To think oven chips always take far longer to cook than it says on the pack

Why is this? Or AIBU and everyone else has them underdone?

Air Fryer sounds good but do you use them much for anything else?

I reckon it's the chips rather than my oven as most other things cook in about the correct time.

Every time!

I always keep them in for an extra 10 minutes.

APurpleSquirrel · 20/02/2022 15:50

This mesh trays have been a game changer for us - chips cook evenly & crispy:

Turn the oven up a bit

purplesequins · 20/02/2022 15:51

yes in our current oven.
it's shit.
it takes 20 min to reach temperatur.
unless I add the grill, then it takes 10 seconds from frozen to charcoal...

Poetrypatty · 20/02/2022 15:54

That looks good APurpleSquirrel Do you put that on top of a baking tray? Or I'd spill them all Grin

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/02/2022 15:55

Yes, far far longer

CandyLeBonBon · 20/02/2022 16:00

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

I would agree normally but have just bought an air fryer and it's a revolution! Quicker and nicer!
I came on to say the same - they cook in half the time and they're delicious!

I use mine for everything!
Clumsyvolcano · 20/02/2022 16:02

You need a ninja foodi, everything cooks faster than the packs 😁

FurryGrowler · 20/02/2022 16:02

Nothing worse than an underdone chip.

Absolutely agree that they take longer than it says on the packet, regardless of the manufacturer or the type of chip it is.

Pisses me off no end.

No it just goes on the oven rack like that. Although it looks quite floppy, it's not. You might need 2 depending how many you need to feed. I got mine in Home Bargains but for a few £s it's worth a go?
Oblomov22 · 20/02/2022 16:03

I agree. Some of them say 20 minutes. My arse. More like 40.

LowlandLucky · 20/02/2022 16:05

My Son kept going on about how good the air fryer was for chips, they were bloody ghastly. I always leave them in the oven for an extra 10 minutes.

xumaix · 20/02/2022 16:06

I microwave them for a few minutes from frozen, then into the hot oven. Takes half the time and perfect results to our liking.

We've used ours quite a bit but that might still be the novelty! Mainly bought it for DS1 16 as he quite often likes to cook for himself at different times than us as he does a lot 9f sports stuff.

Couldn't agree more. They ALWAYS need more time than stated on the pack...
EveryAvenue · 20/02/2022 16:07

I like them in the air fryer because they get nice and golden, very fast! Have to be careful not to overfill it though because they go soggy Angry

Air fryer for anything over the oven any day! So much faster!

Bromse · 20/02/2022 16:07

Maybe a bit longer but there is definitely a knack to it. Preheat the oven AND the oven dish, line with baking paper, make sure the chips are thinly spread. If you have them piled on top of each other they don't cook well.

Talking about this has made me fancy some chips.

itsgettingweird · 20/02/2022 16:07

They do!

But I always thought it's because I switch oven on and Chuck them in straight away - therefore it's not at the cook for X minutes temperature for a while.

PickAChew · 20/02/2022 16:08

I do them with the fan plus top and bottom heat rather than just the fan and rear element. They still take the full time plus time allowed for tossing, mind. Nothing really browns well with the standard fan setting on my oven apart from joints of meat, whole birds etc.

Currently roasting a chicken but the potatoes have to wait until it's done or I do them in the actifry.

CecilyP · 20/02/2022 16:08

I’ve found the opposite. If I leave them in as long as suggested they come out burnt.

WhatdoImean · 20/02/2022 16:08

Biggest common problem from my parents? Never pre-heating the oven. Put the chips in, tun on the oven... and disgusting results :-)

All ovens vary, but in general 22 mins at 220 makes for perfect oven chips... though you need an extra 5 mins if you crowd them too much!

Drool... off to get some tonight I think!

Jonny1265 · 20/02/2022 16:10

Yep. The ones I use take a good 10 mins longer.

TheChosenTwo · 20/02/2022 16:17

I just buy French fries as it’s only ds that we keep chips in for and it’s probably because we cook so few at a time that they seem to take the time it says on the packet!
I will add that we all eat chips but when we do we use the proper chip fryer Grin we do ds chips when we’re having something we know he won’t eat like a very spicy curry or stew and dumplings!
