To not pay £480 to fix dd's friend's phone

Dd (14 yo) was with her friends and accidentally hit a friend in the arm. He had his phone in his hand and dropped it. Apparently it will cost £480 to repair!!! His parents want us to pay this. I think this is ridiculous. First, friend dropped the phoen, it wasn't like dd was using it. Second. If you're going to give your kid a stupidly expensive phoen, you should insure it and have a bullet proof cover.

I'd double check with the parents what exactly they think happened though.

If the lad thought he was going to be in trouble for breaking a new phone, had taken the case off etc (DD did that once & ended up with a broken phone) then the version of events he gave them, might be very different to your DDs version

Sounds like the phone was bought in Thailand in baht. This is definitely a con. Thai phones would be cheaper than in UK. Get this boy to put his claim all in writing, with the repair estimate attached. He could be a bully trying a con. Send a copy to his parents, they should be horrified. Your daughter could also stick a copy on the school notice board so every one knows what he is up to. This must be stressful for you and your DD. Pay nothing.

Genuine apple phones would probably be cheaper in the UK than Thailand assuming (as I do) that custom duties were not paid here and the vat was claimed back in the UK. Imported 'luxury' goods have massive duties imposed here.

@FarangGirl
If what you said is true, who the heck would buy a phone in Thailand and bring it back to the UK? My bro in China said that electronics were very cheap there but were not the same quality as export versions. My experience in the far east is that genuine imports could have very large duty, but recycled and knock-off products were usually available. In the far east, most ordinary people earned much less than westerners. I repeat that a Thai-purchased phone (was it really an iphone?) was a daft purchase to have made. Dropping a phone should not really result in so expensive a repair. It is also a known stunt that scammers throw themselves at cars so as to drop a dud laptop they were carrying and then, after some amateur dramatics, claim for a new laptop on the basis that the driver caused an accident. It all sounds very dodgy to me. PAY NOTHING!
