Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Nope

mizzo · 22/02/2022 20:56

Like living in a bed sit or small flat isn’t a choice FFS
I know it's not a choice for many, is that what you meant? There's no need for the FFS. I wasn't being negative about flats and bedsits. Its just not where I live now. I have lived in similar and didn't like hotels then either.
Camping is a great choice as an alternative to what you normally do. Not so great as a holiday if you struggle for space, or live off hob food or live in the back of beyond.
I agree.

Holidays are a compromise between affordability and what ever you consider a break. Lots of people think good weather, places of interest, not having to cook clean or look after the kids is a break.
Again I agree, everyone has different opinions about what's important on holiday.
If I'm away for more than a long weekend I want to have the same facilities and private space as I have at home. That's generally not found in hotels or on cruise ships.
I'd rather not have a cleaning service for example if it meant I could have a private pool, for others the cleaner is not negotiable and they'd be happy to share a pool.

Holidaying on a floating Butlins? Dear God, absolutely not.

Travelling on an ocean liner a la The Queen Mary, then absolutely, yes.

lightisnotwhite · 22/02/2022 21:56

@mizzo Yes I’d agree that somewhere better than home is a good holiday.
Equally unless you want to share with mates a single parent with kids isn’t going to afford ( or won’t want the upkeep) of a Villa.

I’d also say that being on the sea is pretty special. Maybe a floating Butlins like P&O takes the edge off but unless you are phobic there’s something very life affirming about being afloat.

Mysterian · 22/02/2022 22:15

@I8toys

Absolutely not. I do not want to spend my holiday trapped with the type of people who go on cruises. Like my in laws. To get corralled around cities in huge packs not really taking in of the culture. They are a feckin menace.
Then when somebody asks if you want to get coralled around cities in a huge packs you say 'no thank you' and do your own thing. It's optional.
Angrymum22 · 22/02/2022 22:15

Can’t think of anything worse than being stuck with a bunch of strangers in a floating box.
However I quite fancy travelling to a destination on one of the proper passenger liners. We saw the new QE on her trials voyage in Barbados 17 yrs ago. It dwarfed the floating hotels docked alongside side it. I wouldn’t mind a transatlantic trip but not a hop on hop off cruise.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/02/2022 22:46

@Puzzledandpissedoff

A cruise liner is nothing like a ferry though!

Don't ever say that to Hurtigruten!! Wink
Though TBF they don't pretend to be a traditional cruise line; it's just that some go on them thinking they are and get disappointed

I always had the impression they were working ships and in days of yore were something of a lifeline to the west coast of Norway. I've spent time in Bergen and Tromso: always loved watching their arrivals and departures.

I've always quite fancied a round trip cruise, as some of the stop-off points are quite breathtakingly beautiful. The Norwegian Sea can be pretty brutal, though. I don't get sick particularly, but I find the motion very discombobulating and one particular incident gave me nightmares about rogue waves for weeks!

Tamworth123 · 22/02/2022 23:01

This! There is some really creepy stuff about cruises out there. Also because you’re often in international waters the uk police can’t investigate.

My grandmother & late grandfather went on quite a few cruises; on one a woman was murdered by her ex husband (he presumably thought the sea would solve the problem of a body, but it washed up in Italy during the cruise, the ship spent several days in a port in Italy and he was arrested. On another, he man attempted tk murder his gf who'd turned down a proposal in front of some other guests.

There are also apparently a lot of drink related accidents and deaths on cruise ships, in comparison to land holidays.

Flowersandhearts · 22/02/2022 23:02

@Totalwasteofpaper

😂😂😂 Floating norovirus toilets.

I would struggle to he jealous of that.

My thoughts exactly- look up Norovirus outbreaks on cruises to put you off OP.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/02/2022 23:03

They were, yes, and I'm pretty sure they still are - except they now sell cabins to "cruisers" which no doubt helps to fund their operation

It's not my cup of tea, but for a really up-close experience with small Norwegian communities I can see why it would appeal (though I don't think they spend long in the ports)

Flowersandhearts · 22/02/2022 23:04

Honestly someone would have to pay me to go on one.

CounsellorTroi · 23/02/2022 00:24

This is how I feel. I’ve always loved sea travel in any form. Not just cruises but island hopping in the Hebrides including from Skye to St Kilda, and boat trips at the seaside. There’s just something primal about it. And I don’t feel trapped, quite the opposite. I feel free.

toconclude · 23/02/2022 08:59

@CounsellorTroi

All these people saying they wouldn’t go on a cruise even if it was free or they were paid to - are you really that closed minded? What would you have to lose? I don’t fancy a skiing holiday but would consider giving it a go if it was free.
Ofgs It has nothing to do with being closed minded, just knowing my own mind Once again for the hard of hearing at the back: different people like different things!
Cotswoldmama · 23/02/2022 09:01

No I watched a documentary about how they dump all their rubbish in the ocean.

DepthOfTheAbyss · 23/02/2022 09:07

Not at all! I have a friend who goes on cruises a lot and I’m never jealous except when they went through the Norwegian fjords. Even then I would prefer not to go on a cruise ship from uk for it though I wouldn’t say no.

Crayfishforyou · 23/02/2022 09:11

Norovirus
Not being able to escape other people
Limited fresh food
Stale recycled air
Crowds of the same people day after day
Tiny bathroom
Nightlife that puts Phoenix Nights to shame
Being charged twice as much for momentous and tat when you dock somewhere for the day.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 23/02/2022 09:20

It's funny reading these, I worked on cruise ships for a few years in my 20's. There were no deaths or murders that I heard of unless they were hushed up.
Sea sickness was a thing occasionally if the weather was rough but never any sickness outbreaks like norovirus and I was on for months at a time.

I take the points about the entertainment though Grin not really my cup of tea.
Would like to go back one day as a passenger

mumto2teenagers · 23/02/2022 09:24

I love travelling and exploring new countries, but a cruise would be my idea of hell.

I do get that people like different things. I don’t get the mocking and sneering at people on here for liking different things.

This thread is not much different to those about holidaying in Dubai! Full of totally misguided stereotypes spurted by people who've never even done and tried it but think they know better than those who have!

There is equally feedback from people who went and hated it.
TatianaBis · 23/02/2022 09:48

Which happens on Dubai threads too.

I’ve been to Dubai and it was ghastly.

kylie122 · 23/02/2022 09:52

I absolutely love cruises they are so good

See i dont like holidays where you are sat on a beach. Nor do i particularly like holidays which are tourist traps and ram packed full of tourists.

The one thing you can guarantee with a cruise ship is your timetable is not your own, your ability to be spontaneous is limited and when you do make landfall its always going to be busy due to everyone else on your boat doing the same.

You aren't going to get incidents where you get lost driving and stumble across something random but brilliant. You are less likely to interact with locals because you are much more likely to do that with fellow passengers.

You cannot just change your plans easily if the weather is shocking one day.

And i like staying in random quirky places.

It just doesn't tick any box for me. And i dont need to go on one just to prove this.

RedToothBrush · 23/02/2022 10:20

The reverse is true.

Why would someone who loves beach holidays book a self catering trip to a random bit of Finland if they hate cold weather and cooking for themselves?

They don't know what its like til they've tried it.

I can bet they would still hate it though.
