Do you get jealous of people who go on cruises

Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

people using the buffets…were being reminded by crew to wash their hands before using it. Remember cruisers, "Washy Washy - Happy Happy!"

To the PP who said you couldn’t look over the rails because the sides of the ship were boarded in, was this to stop people throwing themselves into the Atlantic because they’d been told “Remember Cruisers: washy washy, happy happy!”?

Helpthishouseworkhater · 19/02/2022 19:51

I bloody love a cruise! Sorry OP, not helpful.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/02/2022 19:53

Christinatherabbit that makes me want to go on one! Weirdly I always really enjoy any boat trips we go on on holidays, so it might be for me in the future

The floating care homes thing is incredible Nickwinkle - presumably only in the sense they get all their meals made for them? No nursing care I assume!

Cameleongirl · 19/02/2022 19:55

I have a genuine fear of being trapped on a cruise ship when there's a norovirus outbreak or something even worse, I could see myself literally diving off the side and trying to swim to land. Grin Being on a ship with loads of other people just isn't for everyone and I don't even enjoy organized holidays, I much prefer to make my own timetable.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/02/2022 19:57

Fuck me. Any place that uses a PA to make announcements to its holidaying clientele is a massive NO from me, let alone an environment that uses language like ‘Remember Cruisers: HmmAngrywashy washy happy happy’ AngryAngry.

How do people stand it?!

Darbs76 · 19/02/2022 19:58

I never wanted to cruise but we agreed to go with my mum after my dad died. I loved it. Sorry!! But I wouldn’t go until they stop testing as they test everyone once a week and then you can be sent to land for 10 days to isolate. So not risking paying for a cruise only for that to happen. We went with TUI in 2019 and it was only £900 all inclusive. Cruise of the med, so no more than a land holiday. Wasn’t all posh or full of retired folk either - highly recommend it, once they’ve stopped testing

HeyItsPickleRick · 19/02/2022 19:59

I've been on the royal Caribbean Oasis, Royal Caribbean Allure and Seaborn Sojourn. All in 'good' cabins (on the latter Henry Kissinger was next door). All were nice but IMO you get a much better holiday just staying on land. You have no time to explore anywhere, you're often ushered into tourist traps. Restaurants are nice but you don't get the same buzz and culture as local ones. They're also terrible for the environment and don't support local economies in the same way. I was very young when I went on them and accompanying an elderly single relative. I wouldn't go again but I can see how it appeals if you're very elderly or don't have the energy for proper travel for another reason.

Darbs76 · 19/02/2022 19:59

All these comments from people who haven’t been sound like me before I went. Now I cannot wait to cruise more. Didn’t catch a thing and I’ve been sick on many land holidays. Also you can get off you know those saying you’re stuck! These are big ships

ithinkimdone · 19/02/2022 20:00

Everyone being super negative needs to remember that cruises are excellent holidays for disabled people in particular.

ithinkimdone · 19/02/2022 20:02

I've been on 8. Never got ill. Before I went on a cruise I would have posted all the sorts of negative comments on here. But then I went on one and loved it Grin

PinkButtercups · 19/02/2022 20:02

Absolutely not.

Would never book a cruise. Be stuck on a boat with hundreds of people that I probably won't like. No thanks.

That has nothing to do with someone expressing their opinion. People are allowed to not like a holiday.
AlwaysLatte · 19/02/2022 20:05

Absolutely nothing. We could but we don't. Fancy being stuck on a boat with people you can't get away from. Also, boats aren't meant to be sky high with slopping swimming pools (shudder)

notagainnotagain · 19/02/2022 20:05

Those ships look lovely until you imagine being stuck with thousands of other people on them.

pollyglot · 19/02/2022 20:07

I had enough of sea travel back in the 70s, when I travelled to the UK and back by Chandris lines. 4 weeks each way. Sure, it was interesting seeing Borabora in the early dawn, tiny coconut tree-covered atolls in the middle of nowhere, the Panama Canal, Cuba, back in the Bad Old Days, looking sinister, NY harbour, again in the freezing early dawn. But 2 weeks of nothing but sea? The Pacific is SO unbelievably vast. Lots of people who travelled back and forth every year, to escape the British winter, treating it as a permanent cruise. Awful entertainment, sickness, boredom. And MrGlot, ex Royal Navy, refuses to cruise, because the ships don't have big pointy things that go bang on the front. Our idea of a wonderful holiday is to buy a budget airline ticket in to one European country, and another back home from the other side of Europe, then spend 2-3 weeks making our way, with just a backpack to the point of departure. No bookings, no real plans...just as the mood takes us. Wonderful and exciting and spontaneous. No, no cruises, thanks. Though the overnight ferry to St Malo, Caen, and the ferries along the Dalmatian coast, to Palermo from Italy, and to Malta are fun.

Tigersonvaseline · 19/02/2022 20:07

No.not at all I can't think of a worse holiday.

Think of the fridge s being kept free for all the folk's who will die!
The one that ren out of fuel but lost it's anchor! They had to defecate in bag's and leave them outside the door And be fed plain White bread for days.no.

Classica · 19/02/2022 20:07

Having some poor sap singing ' "Washy Washy - Happy Happy!" at me before meals would be intolerable. I'd rather the bald facts: wash your hands to avoid an extreme case of the shits spreading throughout the ship.

Kennykenkencat · 19/02/2022 20:08

@PugInTheHouse

Sorry OP, can't help you. They are amazing, never been ill on one and dine about 150 nights in total. Kids facilities and entertainment is brilliant. There have been several famous singers, comedians, West End stars on the ones we have been on, also the pros from Strictly. Rarely crap entertainment.

They are anything but overcrowded, especially at the moment. We are going on 3 this year (basically cancellations from the last 2 years).

We never go on the cheap Thompson style cruises though. I have never fancied those at all.

That is exactly the sort of entertainment that makes me cringe. It reminded me of Hi-de-Hi.

Do people still get seasick, they have big stabilisers on the new ships today

I was told that.

It is not true.

What ever went down came up again.
Lost about 7lbs on a 5 day cruise.

Only plus side.

sadpapercourtesan · 19/02/2022 20:08

I actually have a horror of cruise ships. They're like prison ships, only with scallops and corny entertainment.

I can't understand why anybody wants to pay all that money to be trapped in a floating island with a load of upper middle class wankers, all swapping germs at the buffet and disco dancing. Ugh.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/02/2022 20:08

I think they suit certain people but as I know two hideous , nasty , I’m all right jack elderly sisters who go on them about 5 times a year , totally puts me off .

What nonsense! Of course there is internet.
Tigersonvaseline · 19/02/2022 20:09

Yes I can imagine for some people they are a good option

WhatIsThisPlease · 19/02/2022 20:09

My absolute complete and utter idea of hell.

Would rather spend two weeks in my lounge than go on a cruise.
