco · 21/02/2022 23:10

Seems dried fruit is like marmite!
But that’s another thread

100% YES
QueenOfHiraeth · 21/02/2022 23:13

I hate dried fruit, it all tastes like rusty metal to me .

If Satan shat rabbit droppings they would be raisins.
There is so much food ruined by the addition of these nasty little parcels of evil
I have found my people here Grin

Kite22 · 21/02/2022 23:18

@Sockbogies

I ordered a yummy sticky toffee pudding with custard in a restaurant.

Very excited about pudding arrival.

Until I discovered AN EVIL HERD/CLUSTER/SWARM of sultanas nesting in the sponge.
Or raisins.
Or currants.
Don't know, don't care. The only joyful thing about that pudding was the custard.

I hear you sister.

I mean, what part of "sticky toffee" indicates that this is going to be a pudding ruined by dried fruit ?

I don't mind people putting whatever they like in mince pies, Christmas Cake, Christmas pudding etc, as it is expected, and therefore I am not going to go near it with a barge pole. What I object to is the people who put dried fruit into things you are expecting to be nice.
At a coffee morning last year, I took a bite of this gorgeous, chocolatey traybake / tiffin thing and was disgusted to find various dried fruits had been put in it. Envy

BortLicencePlate · 21/02/2022 23:23

Totally agree OP. When I was little I used to get a huge bar of Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut every year from a neighbour…..not to sound ungrateful but WHY give that to a child? Surely plain Dairy Milk is the way to go. My DM loved it so it always got eaten but raisins in chocolate Envy

LemonViolet · 21/02/2022 23:23

Hmm am in fence here, because Not All Dried Fruits:

✅Apricots in a tagine
✅Cranberries in schmancy Wensleydale cheese
✅Blueberries in a muffin
✅Strawberries in granola (or anything, dried strawbs are actual edible heaven)
✅Sultanas in couscous
✅Coronation anything

❌Raisins in cookies
❌Mixed fruit and peel in cakes
❌Banana….just no….but then it’s foul before it’s dried anyway
❌Raisins in iced or other types of buns
❌Garibaldi biscuits
❌Raisins in anything else as well
❌Raisins

Apart from, actually, Graze does this snack that is orange juice soaked raisins with dark chocolate and macadamia nuts, and it totally tastes like a Jaffa cake. I’d still rather have an actual Jaffa cake tho and it’d probably have less fat/sugar than the juice/raisin/choc/nut combo.

LemonViolet · 21/02/2022 23:24

I am ON the fucking fence.

Faircastle · 21/02/2022 23:26

I eat and enjoy fresh fruit.
But I am not willing to eat its mummified remains.

And that's before you consider the aesthetic issues (most dried fruit looks like spiders with the legs pulled off).

ninjafoodienovice · 21/02/2022 23:28

When you are gluten intolerant and they put feckin raisins in the (only thing you can eat) rice salad and don't get me started on onions. Also what is it with fruit and meat, gammon and pineapple anyone ConfusedHmm
