Silent hair appointments!

Check this out:

''We offer silent appointments because we understand that not everyone wants to socialize while getting your hair done. Regardless of your reasons, there is no need to explain or feel apologetic. Your comfort is our utmost priority. When you book your appointment online, just leave us a note at the end of the process requesting a silent appointment. Please know we recognize the need for this peaceful time and we want you to know that this option is always here, should you prefer it. A silent hair appointment: Simply gorgeous hair and peaceful down time. We look forward to seeing you soon!''

This is in the US, so I'm not sure if the UK is offering it yet but they should if people want it!

I had a hair appointment once where my stylist was chatting to the person in the chair next to me and ignoring me! Then she just stopped cutting to actually move in closer to whisper something to her so I got up and complained at reception. The other stylist was also Confused . I had my cut finished by another stylist in the end and a manicure as apology.

I didn't go back to that salon.

gogohm · 13/02/2022 09:21

Go to an independent stylist, mine has a room in her house - she's as chatty or silent as you want, she even played Taylor swift when my autistic dd went there

suckingonchillidogs · 13/02/2022 09:21

I went to a new place for my last cut. Lovely woman cut my hair but every time she chatted she'd stop cutting until she'd finished what she was saying. I'd already been there about 3 hours getting a colour done and just wanted to go! On the plus side the girl washing my hair gave me the option of turning down the head massage which was good.

orio · 13/02/2022 09:30

@Movingonup22

I don’t talk. I take my book. And I say at the start I really need some time to just not talk. And they always look relieved. It is delightful.
Genuinely, how do you read a book whilst having your hair cut? If I glance down my hairdressers always straightens me back up. Apart from when she is doing the back of course. Or do you hold it right up in front of your face....
chipshopElvis · 13/02/2022 09:51

OMG. I only go to the hairdresser twice as year because I hate the chat! I just feel awkward and dull. Although I would probably still feel rude handing in a slip of paper. I would totally book on silent Thursday or something.

astorsback · 13/02/2022 09:53

Yes please. Sign me up.

I love my hairdresser but she can go into monologue mode about her boyfriend sometimes.

I just take my kindle and earbuds.

I have a chat at the beginning and end of the appointment but in between, I like to read.

I wish they'd turn the music down though. I love all kinds of music but I really dont want to have to listen to booming club anthems on repeat for three and a half hours.

astorsback · 13/02/2022 10:00

@Somuddled

I've been thinking for a while now that I might start a campaign to encourage hairdressers to have quiet slots. But it isn't just that chatting, the loud music that most play is really horrid too. I think and afternoon a week that was deliberately quieter would be wonderful. And the same for exercise classes. Dimmer lights and much quieter music with instructors speaking rather than shouting. I want to do body pump, why does that have to include an assault on my ears and eyes as well?
Completely agree with this.

I know supermarkets have quiet times so why cant other public places?

GrandRapids · 13/02/2022 10:13

@ShittyFingers

Christ I wish my hairdresser offered this! We have nothing in common and I don’t like to discuss myself at all so the forced conversation drives me nuts

Hairdressers: what are you plans for the weekend?
Me: I’m working on a painting
HD: oh? What do you paint?
Me: dogs and people mainly
HD: oh! Tell me more!
Me in my head: “I’d rather not!”
HD: You watching Love Island?
Me: no
awkward silence
HD: “what are you watching?”
Me: “I don’t really watch TV”
HD: really??? How come??

Oh for fucks sake! I just don’t, leave me alone for the love of god

Haha this made me laugh!

Yes it's the totally predictable/unoriginal line of questioning which is so cringe. It's like they've been given training specifically on shit questions to ask. Just fuck off and leave me alone!!

Kite22 · 13/02/2022 18:16

That's nice. I always have found hairdresser's very judgemental and mean.

Odd, I've gone to many different hairdressers over the last 55 years and have never come across one who was either judgemental or mean.

As I said before, I understand we are all different and some find a chat relaxing and that it makes the whole experience, and I can see that others like the chance to sit in quietness. It is good to have this option.

Brett239 · 13/02/2022 18:31

Yes!!!

billy1966 · 13/02/2022 18:39

Sounds wonderful.

A few minutes of polite chit chat is fine but then I lapse into ambivalent silence.

I don't enjoy the hairdressers though.

Crimeismymiddlename · 13/02/2022 18:41

I like my hairdresser precisely because she does not talk.

ThinWomansBrain · 13/02/2022 18:45

Nice to have the choice.
I get on well and enjoy a chat with my hairdresser, but there are posters on the wall telling people to just tell the stylist if you'd prefer a quiet 40 minutes.

ChickenStripper · 13/02/2022 18:48

I consider my colourist and stylist friends so am more than happy to catch up. I do like the hair wash and head massage in silence though.

SpikeySmooth · 13/02/2022 18:49

I hate the hairdressers. I am very shy and find conversations with strangers difficult at the best of times. I don't have a lot in common with people who cut my hair. I try and only go when my hair is desperate for a tidy up. I read a magazine. The hairdresser usually senses I'm not a chatty sort.

52andblue · 13/02/2022 18:49

YANBU. I hate chit chat when I'm trying to relax. A ' silent appointment' would be heaven to me :)

SecretWitch · 13/02/2022 18:50

I’ve been seeing my stylist for years. I feel very comfortable with him and our personalities click. He always ask before starting “Bit of a chat today or do need a break?”. I love him for that.

ThinWomansBrain · 13/02/2022 18:50

& that's London, not US, so yes, is available in the UK (smile)

Veryverycalmnow · 13/02/2022 19:00

I hate small talk. My hairdresser is great and doesn't talk for the sake of it. Just a little bit of a chat and then focuses and let's me drink tea and relax.

Folklore9074 · 13/02/2022 19:22

Honestly hate forced chit chat. I had my hair done this weekend and I was so grateful my hairdresser was not the chatty type. The one working next to us clearly was and over the course of my two hour slot I headed about her holidays to Mexico and Devon three times.

cobblers123 · 13/02/2022 19:42

I have a mobile hairdresser, we do chat but the whole experience is so much quieter, we're not competing with half a dozen other conversations being shouted over the noise of the hairdryers and takes an hour less than a salon for highlights, cut and blow dry. Plus no blaring music

Mo1911 · 13/02/2022 19:46

Love this idea although my hairdresser has become my friend so there's no chance of it happening, still like the idea of it though!

Chely · 13/02/2022 20:01

I've had ones like this before, I loved them and tipped more than at chatty apps.

ShreddedMarmalade · 13/02/2022 20:03

I would love this. One of the reasons I avoid the hairdresser is the need to make small talk.

Grumpsy · 13/02/2022 20:06

Wish this was a thing by me 😅😂
