Unvaccinated

I am not vaccinated but my husband is. He has been offered a promotion in another country which would mean moving out of the country. He is vaccinated. AIBU to feel apprehensive about getting the vaccination? I want to support his dreams but I am worried about getting the vaccination due to the horror stories I have heard. AIBU?

I find the horror videos and pictures of people dying on ventilators all alone far more horrifying than any vaccination "stories"

Forgetting the vaccination, do you want to move another country?
Of course I do, I’ve just read so many stories about people who have died that were fully vaccinated. I will admit that I have not done any extensive research. My husband got the vaccination for work and travel purposes but even he didn’t want to get it at first. I’m not worried about the sore arm or short term after effects. I am more concerned about possible long term effects. I don’t really want to move as my parents who are elderly are here and I would hate to leave and then something terrible happens to them in my absence sad

You aren’t very decisive are you?

HollaHolla · 18/02/2022 12:52

There's a difference between hearing odd 'horror stories' from your neighbour's, auntie's, postman's brother's mate - and actual scientific research. I work with medics, nurses, and allied health professionals. Every single one of them has said 'just get vaccinated'. I tend to believe them, given they are seeing the impact from those who have not been vaccinated. The people who die are generally those who are unvaccinated. Of course some vaccinated people have died, but the numbers are far smaller.

Do you know/hear of anyone who died of smallpox in the last 30 years? No, you don't. You know why? Vaccination....

Mammma91 · 18/02/2022 12:53

OP, i was very apprehensive about the vaccine. Now double vaxxed and awaiting my booster. I had absolutely no complications. A bit of a sore arm for a day and that was all. It later became mandatory at my work to be vaccinated, and I haven’t looked back since. 😊

In the end, no one can force it upon you but it does sound like yourself and your husband have a fantastic opportunity ahead and I wish you both the very best of luck 🤞

Orchidflower1 · 18/02/2022 12:54

You have two choices vaccinate and go or don’t and stay here.

PhoboPhobia · 18/02/2022 12:55

You're not being clear - you've said that of course you want to go abroad but then you say you don't want to leave your parents.

If you don't want to go, ne hnest with your DH but don't make him think it is just about the vaccine. If truly is about the vaccine you need to do much more research and talk to a professional who will give you the facts not some internet hearsay,

Emilyinpanic · 18/02/2022 12:55

How are people still going on about FB horror stories when so many billions have been vaxxed?

VickyEadieofThigh · 18/02/2022 12:59

@Emilyinpanic

How are people still going on about FB horror stories when so many billions have been vaxxed?
Indeed.

Just read this very morning of the US family of 3 who all were found dead of Covid. All had underlying conditions. Not sure if they were vaxxed.

Billions have been safely vaccinated.

Parpophone · 18/02/2022 13:09

Forgetting the vaccination, do you want to move another country?
Of course I do

I don’t really want to move as my parents who are elderly are here and I would hate to leave and then something terrible happens to them in my absence

Of course you want to move or you don't really want to move?

@CatLover71 Which is it?

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/02/2022 13:11

She's a catlover - following her role models in indecision! But seriously, get the vaccine!

DePfeffoff · 18/02/2022 13:12

Have you heard any horror stories that are remotely comparable with 6 million deaths?

Staryflight445 · 18/02/2022 13:19

Horror stories?
What about the horror story of the number of worldwide deaths there’s been from covid?

Last time I checked the stats I think there were 2 deaths from getting vaccinated out of hundreds of thousands of doses.

SartresSoul · 18/02/2022 13:26

The most common vaccine side effect is pretty horrific actually- a sore arm so totally understand why you wouldn’t want that.

looklikeanelephant · 18/02/2022 13:28

I felt worse when I had covid both times than any of the vaccines tbh op and the last time I had covid was a month ago now and I'm still struggling for breath, tired after a long walk and having regular headaches too.

CorrBlimeyGG · 18/02/2022 13:31

Can you link to these horror stories please catlover? If we can explain why they untrue or deliberately misleading, would that help you?

Brefugee · 18/02/2022 13:37

Easy choice, OP. Either he goes alone or you get a vax and go with him. Your choice.

PAFMO · 18/02/2022 13:42

I second this. 9 people in the UK have been confirmed as dying as a direct result of the vaccine. That's against a fuckton more who had a sore arm or died of Covid.
ApolloandDaphne · 18/02/2022 13:42

I haven't heard any vaccine horror stories. Everyone I know has had it and no-one had more than a sore arm or a bit of tiredness. Go get your vaccine then decide of you want to move. The two needn't be linked.

NowEvenBetter · 18/02/2022 13:45

What on earth are you talking about? You think the vaccine kills people? 😂😂😂😂

TheVanguardSix · 18/02/2022 13:45

OP, I am unvaccinated. But I do have a legitimate medical reason which is incredibly unusual and yes, it is, I repeat, legit. My brother had a similar risk but was also immunosuppressed. He did die two days after the vaccination. The horror stories are unusual and although my brother's outcome is really and truly a tragic 'horror story', let me tell you, those situations are totally niche.

I'd get the vaccination in a heartbeat in your shoes. And as time goes on, I do consider the possibility myself. I've had covid and really, it was shitty and icky, but I was fine. I'd rather have the vaccination than not, if I am honest. The risk to the average person, even those with underlying health issues, is so minuscule. Think about all the people you know who've had it and are fine. I'm sort of convincing myself here. Grin

I wonder if the vaccination is giving your anxiety about moving abroad something to hide behind. I dislike change. I get very stressed even going on holiday. I don't like leaving home- weird, I know, but that's how I'm wired as I get older (moved around loads when I was a younger woman). Maybe think about the move abroad and explore online the region you'd be moving to... the pros (don't think about the cons right now). My feeling is, this is more about the understandable anxiety that comes with change and less about the vaccine itself. Flowers

NowEvenBetter · 18/02/2022 13:46

Also, why are you exposing your elderly parent to you, unvaccinated?

Chestofdraws · 18/02/2022 13:51

Are you maybe using the vaccination becayse you don’t want to go and don’t want to tell him that? So trying to find an excuse?

Clytemnestra4 · 18/02/2022 14:19

The only ‘horror story’ I can see here is unnecessary distrust of experts and severe scientific illiteracy.

CatLover71 · 18/02/2022 14:21

I’m not using the fact that I don’t want to be vaccinated as an excuse as to why I am apprehensive about moving abroad. I am primarily concerned about my elderly parents. My fears about the vaccine are secondary. Thank you for all the replies. I will do some research before making my final decision.

OP posts:
Cognoscenti · 18/02/2022 14:27

Honestly, I didn't feel like I needed the vaccine. I've had covid, and had symptoms worse than a cold but not as bad as flu - still awful to deal with for 2 weeks though, and the fatigue was horrible. I've had both vaccines anyway, I figured it would be beneficial if it reduced/suppressed symptoms should I catch covid again, and hopefully protect me if a new, more severe strain emerges.
The first jab didn't affect me more than a sore arm for a couple of days. The second one was the same, although I felt rough the following day. I would genuinely rather that than have covid again, when I felt much rougher than that for 2 weeks.
