To think New York cheesecake is bland and claggy?

I probably am. I tried it many years ago and didn't like it but that was a long time ago so I gave it another go today. An M&S one so probably a good example of what one should taste like I thought. I ate it but was thoroughly unimpressed. It was so bland. Yes I know it's vanilla but I love vanilla and don't find vanilla ice cream bland and it's actually my favourite. So why do I find this cheesecake so uninspiring?

My favourite bought cheesecake is usually a chocolate one as long as it's not too sickly. My all time favourite though is my homemade Oreo cheesecake which is odd as I don't like Oreos Confused It has 5 ingredients and doesn't need baking.

Please tell me your favourite cheesecake(s).

Ynbu

And now all I can think about is cheesecake and the shops are closed!

Whatwouldnanado · 17/02/2022 23:37

Can be improved with swirls of lemon curd on top and curls of good dark chocolate. Did this once as an emergency pud and it went down well.

Pugdogmom · 17/02/2022 23:41

Cheesecake factory in US is OK, but to get an authentic one, you should get one from a proper NY deli or restaurant, like the ones I mentioned.

peachgreen · 18/02/2022 00:04

All cheesecake is grim.

throughtheair · 18/02/2022 00:11

DH and I both agree that the NY cheesecake we had in Juniors in NYC is the nicest thing we've ever eaten. Supermarket versions over here don't come remotely close

SayCheeseBoris · 18/02/2022 00:15

I made the Mumsnet white chocolate cheesecake before xmas and have to say it was nicer than any shop bought one I've ever tasted. Have tried it with other flavours but none are as good as the simple white chocolate one.

steff13 · 18/02/2022 00:18

I make a pumpkin one with cinnamon whipped cream and a gingerbread crust. It's very good. But the "Welcome to Junior's" recipe is good for a plain cheesecake. I don't think that cheesecake bought from a grocery store is going to be as nice as when you've made from scratch.

JimmyDurham · 18/02/2022 03:13

M&S desserts tend to be bland IMO.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/02/2022 03:23

Yabu, like pp's have suggested, you've never had a good one then. Baked NY cheesecake has a depth of flavour and a tartness to it too.

I like coldset cheesecake too, but not as much

stuntbubbles · 18/02/2022 03:26

YABU to call an unbaked cheese mixture cheesecake.

Cheesecake = baked.

I have tried a few of the supermarket ones.

Tesco Finest was ok and so was the MandS one. Morrisons The Best one I wasn't so taken with.
I want to try the Waitrose one as that's got generally good reviews but there isn't one that near me.

There's also quite a few online bakeries/ places that do cheesecakes as I was looking at them recently.

steff13 · 18/02/2022 03:55

Costco's cheesecake is pretty good.

Arabellla · 18/02/2022 03:59

YANBU, I love cake in nearly all its forms but I fins NY cheesecake blamd and just too much.

The best cheesecake I ever had was a blueberry one in a restaurant in West London, much better than cheesecake factory et al.

Waitrose one isn’t much getter I’m afraid.

The best cheesecake is marscapone cheesecake of any flavour.

Sparkleandshine1 · 18/02/2022 05:18

They sell The American Cheesecake Factory ones in the frozen aisle at Costco. They are huge though!

Polyanthus2 · 18/02/2022 05:43

I used to make one using lime jelly (ok not very authentic but quite yummy) - don't have the recipe nor sadly.

Polyanthus2 · 18/02/2022 05:44

I enjoyed a slice from Tesco's chiller - raspberries in it.

QuentininQuarantino · 18/02/2022 06:44

Absolutely burnt basque cheesecake, ideally bought from La Vina in San Sebastián, a bar which churns them out and is always the final stop on anyone’s pintxos tour!

Nigella I think has a good recipe for it.

I liked the cheesecake in NY (famous bakery with queue outside but I’ve totally forgotten the name!!! but it was very sweet. I have a sweet tooth though!

AlternativelyWired · 18/02/2022 09:32

If I make one it has to be without eggs and all the baked ones I've seen have eggs.

Japanese cheesecake poster-it sounded amazing when I read your thread but I can't stand anything eggy.

It doesn’t help you OP as 4(!) eggs, but I found Santiago Rivera’s (La Viña chef) recipe and put it through the translator.

It was the New York Times’ “flavor of the year” winner in 2021 so even the New Yorkers prefer basque cheesecake ShockGrin

Nigella's recipe for BB cheesecake is really good - quick, easy and quite light. And only three eggs needed for 600 grams of cream cheese.
(I don't do the licorice sauce though, as I'm not a licorice lover.)

SiobhanSharpe · 18/02/2022 10:47

I can remember buying cheesecake in various Jewish/Eastern European delis in London in the early 1970s -- and they were all the baked variety as I think that was the traditional way to make them.
They could be a bit on the claggy side, but weren't too sweet.
The unbaked/fridge-set ones came along a bit later and were popular because they were easy to make, I think. But they could be
sickly-sweet.

Onautopilot · 18/02/2022 10:47

Mandarin with a crushed gingernut base, and a splash of Cointreau for an adult version ( home-made).

Xmasbaby11 · 18/02/2022 10:50

I've had it in NYC and also the Waitrose one - enjoyed them both! It's a simple dessert so needs to be good. I do prefer it with raspberries.
