To think oven chips always take far longer to cook than it says on the pack

Why is this? Or AIBU and everyone else has them underdone?

OP posts:
Marmite27 · 20/02/2022 15:31

Roasties too.

Peas252 · 20/02/2022 15:31

Nope, they normally take less time than it says on the pack

Hugasauras · 20/02/2022 15:31

Yes. Always.

givethatbabyaname · 20/02/2022 15:31

Maybe your oven doesn’t reach the temp the dial says it does?

Hugasauras · 20/02/2022 15:32

An underdone chip is horrifying.

Mommabear20 · 20/02/2022 15:32

Every. F**king. Time!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 20/02/2022 15:32

I would agree normally but have just bought an air fryer and it's a revolution! Quicker and nicer!

negomi90 · 20/02/2022 15:32

It takes the packet time to be technically cooked ie slightly warm and not raw. But a lot lot longer to get them cooked properly (ie crispy).

Bananawings · 20/02/2022 15:33

Agree about air fryer! Game changer!

bluebunnyblue · 20/02/2022 15:34

Get an oven thermometer - our dial is way off and we have to turn it higher to get the right temperature inside the oven. I find that if oven is not hot enough the oven chips take waaay longer to cook and never go properly golden.

liveforsummer · 20/02/2022 15:35

Yes but I find that with all over food although i like things on the crispy side, nothing worse than a floppy chip, soggy batter or that slimy not quite cooked bit in the middle of a pizza. And this is over many ovens not just my own

NotQuiteNormalMe · 20/02/2022 15:35

Agree, packet time is for those that like to eat limp, starchy, anemic potatoes.

Cornettoninja · 20/02/2022 15:36

Our fan oven is over-enthusiastic so I have to knock off about ten degrees and ten minutes of the recommended cooking time for everything otherwise it gets incinerated.

Ovens vary, it’s worth using the recommended cooking times/temps as a guide and going slightly higher/longer if needed.

Pedalpushers · 20/02/2022 15:36

Yeah you have to do them for at least the upper end of the time range, else they aren't crispy enough. But I do like borderline burnt chips Grin

Changethetoner · 20/02/2022 15:37

I think it's because we overcrowd the tray, putting too many chips on together.

ISpyCobraKai · 20/02/2022 15:39

Yep, they need 10 minutes more.

WutheringHeights66 · 20/02/2022 15:39

It’s the oven that makes the difference. My
Newish range with a high top temperature is far superior to DDS inherited 15 year old electric one that takes half an hour to preheat.

liveforsummer · 20/02/2022 15:43

It's not just about a higher temperature surely though as that will just burn on the outside but stil have the anaemic floppy chip in the centre unless you cremate them

Sparticuscaticus · 20/02/2022 15:44

Yes
Chips always take at least 10 mins longer than on the packet

InvincibleInvisibility · 20/02/2022 15:45

I agree. Chips need more time. Baguettes need twice as mich time as indicated. Pain au chocolat needs LESS time... Hmm

Yes. Usually double the time!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2022 15:46

@Hugasauras

An underdone chip is horrifying.
Absolutely!
whiteworldgettingwhiter · 20/02/2022 15:46

Yes! And so do sausage rolls!

HelloDulling · 20/02/2022 15:47

Yes. A good ten mins more.
