To think New York cheesecake is bland and claggy?

I probably am. I tried it many years ago and didn't like it but that was a long time ago so I gave it another go today. An M&S one so probably a good example of what one should taste like I thought. I ate it but was thoroughly unimpressed. It was so bland. Yes I know it's vanilla but I love vanilla and don't find vanilla ice cream bland and it's actually my favourite. So why do I find this cheesecake so uninspiring?

My favourite bought cheesecake is usually a chocolate one as long as it's not too sickly. My all time favourite though is my homemade Oreo cheesecake which is odd as I don't like Oreos Confused It has 5 ingredients and doesn't need baking.

Please tell me your favourite cheesecake(s).

I love NY cheesecake but agree that supermarket versions are invariably disappointing. There needs to be a tang of sour cream in it. A proper Jewish bakery is where you'd find a good one.

Burnt Basque cheesecake is where it’s at.
This is the trendy new kid in all the bakery windows. I assumed it was a trad Spanish recipe but apparently it was first made in 1990!

I made a Japanese jiggly cheesecake the other day. It was delicious, light and airy, sweet but very eggy.

I like all cheesecake. Even the blander ones. Love a fruity one. Deep down I yearn for the tangy, creamy primary school dinner one I remember from the 80s, which I suspect came out of a packet Grin

UserLibra78 · 17/02/2022 22:48

I will second Waitrose NY cheesecake as well. Simply delicious as it is not sickly sweet

Nigella's baked Choc Lime cheesecake... or same filling on ginger biscuit base with dark chocolate grated on top 😋

Here you go. I don't put cream swirls or Oreos on the top. That would be too much in my opinion.

Key lime cheesecake you say? I make a great key lime pie so I might try it as a cheesecake.

I've made a biscoff version of the Oreo one and a Bourbon biscuit one. The Oreo is best.

I agree, I like the idea of them, but dull.

Unbaked, masses of lemon, digestive base. Food of the gods.

New York cheesecake is my favourite, but the ones they serve here are awful. It's like buying a frozen pizza from Asda here and trying to compare it to what you'd get in Italy. If you ever go to NYC, go to Junior's or Eileen's for Cheesecake. Lindy's used to be good too, sadly closed!
OMG Lindy's! YY amazing cheesecake. The best one though was in a pub in NY that did amazing food I had Mac and Cheese followed by Cheesecake both in the very traditional NY way and both were completely different from anything I've had in UK. I have never had an NY cheesecake outside of NY that tasted anything at all like the ones I had there. Especially the shop bought ones in UK which are such a disappointment and not even nice.
Kanaloa · 17/02/2022 22:58

I like New York cheesecake. I do hate chocolate cheesecake or any of the currently popular chocolate deserts though. I think the overwhelming taste of them is usually ‘sweet.’

Maybe try one from a bakery? Or just stick to chocolate cheesecake if you already like that!

AlternativelyWired · 17/02/2022 22:59

Frozen pizza is dreadful. I make my own. Sadly I'm not likely to get to New York any time soon.

It's like saying any one food is claggy and tasteless. Depends on who made it or where it came from, no?

Norugratsatall · 17/02/2022 23:01

YABU. You need to try the Waitrose one, far superior to M&S's (IMHO).

Honeyroar · 17/02/2022 23:04

You need to go to The Cheesecake Factory in the USA. It has so many flavour of cheesecake- you’d find something you liked. I agree that the plain ones are a little too bland, especially shop bought U.K. ones!

StiggyZardust · 17/02/2022 23:04

New York cheesecake is one of my favourite things. I love the claggyness!

tara66 · 17/02/2022 23:15

Go to American Cheesecake Factory is you ever get a chance - there's one in Dubai but not in UK.

So glad it's not just me; I loathe all baked cheesecakes and much prefer the creamy, light, traditional UK ones
Much as I love the US they're ruined cheesecake for me now that so many UK ones are llike theirs

tara66 · 17/02/2022 23:20

@greenlynx

Waitrose does very good New York cheesecake, way better then M&S. it’s my favourite.
Agree with this - the M&S one not good, but the Waitrose one is lovely.

Burnt Basque cheesecake is where it’s at.
Yes! Gorgeous. And not claggy at all. Served with a tangy fruit compote if some kind. Morello cherries, for example.
SiobhanSharpe · 17/02/2022 23:27

And so easy to make.

RocketPanda · 17/02/2022 23:30

Baileys cheesecake. Hands down my favourite especially with some Baileys cream on the side.

CasparBloomberg · 17/02/2022 23:31

YABVU I love a baked or New York cheesecake and can’t stand the fake, sloppy, uncooked things we get served here instead. They don’t taste at all nice, are way too sweet and have a slimy texture.

Baked every time … now must go and try the M&S one, thanks for the tip OP. missing point of thread

Perfectlystill · 17/02/2022 23:31

YANBU. I don't get cheesecake at all.
