What expensive purchase do you regret spending money on?

Or purchases, whatever it was you spent money on and was so expensive, why do you regret it? Impulse purchase in the heat of the moment? I think the most expensive things I regret spending money on are expensive beauty products which I didn't need. I enjoy using them, but regret spending precious money on them. What expensive things do you regret spending money on?

All the expensive clothes I bought when I lost toned of weight 3 years ago, I was so proud of myself that I went on a crazy mode, now I put all the weight back and more and they seat there on my wardrobe

BettyBag · 13/02/2022 09:58

Relatively expensive was a £100 gravity blanket. You know one of those weighted blankets. I was desperate due to trouble sleeping. Pointless waste of money.

I resolved my sleeping issues by giving up caffeine after lunch (yeah obvious I know).

Don’t waste your money on hair removal, once you hit menopause it disappears anyway !
Not on my chin and top lip it doesn't 😂😂😂
Gwenhwyfar · 13/02/2022 10:01

Spent a few hundred on new glasses yesterday. I think it's my biggest purchase ever as I don't own a house/car and my laptop cost about a third of that!
I think I was just too awkward to say, 'hold on, I have to start again and choose cheaper frames.

WhyPaulMemory · 13/02/2022 10:05
@WhyPaulMemory sensodyne rapid relief is the only toothpaste that works for me with whitening pain. Brush with it, smear it on, do whatever you need to!
I use zoom day white which needs much less time and doesn't seem to aggravate
I have been brushing with Sensodyne, but do your smear some on your teeth before putting on the trays? I will try anything!

I always end up spending more on new frames than I meant to!
buddhasbelly · 13/02/2022 10:10

@Gwenhwyfar I almost bought a £400 pair (a lot to me) but managed to phone up and cancel.

When you're needing glasses next try asda opticians - 2 pairs for £120 Inc lens thinning, scratch resistant, verifocals, can get a pair tinted if needed.

oviraptor21 · 13/02/2022 10:12

Who would spend over £100 on a kettle? Confused

More than happy with my Dyson hoover.

Waste of money -

 • crosstrainer (easier and more enjoyable to just go for a run)
 • expensive shower and bathroom gadgets, think sprays and spa baths (never use them)
 • any beauty/skincare product that's more than a few pounds
 • Lumea (yes it works to a degree but it's too laborious and time consuming). Thinking of getting it done properly even though I'm post menopause

Gaggia Coffee machine
Touche Eclat

American fridge freezer. The freezer side is so narrow inside, some things like pizzas I have to stack diagonally meaning nothing else fits properly on that shelf. There is one single drawer at the bottom, if I put a whole chicken in, not a lot else fits. You can’t make use of the height between the shelves because that then blocks the back of it (don’t really know the functions of a freezer but I assume it blocks airflow or something along those lines, causing ice build up despite being ‘frost free’).

Any food that has been opened and stored gets this really strange cardboardey taste, no matter how much I try to close the packaging or if I store it in lunch boxes (reducing the overall storage space). I have never ever had this with any other freezer, and I haven’t had to concentrate on closing the packaging so carefully before.

This is the first freezer I’ve had with shelves instead of drawers, so I’m putting the weird taste down to that (I guess the drawers seal the food better or something?)

I’m getting my kitchen done soon and I’ve gone for a regular 50/50 f/f this time, with freezer drawers. If I ever move to somewhere with a bigger kitchen and have the spare £££ for a fancy one, I’ll go for the one with double doors at the top and the huge freezer drawers instead.

Oh I also regret every time I end up paying for new glasses. I loathe wearing glasses, find them so irritating but I have dry eyes and hate things going near my eyeballs so daren’t take the plunge with contact lenses.

My Mulberry Bayswater handbag. Lovely looking bag but so heavy it’s just impractical for my needs.

Think I’ve used it twice and now it’s sitting all forlornly in its dust bag in my wardrobe.

I’ve gone to the Small Bayswater Satchel for the same reason. Same great style but much more practical a bag. I got a preowned but excellent condition one as I prefer the older, softer leathers. I just need to sell my Bayswaters now. One of mine in particular is so heavy!!

About 12 years ago DH and I bought a cheap doer upper in France. It became a money pit so we stopped working on it. It is not habitable yet. 6 years ago we bought another house in France that before Covid we used all the time. We will go this summer. I want to sell on first house but DH refuses and insists he will finish it one day. I know he won't. I regret buying first house and wished we bought second house sooner. A waste of 26k Euros and another 15k Euros having new roof, 5k Euros on DG and new door.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2022 10:21

Our first house.

Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 10:22

I stack pizzas vertically in my American FF. But I don't think I'd have another one. I love the water snd ice functions but I don't think I'd have another either.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 13/02/2022 10:25

We have just had our house renovated and I decided on hardwood flooring throughout the house. Took up a good bit of the budget. We have kids and dogs and live rurally so thought it made sense. Never hoovered so much in my life. You can see every tiny bit of mud, fluff, crumb. I finish hoovering, put the hoover away and the floor looks awful again in a few hours. So demoralising! Plus DS keeps slipping on the hardwood stairs 🙈. Wished I had gone for carpet.

Except for those of us whose lower leg hair has migrated to our thighs and upper lips...

I'm not in the UK. I actually spotted the frame I wanted in a particular shop and decided I had to buy from there. I haven't had new glasses for over a decade so finding frames I liked was a big thing.

Then they told me it was 2 for 1 so obviously I look for a second frame. I tried a few to see what suited without really looking at the price. The second frame was 200 and something while the first one was 69. It's the second one I had to pay for obviously.
Add to that the cost of the glass and thinning them down twice because of my heavy prescription and then all the little extras they add and it was close to 600 (Euros not pounds).
My last laptop was only £200.
Glasses are important, but if I'd been a bit more assertive maybe I could have just said I didn't care about the 2 for 1 and just got the cheaper frame.
They're being prepared now so I'll know how much of a mistake it was in a couple of weeks.

Phillips lumea IPL. Bought it years ago and just couldn't be organised enough to schedule it in and now I think the batteries are probably gone Blush I would actually be better about using it now but I don't want to pay out for another one.
Instapot - I just couldn't get on with it at all. The food just was undercooked or watery.
Nutribullet - atleast I gave this away to a friend. Who I also think doesn't use it lol. So not expensive purchases compared to other people but annoying enough.

£300 fire pit for sons to enjoy during lockdown and the summer, Rubbish, now has herbs growing in it.
We bought one at the beginning of last year when we were so depressed about being stuck indoors and not being able to go anywhere. We thought it would enhance our lives by getting us outside into the garden more.

It was only about £60 but we only used it once and then abandoned the idea because the smoke blew all over us.

Sofas four of the buggers! Bought two Ercol sofas about three years ago. They looked really nice and seemed comfy in the store. I am convinced the store sofas had different fillings in the cushions. Ours were hard and uncomfortable when they arrived. I felt like a pea on a drum lying on them. Anyway decided to give them away and buy another two hugely squishy very expensive sofas. They are comfy but not any different to the pre Ercol sofas (that I wish we had kept). However every single day every single cushion has to be plumped up or they squash flat. I try to think of it as my daily work out! It really bugs me though I would not dare admit it to DH!

Champagneforeveryone · 13/02/2022 10:55

@Procrastination4

A black Smeg kettle (actually bought two as I thought the problem with the first one was because I hadn’t descaled it or something). The second one was even more of a disaster. After six months of use it started to look like something used on a building site, with little scratches appearing on the paintwork. I can’t blame wrong cleaning etc as I’ve been the one cleaning it with warm water and soft cloth only. Now the paint is also starting to wear away from the button on the lid that you depress to open the lid to fill the kettle. So I’m never buying a Smeg kettle again! On the other hand, I bought a Dualit toaster about five years ago after seeing them recommended here. Looks great and works perfectly and I love it. Am now tossing up whether to buy a Dualit or Kitchen Aid kettle to replace the Smeg junk. (Though I know a cheaper brand will work just as well and last just as long if not longer.😂)
Go for the Dualit, you can replace the elements in them so it should technically last a lifetime Smile

I bought an Ecco man bag as a Christmas present for myself in 2019 as I had just been promoted so wanted to be suited and booted with my elegant bag holding my PC powerbook for all those meetings I would now be attending.

3 months later and I was (am) permanently WFH, in a hoodie and tracksuit pants all day and only having short meetings via Teams. I think I used the bag about twice.

I know about half a dozen people who have paid £2.5K to £4K for a sofa, and they have ALL lost about 50% to 60% on it when they sold it... Even when it was only 6 to 12 months later. They just don't keep their value - at all!
BearOfEasttown · 13/02/2022 11:01

I also don't 'get' why anyone pays £400+ for a pair of glasses! You can get good/decent ones online for less than £50, or as a pp said, Asda Opticians is great if your eyesight is a bit more 'specialist...'. DH got varifocals from there 5 years ago for £120. Specsavers and Vision Express were trying to charge £350 to £400 for the SAME glasses. Shocking! Such a rip-off!
