Suitcase locked with everything inside

Not really an AIBU but am in dire straits (relatively speaking) and hoping someone can help...

Have come away for a few nights with toddler. DH lovingly shut and locked out suitcase ready to go, before realising that he didn't actually know the code.

We had to run and catch the train so left with a locked suitcase, thinking that we'd be able to figure out the code later.

999 tries on the combination lock later and no joy, so now we're stuck in a hotel room with no clothes and, worse, no books or cuddly toys to help toddler sleep.

It's a Delsey suitcase with a 3-digit combination lock and a button with a space for a key.

Please please can anyone help?

it's 007

I'd probably get some tools or ask the hotel maintenance team to break it open and buy a new suitcase...

This. Good luck.

HollowTalk · 13/02/2022 19:06

Can you remember whether you ever changed it? Mine was set at 0000.

User1isnotavailable · 13/02/2022 19:11

'DH lovingly shut'

Confused
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 13/02/2022 19:12

@Suitcasefuckup

If I go through the zipper will I break the suitcase for good?
Yes.

But it's bugger all use to you locked or broken at the mo.

YellowbellyLass · 13/02/2022 19:16

Wondering if it was left on the correct one originally and you messed it up by trying different ones Grin

whiteroseredrose · 13/02/2022 19:17

Just start at 001 then 002 and go through each number.

It doesn't take that long

FluffyBooBoo · 13/02/2022 19:17

I couldn't believe that it was only 999 possible combinations either

How many combinations would you expect to get from 3 digits? It's quite literally the highest number that can be made in 3 digits.

GingerScallop · 13/02/2022 19:18

I always speed spin my thumb on the numbers while pulling zip and invariably, it opens. it can take 10 to 15 minutes non stop spinning or at most 20 but it's always opened.

Disclaimer: always been my suitcase. Am ultra forgetful

LetticeLeaf · 13/02/2022 19:21

Saw a video online once that apparently was what the staff in airlines do to open suitcases that are locked. Which is to get a pen and push it into the zip and it opens it up. It worked in the video but never tried it myself

vinoandbrie · 13/02/2022 19:21

This happened to my DH on a business trip, he was stressed to bits as it had his suit in for the next day etc, he called reception and they sent someone who managed to get it opened, with no damage to the case - worth a try?

Apologies if this is already been suggested. Hope you get it open.

NCTDN · 13/02/2022 19:22

Any luck?

Linguini · 13/02/2022 19:23
@Summerfun54321 actually I just googled it and you are correct! Sorry 🤣 I was thinking of 4 digits, which is 10,000.
Surely it's 1,000 for a four digit lock, a five digit lock would be 10000.

Wife2b · 13/02/2022 19:23

I used keys once to gouge the keys out!

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 13/02/2022 19:26

Op, if you checked 999 combinations, I afraid you’ve missed one and it’s obviously the very important one 😖 (001 - 999 is 999 combinations. 000 is also a possible combination so 999 + 1 = 1000) No idea other than split the zip!

dontdillydallytoolong · 13/02/2022 19:27

My toddler somehow changed the combination on our suitcase the first day we arrived in holiday. I googled how to pick it and it worked! You had to turn the dials and look for a slightly different cog. Google is your friend!

No its not. It is one more than that, in this case 1000 combinations. Can't believe how many people keep forgetting that 000 is a possibility
sabbii · 13/02/2022 19:27

use a pen in the zip and it comes apart instantly, how do you think your luggage gets nicked in certain countries

Casheeeew · 13/02/2022 19:27

@Summerfun54321

Just go through every single combination. 999 possible combinations, 2 seconds per combination = 33mins.
Is there 999? Doesn't it go 123 etc, 223, etc 323 etc

Wouldn't that be 1000s of combinations?

recededpronunciation · 13/02/2022 19:30

We did this - pushed a bito through the zip to split the teeth apart and get into it. Then just unzipped it all the way afterwards and it was as good as new - though we replaced it anyway realising how utterly useless it was.

womaninatightspot · 13/02/2022 19:35

I broke into a suicase like this using a metal nail file. Slide it in behind the zips and twist and it pinged open.

Tippexy · 13/02/2022 19:46

@Casheeeew read your message again 😂

Tippexy · 13/02/2022 19:49

Photo of the offending lock!
Push the button in the direction of the arrow...

What 3-digit number do you think you can make that doesn't fall between 000 and 999 Grin ?!
