What things are you guilty of nicking from hotels?

I'm definitely guilty of stealing things from hotel rooms. I never go for anything overly big, usually teabags, toilet roll and the toiletries when I leave.
What are you guilty of nicking from hotels or your workplace?

@flowervest75

If I was so hard up I couldn't afford nice towels (and I have been that broke) I wouldn't use what little cash I had to stay in a hotel and steal them - I'd stay at home and save up for nice towels.

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

All you thieving cunts are being subsidised by people like me who don’t steal the towels etc

Insider knowledge coming up....
Those mini toiletries are just topped up from a giant bottle of the stuff in some hotels and as for stealing curtains I hate to think what might be on them....not

I took this from a hotel I stayed at recently. It had a metal seal on the lid that I had to pierce before using it. (I did use it whilst at the hotel) I'm pretty sure that can't be refilled or resealed...? Confused

I've never contemplated stealing a pillow or towel or curtains!!

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

You take toilet rolls from hotels?

You should be ashamed of yourself.

If there's less than half on the roll we chuck them in the bin if it's any consolation. Also any toiletries that have been opened so you you may as well. I quite like when people empty the tea/ coffee/ sugar/ milk as it saves me taking everything out before I clean the tea tray same goes for toiletries.
OneTC · 14/02/2022 08:49

I haven't ever stolen anything from a hotel, or anywhere, because I'm not a thief.

People that steal are untrustworthy

Laiste · 14/02/2022 08:51

Ahem - just the tie backs, not the actual curtains ...

:)

Clawdy · 14/02/2022 08:52

Staying at a hotel in Switzerland, and I dropped the little pen accidentally on the floor. When we got back later in the day, it had been replaced, so when I found the other pen, I kept it, it was such a neat little thing!

I've worked at multiple hotels never have I been asked to fill up those little bottles. We bin them if used. Top up those big bottles that you find fixed in showers.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/02/2022 08:56

Hotel worker here -

Mini toiletries are included in your room rate - take them if you like
Loo rolls - well, technically they are provided to be used up by you, but it's a bloody weird thing to take
Slippers - if they come in a sealed plastic wrap and have that weird cardboard sole and Terry towelling cover, they are classed as disposable and can be taken
Pens - take

Taking towels, dressing gowns, remote controls, lamps, bins, pillowcases, pillows, hair dryers - all theft.

QuizzlyBear · 14/02/2022 08:57

Never anything more valuable than toiletries or pens.

Except! I went on a work trip to Newcastle once and my boss was an absolute creep all evening at the hotel. I ended up getting pissed, escaping to my room and (I still have no clue why) stealing the bedroom bin. It was a mini one and I'd shoved it into my duffel bag.

Forgot all about it until I got home and felt the shame kick in...

thecatsthecats · 14/02/2022 08:57

Tiny toothpastes. They seemed to be a thing in Thailand, so we stashed both every day.

Each one lasts us a long weekend, handy to always have one in the car.

Tyneside · 14/02/2022 08:57

Hotelier here. I'll bite.

Toiletries, biscuits and drinks are provided for your use so yes, you can take them. No we don't refill tiny bottles. We provide new.

Taking anything else from the room is theft, and not light hearted or amusing when you are the person paying for it. Margins on rooms are small, hotels are expensive to run. Electricity and heating costs have doubled. Food costs are soaring etc. It's a tough industry right now. The level of theft is upsetting.

Towels and robes are not owned by the hotel, they are provided by a linen service. We have to pay for any shortfall in returns.

Hair dryers regularly used to go missing so we now keep them at reception which is inconvenient for everyone. A shame that we have to but we couldn't fund a new hairdryer every few changeovers.

Artwork is screwed to the walls, antique ornaments are in locked glass cabinets. Again, what a shame we have to do this.

We used to have special branded mugs. We only have a handful left as they were stolen as souvenirs. It's really not ok to steal.Sad

RachelGreeneGreep · 14/02/2022 09:04

Nothing.

I prefer my own toiletries. I usually use the tea and coffee while staying.

Laiste · 14/02/2022 09:05

@Tyneside - ''Hair dryers regularly used to go missing so we now keep them at reception which is inconvenient for everyone. A shame that we have to but we couldn't fund a new hairdryer every few changeovers.''

I've stayed in a hotel which had it's hairdryer chained to the wall. Not dungeon style chain or anything Grin it was a small hairdryer with a lightweight chain from it to the wall where it was plugged in.

I suppose even doing that isn't a guarantee though.

ohdrearydrearyme · 14/02/2022 09:07

I worked at reception in a very large and fancy hotel in China quite a long time back. Every floor had a person in charge of that floor. They had a position in the corridor, so easy to see comings and goings. As soon as a guest was leaving to go check out, they went into the room and checked for missing towels, handtowels, bathrobes etc., then phoned it down immediately to reception. The cost would be added to the bill as they checked out (with the option of pulling it out of their luggage and returning it instead). Used to happen several times a week.

SoManyQuestionsHere · 14/02/2022 09:11

Back in a previous life, I used to work at a really nice hotel. People nicking stuff was pretty par for the course. One particular guest took the biscuit, though:

He stole a chair. Or at least he tried to. Disassembled the whole thing and stuffed it into one of his suitcases.

He probably would have got away with it, too, had he not been such a cheapskate: I mean, it's not as though it's an obvious suspicion.

As it happened, though, Mr Longfinger decided to complain about minibar charges upon checking out. Which resulted in someone going to check his room and reporting the chair missing. Which in turn resulted in very obviously flustered guest upon being asked, at which point we asked to check his bags. Chair was neatly stashed on top of his clothing.

Needless to say, Mr. Longfinger earned himself a VIP spot on the black list.

watchtheglitterdustswirl · 14/02/2022 09:14

I once took a towel from a hotel because I'd sprained my ankle and I used it to wrap ice and apply for the car home. I washed and posted it back and got a phone call from the manager thanking me for being honest and offering us a 50% discount on our next day which was just lovely!

It pays to be honest. And we did go back.

SatinHeart · 14/02/2022 09:20

Not much tbh. I'll take any unopened mini toiletries (and not use any of them myself) as my workplace collects them for the local women's refuge.

Dragongirl10 · 14/02/2022 09:21

DP and I always take a couple of big towels just because we can😂 they’re always super long and so comfy. I love them lol

This is beyond ignorant and theft ^

I hate people like you, as l run a luxury accomodation small business, do you not realise that every item you steal has to be paid for and puts prices up for everyone else.

I have to calculate, every hour of electric, every bar of soap, l provide expensive high gsm towels and expect that people enjoy them and leave them there, luckily l have a great calibre of guests and very, very rarely have l had towels stolen.
On the odd occasion it has happened l blacklist them and will not allow a repeat booking, if they try they will be told why.
Shame on you for thinking this is so funny.

Frillypetticoat · 14/02/2022 09:22

Some years ago we stayed at the Palazzo Versace in Australia as it always looked so fantastic on I’m a Celeb when they came out of the jungle. They had very gorgeous black towels with a strong warning that if you took them you would be charged more than £100 each! I panicked when housekeeping took our used towels but didn’t replace them but fortunately they believed me when l told them. Also the chambermaid came from 3 miles away from where we live in Essex

MrsCatE · 14/02/2022 09:32

Years ago I worked away from home and was put up in very nice hotels and never nicked so much as my used soap. MrCat and I started (uhmm m) 'courting' and he started staying over with me. It was only when we started living together I discovered everything from hotel ashtrays (we don't smoke), wooden hangers, teaspoons and tons of toiletries - he had nicked everything that wasn't nailed down; I was mortified.
However, he wasn't the worst. I was such a regular that the staff confided in me that a previous guest had stolen the CD player plus speakers.

KimchiWithMe · 14/02/2022 09:32

I stay in a lot of hotels for work and there are some favourites because their toiletries are cute and look good in a big glass jar in my bathroom (l'occataine, Crabtree and Evelyn and Aveda)

A friend of DH prides himself on his after dinner drinks tray (made up of tea, coffee and sugar collected from hotels) it's quite impressive and if you knew him you would find it funny. Then his wife will bring out proper coffee.

HolidayLetter · 14/02/2022 09:34

I have never "nicked" anything from a hotel. However, I do become very, very fed up with guests who take the loo rolls (WTF steal loo rolls? I've had to start limiting the number I leave out), dishwasher tablets (ditto), soap powder (ditto), large bottles of L'occitane soap/shower gel/shampoo (have now switched to generic 'hotel' type things in small quantities). I was particularly fed up with the guests who took every single Twinings herbal tea sachet - there was a whole basket of them in about 10 different flavours, the idea being that guests use however many they like, then I restock. I did ask these guests if they really drank 50 cups of the stuff, and they said they didn't, but as they had paid to stay there, they felt justified. Confused. I have no words for people who steal the towels and pillows, both of which have happened. Every single stolen item costs me personally to replace.

It's very off-pissing, as they receive a welcome hamper including wine, cake, etc, etc.

So, no, I don't steal and I don't care for people who do.

tkwal · 14/02/2022 09:36

I'm surprised that anyone makes a joke out of stealing towels from hotels "because they can" . Do you also shoplift ? Because if the supermarket was understaffed or using self service checkout they might not notice? If you like the hotel towels that much some actually sell them. If the consumables are already in your room then you've already paid for them. Towels etc are a major expense because they tend to be higher quality than domestic ones
