To think oven chips always take far longer to cook than it says on the pack

Why is this? Or AIBU and everyone else has them underdone?

OP posts:
PinkSyCo · 20/02/2022 16:32

Yep they take twice as long as they’re supposed to. And they don’t cook evenly either.

BoredZelda · 20/02/2022 16:32

Nope, they normally take less time than it says on the pack

Agreed. It has taken me years of burnt offerings to finally convince my husband they don’t need 20 minutes.

BoredZelda · 20/02/2022 16:36

Biggest common problem from my parents? Never pre-heating the oven. Put the chips in, tun on the oven.

This might explain why people here are saying 40 minutes.

Are people not pre-heating the oven?

Pinkbendyman · 20/02/2022 16:36

Yes! No longer a problem since we got an air fryer though.

recklessgran · 20/02/2022 16:38

Get yourself a Scoville oven tray and deduct 5 minutes OP. Absolutely amazing I've got the roasting tins and the trays. Complete game changer for me - everything cooks quicker and they stay non stick forever. Can't believe it took me 40 years to discover them. [Cheapest I've found them is in Dunelm.]

NinjaQueen · 20/02/2022 16:41

Every time!!

I think, and I am probably wrong, that the instructions relate to cooking 100g of chips. So if you cook more it takes longer.

Also having other stuff in the oven at the same time makes them take longer too.

Iwishiwereamillionaire · 20/02/2022 16:54

Yes definitely, I bought a very expensive range master oven but cook chips in my airfryer as it’s quicker, cheaper to run and they taste better. My oven now just looks pretty in the corner Grin

Elsielouise13 · 20/02/2022 16:57

Nope. Aga cremates everything left in for packet specified time. And since can’t smell it burning you are only ever left with charcoal if you forget.

Hshuznw · 20/02/2022 16:58

Nope, not for us.

We preheat and then spread out on a baking tray. Cooks perfectly.

LaWench · 20/02/2022 17:00

Always need longer in the oven, agreed OP. We have a deep fat fryer now so always perfect chips.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 20/02/2022 17:01

I make chips by slicing potato and chucking it in the actifry. They are perfect.

Nidan2Sandan · 20/02/2022 17:01

Yes & I find a quick spray of frylight type oil is ideal for a good crispy chip.

elephantoverthehill · 20/02/2022 17:07

Dd and I discovered microwave chips, game changer Wink

DoNotTouchTheWater · 20/02/2022 17:09

I’ve got a thermometer in my oven. Still takes twice as long to cook any oven chips as it says on the packet.

OMGItsEarly · 20/02/2022 17:18

@Poetrypatty

Air Fryer sounds good but do you use them much for anything else?

I reckon it's the chips rather than my oven as most other things cook in about the correct time.

We have just acquired one.

DH currently has piri piri chicken in it.
It does amazing crispy jacket potatoes in 30 mins from raw
Hash browns, sausages and bacon are amazing.
I’ve had the crispiest oven sweet potato fries out of it.
Oven chips come out amazing.
Frozen steak bakes in half the oven time.

I am going to try doing a cake in it next.

Tabbacous · 20/02/2022 17:20

Depends on the tray for me, using a solid based baking tray they take bloody ages, but using one with holes in the bottom so they can cook from all angles is much better. The best way though is in an airfryer, I got one on Facebook marketplace for £3 and its amazing; don't use the oven much now, mainly that and the hobs.

PolkaSpace · 20/02/2022 17:20

The time is for a preheated oven. So if oven takes ages to heat up that might be why. Also use oven tray with low sides not high sides

drpet49 · 20/02/2022 17:21

No, 20 minutes in my oven and they are cooked.

PolkaSpace · 20/02/2022 17:21

@OMGItsEarly would the cake not go crispy? I am so intrigued

So am I but they sell air fryer accessory packs with cake tins so they must work. I also watched a YouTuber vid of someone doing muffins in theirs, they looked good.

PolkaSpace · 20/02/2022 17:32

@OMGItsEarly that's amazing. Hope they turn out yum.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/02/2022 17:39

It's because of the acrylamide. They're not allowed to tell people to have chips fully cooked because properly cooked nicely browned chips contain more acrylamide, which causes cancer.

So they give instructions that don't cook the chips enough and we can all pretend to follow them.

Similar with appliances, if your dishwasher or tumble drier dried properly on a standard setting, the eco rating would be horrendous. So they don't dry properly on the standard setting, but you can change the settings to add an extra dry function.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 20/02/2022 17:42

I found this with my old oven but have just got a new fan oven and they're cooked perfectly in the time recommend on the instructions. Nothing more disappointing than a pale soggy chip.

Triotriotrio · 20/02/2022 17:45

Omg... I literally came on here to ask if I'm the only one that thinks that oven chips are shit nowadays and take forever to semi cook?! 🤣

I've tried all different one from different shops and they all are just shit. New oven and old oven, and in DPs oven.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/02/2022 17:58

no - but I rarely read the packet
chuck them in for 22-25 minutes (and try to remember to do a bit less if I've bought thin ones by mistake or because they were on special offer
