What expensive purchase do you regret spending money on?

Or purchases, whatever it was you spent money on and was so expensive, why do you regret it? Impulse purchase in the heat of the moment? I think the most expensive things I regret spending money on are expensive beauty products which I didn't need. I enjoy using them, but regret spending precious money on them. What expensive things do you regret spending money on?

Please send me all your unwanted Babyliss Big Hair brushes and Dyson hoovers. I love both and use daily.

Mine is a necklace. A vintage oxidised silver piece of Victorian beauty. I wore it for 3 days, then had to travel. I lost it somewhere at the airport.

@Ilikewinter

Dyson fan/air purifier...... bought it because of a hot night in lockdown 1, plus id had to cancel my holiday...... at the end of the day its just a bloody fan!

Also dyson hairdryer but i returned it after a few days....lesson learnt, dont buy expensive dyson stuff!!

@Ilikewinter we also bought that Dyson fan in lockdown one . We compared it with another, far cheaper fan we had, and it went straight back .

I'm also not as happy with my Dyson cordless vacuum than when I first had it .

irishfeminist · 13/02/2022 07:57

Dyson cordless vacuum. Endless hassle and the spare parts are never available. It's an overpriced piece of shite.

GeneLovesJezebel · 13/02/2022 07:59

I bought a Dyson cordless and quickly realised that it’s crap on carpets. So I bought a cheap upright for carpets, and use the Dyson for catching spiders, hard floors, and hoovering out the car. Wouldn’t be without one now.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 13/02/2022 08:02

Dyson vacumn cleaner.Useless.It's sat in the shed whilst I happily hoover with my new Henry
Babyliss big hair.Takes forever.Never use it.
Cloud nine straighteners.My ancient GHDs are much better.The C9 ones pull on my hair.
A high sleeper cabin bed for DD.She hated not having me get into bed for a cuddle and so did I.Had to sell it and buy another bed as we had given away her other

Our last house. I put it up for sale after 7 months because of truly horrendous neighbors. I'm still getting over it.

My wedding, and subsequent divorce. The wedding was cheap really, about £3k 10 years ago, and obviously I don't regret the divorce, but had I not spent £3k on getting married to a lying, cheating, piece of crap, I wouldn't have spent another £2k on a divorce that he didn't pay a penny towards.

Fedupbuyer · 13/02/2022 08:21

@CrimbleCrumble1 we are in the process of buying a house on a busy road Blush we had to compromise.

CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark · 13/02/2022 08:21

I have become a very good reseller on EBay the past few years. I have sold all of the crap I regretted buying.
To the Mulberry Bag owners who regret it, message me if you ever decide to sell them, I’ve always wanted one, but would never pay full price.

WhatdoImean · 13/02/2022 08:25

A conservatory. Despite all the triple glazing, sun screens etc. too hot in summer and too cold in winter. When we moved, we also found that it added little in value to the place, compared to what we spent on it (too bloody much!!)

Worst thing? My fault..... Partner had some inheritance, we agreed to spend it on the house, and I persuaded her that a conservatory would add value and give us extra space.

Oh well - expensive lesson, but damn well learned!!!

user1497787065 · 13/02/2022 08:25

Dyson cordless and steam cleaners (I've bought two).

Love my Babyliss big hair though. Have had several over the last ten years though.

Agree on the Mulberry Bayswater though, so heavy.

HarrietOh · 13/02/2022 08:30

My DP has a Dyson and I much prefer my Shark.

Really want to try out the Dyson Air Wrap, it’s got such mixed reviews!

Absolutely love my peloton, but I exercised a lot already and knew I enjoyed spin classes.

shinynewapple22 · 13/02/2022 08:31

@FormerlySpeckledyHen

£300 fire pit for sons to enjoy during lockdown and the summer, Rubbish, now has herbs growing in it.

That's reminded me we paid a similar price for an upright patio heater, we bought in the Autumn of 2020 to continue meeting outdoors when it got cold, but really wasn't warm enough once it got to winter proper (plus which we weren't meant to be doing garden meets any longer). I do like them for outdoors seating at pubs but like most people we moved back to meeting our friends and family indoors again .

Allsorts1 · 13/02/2022 08:34

@SunflowerSmith I feel you on the memory foam. We recently bit the bullet and replaced with a proper spring one and I couldn’t be happier!

Ireolu · 13/02/2022 08:38

Wedding dress.... DH paid for it but over 3k was way too much for 1 day.

Samsung serif TV £600 broke after 1 yr just outside manufacturers warranty. Fortunately bought from Costco so they can sort but annoying to organise and not to have noise/news in the bedroom for a month now and during our bout with covid. Not what would expect from Samsung really.

I am trying really hard to be better with money. Now shop the sales and will return something if it is not working for me. Would rather that money in my account now.

pictish · 13/02/2022 08:38

Are hot tubs the new conservatories?

Somersetlady · 13/02/2022 08:49

If you get 2 salon power hair dryers then it takes minutes to dry your hair. Mine is long curly and thick!

Tried the dyson didn't beat my two mean machines!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 13/02/2022 08:50

Fedupbuyer my road was very busy, I’m sure yours will be less so.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/02/2022 08:51
@WhyPaulMemory sensodyne rapid relief is the only toothpaste that works for me with whitening pain. Brush with it, smear it on, do whatever you need to!
I use zoom day white which needs much less time and doesn't seem to aggravate
I used to wear the trays with Sensodyne I'm for a bit during the day too. The pain I got doesn't sound as bad as
@WhyPaulMemory
though

A black Smeg kettle (actually bought two as I thought the problem with the first one was because I hadn’t descaled it or something). The second one was even more of a disaster. After six months of use it started to look like something used on a building site, with little scratches appearing on the paintwork. I can’t blame wrong cleaning etc as I’ve been the one cleaning it with warm water and soft cloth only. Now the paint is also starting to wear away from the button on the lid that you depress to open the lid to fill the kettle. So I’m never buying a Smeg kettle again! On the other hand, I bought a Dualit toaster about five years ago after seeing them recommended here. Looks great and works perfectly and I love it. Am now tossing up whether to buy a Dualit or Kitchen Aid kettle to replace the Smeg junk. (Though I know a cheaper brand will work just as well and last just as long if not longer.😂)

TimBoothseyes · 13/02/2022 08:55

My car.

godmum56 · 13/02/2022 08:57

My kitchen. We had it properly designed as its a small space and bought decent quality but we went "safe" on the basis that we would be selling the house shortly afterwards. DH died so moving had to be taken off the table and here I am 12 years later with an expensive ish kitchen that I look at and go "meh" Ok its a first world problem but never again would I renovate in the expectation of selling.

ShallWeTalkAboutBruno · 13/02/2022 08:59

@Thewiseoneincognito

Am I the only one who goes hmmmm at all the Dyson hate on MN? Dyson products are far superior to most of their cheaper competitors. Yes they’re expensive but if you can afford it why settle for anything less?

I just imagine anti-Dyson bot farms churning out the hate on behalf of Babyliss and Hoover 😂😉🤣🤭

😉😉

I always think the opposite… that Dyson stuff is for people who have lots of money to buy because it’s the ‘done’ thing, but actually there are many cheaper products which are far superior! We used to have a Dyson vacuum cleaner, it was fine but heavy and cumbersome. When it broke I bought a Shark, which is a million times better. I quite liked my Dyson hairdryer which DH bought me as a gift, but it broke after 18 months. I replaced with a GHD one which I prefer. I really do want an Airwrap though! I am useless at doing my own hair, I tried the Airwrap in Boots and fell in love. Can’t afford one though! Oh and the in laws have a Dyson fan and have cursed themselves for spending so much on a fan which does the same thing as any other fan!
