Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

God no! Trapped on a a boat that I can’t get off!!! Sends my claustrophobia into panic attack mode!

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 19/02/2022 17:42

Can you put me off please?

You might bump into Jane McDonald.

JoBrodie · 19/02/2022 17:42

I like being on boats / ships in general so yes I'd be a bit jealous too, sorry OP! I've done one cruise and enjoyed it very much but didn't pay much attention to the countries we were in as I don't really enjoy dashing about. The second one was a crossing (A to B, with no stops in between) and I watched lots of films and stared at the ocean, perfect :)

If you're 'pining for the fjords' could you bring a bit more ferry-type stuff into your free time. E.g. if visiting a city with a river go on one of their boats, or take an overnight ferry to or from Ireland, or Europe etc. Lots more info on The Man in Seat 61's page who has advice on travelling around the world via train or boat.

butterpuffed · 19/02/2022 17:43

I've never been on a cruise so I feel it's slightly unfair of me to comment negatively on them

It's not stopping everyone else so I'm finding the thread a good laugh !!

Whitney168 · 19/02/2022 17:43

I was briefly envious when my friend booked the Queen Mary back from NY for her 50th, but actually I think that might even be the worst of them from her photos. Not even the benefit of new places to see.

VioletCharlotte · 19/02/2022 17:43

No, not at all. I went on a two night cruise once, that was more than enough for me. It's just quite boring really. I hated having to get dressed up for dinner and make small talk with people we were sharing a table with. I hate the thought of being trapped in the middle of an ocean with all those people.

BritWifeInUSA · 19/02/2022 17:43

I enjoy cruises. We are going on one in 2 weeks’ time. But there are cruises and there are cruises. I couldn’t do a “Butlins at Sea” type cruise such as Royal Caribbean or P and O. Seabourn, Regent and even Oceania are my type. Much more elegant and relaxing.

LillianGish · 19/02/2022 17:44

I think cruises were aspirational back in the 1960s before the advent of package holidays when they had an air of exclusivity and foreign travel was only for the rich. The blocks of flats which pass for cruise liners nowadays are like the worst type of all-inclusive holiday where you are literally trapped on board with groups of people you'd probably go out of your way to avoid in normal life. There are so many better ways to travel and better places to stay than in a massive tourist ghetto - and that's even before you factor in an outbreak of norovirus or worse. I'd honestly rather stay at home.

Crepusculum · 19/02/2022 17:44

I might feel a twinge of jealousy if it was a two bedroom suite on a regent seven seas cruise somewhere interesting…otherwise no, especially not for that length of time!

Needdoughnuts · 19/02/2022 17:45

Haha! These comments are hilarious! I don't recognise any of this - '3rd rate entertainment' 'mediocre food' 'small rooms' 'same boring people' 'just a shopping mall and a casino'. But if this is what you think you've either never been on one or had a very bad experience!

burnoutbabe · 19/02/2022 17:45

I have never actually been stuck with anyone else on a cruise (bar when we went with my parents obviously). But we don't share tables with others and are happy not to mix much.

Our day in day Copenhagen -we went to tivoli gardens and wandered through town and thought yes we'd like to come beck here, less so in Helsinki -it's a taster of a place. Plenty of Alaskan towns we did own thing and booked a local whale watching tour or bears etc.

We go with Azamara. I could never do P&O again!
Davros · 19/02/2022 17:45

@Windbeneathmybingowings

No absolutely not.

Looking out at the infinite blackness of sea merging in to sky at night.
Prescribed fun.
Got to be back on board at x time or they sail without you, who needs pressure like that on holiday.
The tips.
Everyone dressed up all the time, so exhausting.
Sea sickness.
Same shit every day.
Pirates.
Whirlpools.
And finally The Kraken.

People definitely underestimate The Kraken
awaynboilyurheid · 19/02/2022 17:46

Oh I would be so so jealous too! Love cruising it’s the only time in my entire life I just get up everything is done for me from first thing until last thing at night, and new places to explore every day!
Just try to think it will be your turn too at some point and try not to get too jealous

I’m guessing most of the haters haven’t been on one or ion a decent one I remember someone on here saying she would hate a cruise as she didn’t like a ferry!
Really not bothered if people hate it anyway leave the cruise to people who enjoy it!

radioactive4 · 19/02/2022 17:46

Yuck. Cruises are cringe and tacky.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/02/2022 17:47

Depends. To either the Arctic or Antarctic? Or a small boat with local crew down the Nike? Round the Galapagos? Bring it on!

Floating version of a resort hotel a la Costa Del Brit? No ta. Don’t go to a non-moving hotel like that so fuck going to one you can’t leave (like the idea of breakfast on a balcony looking at the sea though).

AcrossthePond55 · 19/02/2022 17:48

Not 'jealous', but maybe a bit 'yearn-y'.

I've never been on a cruise but I've sort of wanted to try one. But then I look at the prices for cruises 'the way I'd want to do it' and I realize just 'how much holiday' I could get for that same amount of money! Yikes!!

Plus I have Coeliac and I don't want to be stuck in the middle of the ocean with only plain chicken and green salad with ice cream for dessert for every meal. Despite boasting of 'we cater to dietary needs' I've heard nightmare stories from people with various food allergies.

Staryflight445 · 19/02/2022 17:48

I’m too anxious to enjoy one, I’d be worried about getting back to the ship on time and would constantly be clock watching and not submerging myself into where I am.

AlternativePerspective · 19/02/2022 17:50

Out of curiosity, how many if those saying never have actually been on one? totally irrelevant. You don’t have to try something to know that you wouldn’t want to do it.

I haven’t tried anal or a sub-dom relationship, that doesn’t mean I don’t have the ability to know that I wouldn’t do it if someone paid me.

TBH, after the horror that was cruises during the beginning of the pandemic, where people were literally confined to their cabins for 2 weeks or more, I’m surprised the industry survived and that anyone would want to go on one.

MayBMaybenot · 19/02/2022 17:50

My idea of hell on Earth. Crammed onto a floating infection incubator with thousands of other people. Not for me.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 19/02/2022 17:51

I’m loving all the snobby comments from people who have never cruised.

Classica · 19/02/2022 17:51

I haven’t tried anal or a sub-dom relationship, that doesn’t mean I don’t have the ability to know that I wouldn’t do it if someone paid me.

Those are two of the activities offered by Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Nc123 · 19/02/2022 17:51

Bugs going round. MIL and a friend went on a cruise a few years ago and MIL went down with the cruise’s resident horrible stomach bug. Who wants to spend their holiday throwing up?

Plus, you’re stuck with the same people in the same environment, no freedom to change plans or explore.

Seeingadistance · 19/02/2022 17:52

You couldn't pay me to go on a cruise.

hiraffe · 19/02/2022 17:53

I would like to experience one to tick of the list but the cons for me are;

seasick
bad weather
falling/wanting to jump overboard
bumping into people you'd rather avoid
post covid: virus spreading/getting locked down on one.
not truly being able to actually see countries, how can you in a few hours.
getting scared I would miss the cruise departure from said stops.
