To think New York cheesecake is bland and claggy?

I probably am. I tried it many years ago and didn't like it but that was a long time ago so I gave it another go today. An M&S one so probably a good example of what one should taste like I thought. I ate it but was thoroughly unimpressed. It was so bland. Yes I know it's vanilla but I love vanilla and don't find vanilla ice cream bland and it's actually my favourite. So why do I find this cheesecake so uninspiring?

My favourite bought cheesecake is usually a chocolate one as long as it's not too sickly. My all time favourite though is my homemade Oreo cheesecake which is odd as I don't like Oreos Confused It has 5 ingredients and doesn't need baking.

Please tell me your favourite cheesecake(s).

My blackcurrant cheesecake is heaven.
Made with home grown organic blackcurrants too.

We were in New York a few years ago and went to a diner renowned for its "legendary" cheescake.

Worst I've ever had in my life.

geminiflanagan · 18/02/2022 17:28

I hate baked cheesecake. All claggy and cloying. Love a fridge cheesecake though, those are the best!

Etymology23 · 18/02/2022 17:34

Some very proud white chocolate cheesecake production here, with a raspberry coulis.

Lemon and ginger
Yum yum yum

Or white choc and raspberry

ISpyCobraKai · 18/02/2022 19:10

New York cheesecake is the only type worth eating.
It must be served at room temperature though, otherwise it is cold and claggy.

It’s the baking - baked cheesecakes are horrible.

JaceLancs · 18/02/2022 21:59

I prefer a lighter cheesecake and unbaked ones so make my own

Dimondsareforever · 18/02/2022 22:11

You need to go to jail op. NY cheesecake is the best … (with lots of cream!)

EndersGame · 18/02/2022 22:14

Yorkshire curd cheesecake is the only way forward.

throughtheair · 18/02/2022 22:56

Also what was nice about the cheesecake in nyc was the base - it was more like sponge than crushed biscuits

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 19/02/2022 01:22

Hi ZZ. Are you getting them at Shaw's?

We get them at Hannaford AKA Stop & Shop. They do really good bread too. At this time of night I often send one of my teens there to get something mouthwatering.

PrincessNutella · 19/02/2022 03:10

I live in the land of NY cheesecakes and they can be very good if one is in the mood, but it is a very heavy dessert. I don't like unbaked cheesecakes at all. My preference would be a fruit tart.

I much prefer a baked cheesecake. I find the set types are often a bit too gelatinous which is off putting.
Cherriesarethebest · 19/02/2022 06:42

A cheesecake is best baked imo, but with a sharp fruit topping like raspberries or blackcurrants.

Eminybob · 19/02/2022 06:56

I made a passion fruit cheesecake years ago for a dinner party and it was divine, truly the best I’ve ever eaten, but it was a massive faff so I’ve never done it again.
Although now I’m thinking about it I might have to dig out and dust off that cookery book…

HarlanPepper · 19/02/2022 07:10

Dismissing all baked cheesecake because you've never bought a good one from a supermarket...I don't know where to even start with that. Who'd have thought that something full of cheap ingredients and preservatives wouldn't taste very nice?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/02/2022 07:26

Order one from the English cheesecake company. They arrive on dry ice, delicious cheesecake and fun to play! Grin

Takeitonthechin · 19/02/2022 08:10

If you like chocolate cheesecake, try the M& S triple chocolate cheesecake... I find this delicious

User639710 · 19/02/2022 08:19

All flavours of English Cheesecake company ones are good from Waitrose. The cherry ones from the Chatsworth Farm Shop are also good.

JudgeJ · 20/02/2022 13:31

I think that there are so many versions of 'cheesecake' that it's hard to compare them, just buy what suits you.

TrashyPanda · 20/02/2022 13:53

A proper baked cheesecake is the food of the gods. With a pastry base, not biscuit. You can only eat a small bit cos it is so rich.

When I was a child, our local Polish deli got a delivery of cheesecakes baked in Manchester every Friday. My dad just about wept - one bite took him back home.

I did get a recipe from a lady in the Polish community. It started “take 36 eggs”! Dad used to talk about the enormous cheesecakes he remembered from his childhood, but I thought he was exaggerating. ..

British cheesecakes are nice, but totally different. Lighter, less luxurious.

I know I'm late with this but I sent this M& S New York vanilla cheesecake back yesterday & got a refund. Cut half of it up between 3 of us & we all said the same. As the first post said it was totally tasteless & I love Vanilla too. £5.75 returned to me no problem. Thought I'd see if anyone else had found same problem & seems there was.
