Curling team jumping for joy photo

Magnificent performance from the women’s curling team but AIBU to have been irked by the photo of the team “jumping for joy” in the way we see (usually - or possibly only - girls) photographed fake celebrating their GCSE or A-level results? I found it patronising and was cross enough to email the BBC about it (& I’m not in the habit of doing that sort of thing) but I now see one of the team used the photo themselves on twitter. So WIBU?

Here's a photo of Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds jumping very high for joy at the prospect of setting off to do some Olympic curling. But maybe someone should have told them only Jen was allowed to jump on account of being a girl?

I’m embarrassed for you that you actually emailed the BBC!! You’re THAT person, crazy 😜

ThinWomansBrain · 20/02/2022 22:49

@Florenz

Who is the 5th woman in the picture? A substitute?
whoops - did no one count the played on the pitch/field/whatever one curls on?

At least it wasn't a photo of them wasting champagne - or is that just racing drivers?

slimshady18 · 20/02/2022 22:53

This is the fucking funniest thing I have ever seen on Mumsnet. Get a grip you actual weirdo I cannot even believe this is real.

AngelinaFibres · 20/02/2022 23:07

I have been ill with covid for 10 days. I have watched every winter Olympics sport. It has been fabulous. The curling teams seem to have been competing every day of the whole 2 weeks. No one has worked harder for that medal. They were a brilliant team and they absolutely earned the one and only gold medal of team GB. I doubt they will ever know what you think and they certainly wouldn't care.

AngelinaFibres · 20/02/2022 23:11

@Uafasach

Honestly OP, a simple Google Image search shows lots of photos of boys jumping for joy after exam results.
I believe there is a photo of a mens rowing team at the summer Olympics who are clearly very very pleased with themselves for winning gold. Knob-tastic you might say.

May I suggest a hobby of some sort OP?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 20/02/2022 23:54

The Japanese silver medalists held hands and jumped onto the podium

Attention seekers

@AngelinaFibres

😳😳😳
Goodness, I think I prefer the jumping.
JustLyra · 21/02/2022 01:39

@Florenz

Who is the 5th woman in the picture? A substitute?
@Florenz She’s the alternate. She’d have stepped in if someone couldn’t play.

She also did a lot of the grunt work before matches like testing stone weights to pair them up and the likes. Vital part of the team

youdialwetile · 21/02/2022 04:32

I was more annoyed the commentator kept calling them "girls". They never talked about the "boys" curling - they were "men".

And they also talked about how one of the "girls worked through the pandemic because she is a nurse" but they "didn't know if any of the other girls worked".

Hmm
JustLyra · 21/02/2022 05:17

I get your point about the “girls” thing @youdialwetile, but in their defence about the working thing - they did get stick earlier in the tournament by talking about how the funding had allowed them all to solely focus on curling etc and how different it was to previously when people had to juggle jobs with training.

Vicky Wright did go back to full time nursing during the pandemic and only went part time again when it was insisted upon as part of being in that team (think around the European championships) for the Olympic build up.

Supersee · 21/02/2022 05:34

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I haven't seen the photo but I do hope they were flinging their stones in the air like students do with their (lent-by-photograher) mortar-boards when graduating from University. 🥌🥌🥌

😂😂😂

Beachhuts90 · 21/02/2022 08:41

Oh, to be the person at the BBC who opens this batshit email Grin

MaryMcCarthy · 21/02/2022 10:47

Why's everything about sexism?

Various men's teams have done the same celebration.

The fact you haven't seen them doesn't mean they don't exist. Try to pay more attention then you wouldn't be 'irked' by people enjoying themselves.

incognitoforthisone · 21/02/2022 11:02

I'd be jumping for fucking joy if I'd just won an Olympic Gold medal.

Do you also think it's patronising and sexist when men's football teams jump up and down for the photocall when they're celebrating a trophy win?

Absolutely stunned that you a) think this is an issue and b) EMAILED THE BBC ABOUT IT. Good grief.

KarmaStar · 21/02/2022 15:10

Can we see the email?😀

Dahlietta · 21/02/2022 15:27

I'm actually not a fan of these staged celebration photos, but it's not just a girl thing. And the biting medals is definitely worse.

WildHorsesRunInMe · 21/02/2022 15:28

Surely you are joking?

vonniee · 21/02/2022 16:02

I used to work in the BBC complaints dept, you’ll give them a laugh if nothing else.

But yes, you were definitely being unreasonable.

MaryMcCarthy · 22/02/2022 12:19

You complained to the BBC about sportspeople celebrating in a way that you didn't like? Wow.

If these are the sort of complaints the BBC are receiving then I think their future is more secure than we realised.
