We’re moving house and I’m 8 months pregnant so he’s been doing the majority of the work; but he’s gone and hoovered something up he shouldn’t have as when he turned the hoover on this morning a really strong chemical smell came out that start burning my nose and throat. I did ask him what he’s hoovered and he said nothing unusual! But now my chest hurts (could be me overthinking it though) and he’s opened the windows in the house.. and he was sheepishly washing the filter in hot soapy water 5 minutes after I asked him what the smells was and that it was burning my nose/throat.. he still denies hoovering anything that could have created the smell, but he was scrubbing the bathroom yesterday with all sorts of cleaners despite me telling him not to mix them and to use them sparingly as the whole house spelt of bleach at one point I thought it was going to spontaneously combust at one point Grin
I’m very grateful for him doing all the heavy/dirty work however.

AIBU to not want him to make headlines for accidentally killing off the whole family with a mixture of chemicals?Grin

Ps. I am never moving house again.

Mind you, I wouldn't trust a lot of women either, but I have never lived with a woman, so said men because of that.

IamJob · 16/02/2022 14:34

@Penvelopey

I think once babies here I’ll do the majority of the cleaning grin that grin better mean that's a joke. Unless he is doing all the hands on care of the baby
Not a chance! I remember the OPs other thread - her DP won’t spend any of his money on his existing child or buying what new baby needs. His extra income goes on himself and his hobbies. Op has to fund everything and spend any extra money she has on activities for their child. He won’t even buy a packet of vests for his own baby. He’s a waste of space.
FedUpOfLighteningCrotch · 16/02/2022 14:43

@Penvelopey Actually I think swapping would be a welcome change! I’m usually the one dealing with the kids while he deals with the bigger share of housework. I quite fancy getting stuck into some deep cleaning recently.. must be nesting kicking in!

If the men in your house are all so useless they can’t be trusted to basic tasks you mig he want to re think having them in the house.

It’s not “lucky” to have a man able to to basic tasks. None of these men seem to struggle at work.

@IamJob this is a work in progress. We have sat down and spoken and have decided to contribute equally for babies things until we get the joint account up and running and everything moved over; then we’re going to have a ‘kids pot’ that we put X amount into every month so when they need new clothes or even just a day out it comes from that, the same with an emergency fund pot; then we have an equal allowance for hobbies (I’ve decided mine will be treating myself to actually having my nails done rather than saying I will every month and then not!)

So we shall see how that works out; in theory it can’t go wrong and I’m optimistic 🙈

You definitely shouldn't mix black mould spray and bleach. It should say so on the bottle. He needs to be more careful.

Ah I remember that thread. Glad it's sorted OP.

The trouble with breathing in chlorine gas is that it reacts with the moist air in your lungs and creates hydrochloric acid. Which is something you want to avoid really.

VelvetChairGirl · 16/02/2022 15:25

Ah it could just be the hoover then. My chemical/cleaner idea came from the fact we have paint tiles in the bathroom that started to chip and peel so he’s spent the last few days scrubbing off the paint ready to re-paint for the next people; so he would have been wiping it all down with bleach ect

why the fuck would you be trying to clean paint off tiles with bleach? god I hate bleach its horrible stuff and very harmful to the environment, I cant stand people using it everywhere like its soap.

only bleach in my home is in the toilet duck.

blameless · 16/02/2022 15:25

There are lots of 'lifehacks' on the internet that advocate cocktails of different cleaning products.
The most recent fatality I could find is here (www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/woman-34-dies-after-inhaling-22505866) - it is important to take care and so close to the birth, not worth taking any risks.

Is he/ you mad?

Do you really think the new owners/ tenants will want your flaking bathroom tiles?

If this is a private home and you are selling, I assume they will rip it out and replace the bathroom.

If it's rented then I still don't see why he is prepping for new people.
Totally weird.

FedUpOfLighteningCrotch · 16/02/2022 16:12

@JinglingHellsBells I did say this; we were meant to tear the bathroom out but never got round to it; it’s a very old bathroom that no one buying the house will want to keep.. but DP is adamant he wants to leave everything fresh and nice for them; which includes re-painting the tiles, he wants to buy a new thermostat for them as the one we’ve got doesn’t work, we put new taps in not so long ago. I think he’s mental as they’re buying it to rent it out anyway so they’ve obviously going to just rip everything out, replace then put it on the market as a rent 🙈

OP posts:
Penvelopey · 16/02/2022 16:18

Agree no one wants your painted tiles. They'll rip them out. You're wasting money.

Penvelopey · 16/02/2022 16:18

Which better be his money not the stuff earmarked for your kids

Zilla1 · 16/02/2022 16:27

Don't think Cl2 is the most dangerous product of household chemicals that can be accidentally made but can't decide what would be. Would need to look at relative toxicity of chlorine, chloramine, peracetic acid and phosgene if he got creative with a vacuum cleaner motor/belt?

BertieBotts · 16/02/2022 16:31

Mould cleaner usually has ammonia in, so shouldn't be mixed with bleach.

Scianel · 16/02/2022 16:34

@VelvetChairGirl same, we literally only use bleach to rinse out the cassette toilet from our campervan at the end of a trip, not on everyday surfaces. There's no need at all.

What does this mean?

Does anyone understand "No mentions of method"?

Mollysocks · 17/02/2022 07:08

Maybe Method the cleaning brand? But that would be weird as I mentioned Flash and Viakal and my post wasn’t hidden!

How odd!
Penvelopey · 17/02/2022 08:56

Ecover might do something less chemically. I know that other brand that seems to be against talk guidelines does.

TatianaBis · 17/02/2022 08:57

Maybe they meant method as in how to mix x + y to make chlorine gas.

That's probably a better shout!
