What is expensive but worth every penny?

Following on from the previous thread about expensive purchases that weren't worth it, what is expensive but actually is worth it? What do you own or have done that is very expensive but you don't regret it at all?

@Swingoutsistersledge2 - lurpak has got so expensive! I stock up now when it's in tesco on a bit of an offer.

RockyReef · 14/02/2022 20:14

Our horses, the house and the children's islabikes! We have never been ones for expensive cars, as they just don't interest either me or my husband, but we own some very good quality sporting equipment that I would say was definitely worth it. Also skiing holidays - expensive but always worth it.

We had our conservatory refurbed last year, with new glazing and an insulated tiled roof. Really pleased with the result. It has turned a cold, draughty unusable room, that was used mainly for storage, into a cosy, warm space with views over the garden. Love it.

Ugh. So many people saying private school fees. How do you KNOW? What do you think you have got, apart from better facilities, that you wouldn't get from a state school education?

I believe in buying things that make me happy (yes to cashmere, great coffee, and pets). I don't believe in buying advantage. That makes me sad.

Lincslady53 · 14/02/2022 20:34

@Maireas

I agree, *@silverbubbles*. Also Lurpak. To be a bit indelicate, quality loo paper! If you get the good quilted stuff, it does spoil you for other types! (Although if anyone's found good stuff on a budget, let me know)

Because I moved them from state to private I was happy with their state school. A strong school But still I think of private schooling as absolutely worth it

You seem unable to quantify what it was exactly that you got for your money. Happy to help out. You got to help maintain a two-tier education system that reinforces privilege. Well done.

The people saying private school fees are going to naturally feel defensive. They have no way of knowing if going down the state route might have ended up with the same outcomes for their children. So by default, of course they're going to say that the fees are worth it- because they won't want to contemplate the thought that they've wasted hundreds of thousands of pounds...

SapphireSeptember · 14/02/2022 21:08

The ABH highlighter palettes I own, Dream, Aurora and Moonchild. I tried talking myself out of them, bought the Revolution ultra cool glow one instead (which is bloody gorgeous too) but then saw them on sale on the ABH website during lockdown in 2020 and snapped them up. They were half price, and they're all amazing! I'll be sad when I use them up, but having them is just wonderful. Smile

Isaidnomorecrisps · 14/02/2022 21:10

Is anyone keen on clubs? No one’s mentioned them. I’m looking at joining the RAC in London. Huge joining fee and then annual basically covers gym / swimming / social, plus can take kids. It’s a big extravagance for me but I’m relatively newly divorced, earn my own money and it’s beautiful there. I have a new partner so not doing for match-making (!), gives me somewhere fab to go for pots of tea and wine with friends.
Or I have laser eye surgery (like others on here) - tricky !
