To think New York cheesecake is bland and claggy?

I probably am. I tried it many years ago and didn't like it but that was a long time ago so I gave it another go today. An M&S one so probably a good example of what one should taste like I thought. I ate it but was thoroughly unimpressed. It was so bland. Yes I know it's vanilla but I love vanilla and don't find vanilla ice cream bland and it's actually my favourite. So why do I find this cheesecake so uninspiring?

My favourite bought cheesecake is usually a chocolate one as long as it's not too sickly. My all time favourite though is my homemade Oreo cheesecake which is odd as I don't like Oreos Confused It has 5 ingredients and doesn't need baking.

Please tell me your favourite cheesecake(s).

@Tereseta

My mum makes a mean lime and ginger cheesecake, everytime I visit she makes one Grin
That sounds divine.
Flapjak · 18/02/2022 10:54

White chocolate and ginger. Its a waggamamma recipe steal. Also waitrose are doing a baked catalan style one which is a bit lemony but delish. The m and s tastes really bland

Cattenberg · 18/02/2022 10:59

I really like my mum’s unbaked cheesecake. She puts lemon juice and plenty of grated lemon zest in the filling, and the base is made from ginger biscuits.

BackwardsPrawn · 18/02/2022 11:02

@JimmyDurham

M&S desserts tend to be bland IMO.
They are really bland, I think. All of them taste like claggy sugar, to me.

A good, baked cheesecake is a thing of wonder and delight - but I don't think I ever found one in a UK supermarket. Which is both sad for my palatte and a relief for my waist!

LargeInCharge · 18/02/2022 11:04

Yanbu I tried some in NYC and didn’t like it either.

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 11:27

New York cheesecake is my fave. I like really plain, no sauce, no extras, no chocolate, just really plain.

creativevoid · 18/02/2022 11:29

I am from New York. New York cheesecake is delicious. Unfortunately there is nothing sold in stores here that is anything like actual New York cheesecake. Depressing.

TuscanApothecary · 18/02/2022 11:29

Homemade unbaked lemon and lime cheese cake with strawberries on top.

@greenlynx

Waitrose does very good New York cheesecake, way better then M&S. it’s my favourite.
@greenlynx

Which Waitrose version do you buy please?

Stripyhoglets1 · 18/02/2022 14:12

Yabu - a good one is food of the Gods

BurntO · 18/02/2022 14:13

Homemade is best and so easy

I agree store bought cheesecakes are claggy and meh

greenlynx · 18/02/2022 14:30

@KatherineJaneway
Waitrose New York cheesecake which is £ 4.45 .
I only buy it when on sale otherwise it ruins my budget and weight!

tillytoodles1 · 18/02/2022 14:35

Nigella does a gorgeous one. Its white chocolate with fresh lemon juice, you can't taste the lemon though, it just seems to make the chocolate less sickly. Topped with crushed pistachios, it's my favourite.

bluechameleon · 18/02/2022 14:38

Nigella's London cheesecake is lovely. It has a layer of sour cream on top.

SiobhanSharpe · 18/02/2022 14:39

Nigella is the Cheesecake Queen.
She has many, many recipes in her books and online, including a superb one for New York cheesecake with a sour cream topping. .

Some can be a tad complicated - but not exactly difficult. However the results are definitely worth it and home made ones are bigger as well as better! (Always a good thing, shop bought ones can be teeny on the small side)
If you make your own you can adjust things like the amount of sugar if you find shop-bought ones too sweet, and also try different bases like crushed ginger nuts, or posher ginger biscuits with pieces of ginger, plain chocolate digestives, hobnobs, whatever you like.
The easiest of all, because it's not baked on a biscuit base, is the burned basque one referred to above.

Baked cheesecake is just cooked disappointment.

Mary Berry's one with white chocolate and mascarpone is delicious.

I used to work somewhere that had cheesecake Wednesdays - pudding was always cheesecake on a Weds and there was always 3 different ones. Usually one fruit - lime, orange, raspberry etc; then a chocolate bar one like Twix or Mars bar; then the manky New York one. Haven't worked there for 15 years, still think of it often 😕

SiobhanSharpe · 18/02/2022 14:42

Oops, I thought the sour cream layer went on the New York cheesecake. I think I've made it that way as well as the London one. Blush
But they're both lovely.

GrendelsGrandma · 18/02/2022 14:47

Most shop cheesecake is processed shit.

I used to buy cheesecake from a Jewish bakery in London, it was amazing. Dense and delicious. Most stuff you buy is just flob on a biscuit.

MissConductUS · 18/02/2022 14:57

@Pugdogmom

New York cheesecake is my favourite, but the ones they serve here are awful. It's like buying a frozen pizza from Asda here and trying to compare it to what you'd get in Italy. If you ever go to NYC, go to Junior's or Eileen's for Cheesecake. Lindy's used to be good too, sadly closed!
As a New Yorker, I agree with this. I don't indulge often, but when I do I get one from Junior's. I like the fruit toppings.
ZZTopGuitarSolo · 18/02/2022 14:58

I love it. My local supermarket bakery here in New England makes it and it's delicious. Sliced strawberries on top added just before eating is perfect.

Hi ZZ. Are you getting them at Shaw's?
JustDanceAddict · 18/02/2022 15:04

Bought is nowhere near as good as homemade!

Tractordiggerdump · 18/02/2022 15:05

Went to NY Times Square to a restaurant specifically for cheese cake and was so disappointed. So sweet and yucky.

HeadNorth · 18/02/2022 15:11

NY baked cheesecake is too bland for me - at least the ones I've had. Burnt Basque cheesecake veers too close a creme caramel for me - vom. I prefer an unbaked cheesebaked, irregardless of fashion and fads, either zesty with a ginger biscuit base or the madly delicious dime bar cheesecake my daughter sometimes makes - now that is worth the calories.
