If there was a war who would fight?

kirstyalslap · 12/02/2022 12:30

I am keeping my head in the sand. No news. But my child has come home from school asking about the Russian War thanks parents of little charlie and I have been noticing more planes and helicopters.

It's making me scared. Who would fight?
Would our husbands be made to leave for war?
My husband is the breadwinner. I don't work at all. I have small children would he have to go? how would i feed the children? clothe? house? wash?

Would women have to go? What would happen now we have 'equal rights'?
If only men would have to go to war would transmen count? What about transwomen?

Is it just people in the army?
please put my mind at rest.

I am so scared please don't call me a scare mongering idiot. My head was in the sand until my child came home talking about something I am trying to ignore. After a bit of further probing it turned out about a 3rd of the class have been told we are going to war by their parents so that is the reason for this thread.

Quite true @Dyrene either one decide to ramp it up and we are looking at a landscape that will make the threat of nuclear endgame a picnic.

Zilla1 · 12/02/2022 20:52

The biggest threat to this country arises from internal discord. Perhaps no coincidence that this has increased in the last seven years?

OfstedOffred · 12/02/2022 20:55

Modern warfare involves far less personnel on the ground than (for eg.) Ww1/ww2

Standing army are the ones who join a conflict. At a push there's a recruitment drive to up the numbers a bit if something gets bad.

Unless your DH happens to be a reservist they are highly unlikely to be called upon to physically go and fight in a war.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 12/02/2022 21:02

I'll give it a bash.
I'm perimenopausal, overweight, unfit with dodgy eyesight but more than happy to be taught how to use a gun.

@shaneTwane

So what people are saying is we must panic buy all the loo roll!
and pasta and tinned food.

Better tell that to Putin with 130k infantry plus planes and ships in the region.

The USA had almost 3m men in Vietnam over the course of that conflict.
800,000 served in Afghanistan from the US alone.

Its a myth modern war doesn't involve huge numbers of troops, thats just what people who want to cut defence spending tell us.

If you wish to hold ground, you need troops.

FixTheBone · 12/02/2022 21:19

Absolutely what @Alexandra2001 says.

A lot of the explosions and TV coverage would be via remote control, but you still need a ground army to occupy the land and control/engage/Marshall the civilian population and flush out the inevitable underground / guerrilla resistance.

Anyone interested, you can look up 'live maps Ukraine ' and see what the US recon planes are doing, track troop movements and convoys and even see things like digital comms relays bring prepared for ground operations.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/02/2022 21:24

Thankfully DH and I would be too old! I'd be no good - if I was captured by the enemy I'd tell them everything before they even asked!

Nat6999 · 12/02/2022 21:54

There won't be conscription, look at the Falklands war, I would imagine that a war now would be like a giant game of space invaders, lots of IT, use the forces & reserve forces we already have.

Squarepegs01 · 12/02/2022 21:56

I know it's a serious subject but this thread title makes me laugh every time I see it. I picture sending my cat out to fight in a little cape and tin foil helmet. Who the bloody hell do you think would fight it? The army!

We launch major attack option one

I wish parents wouldn’t scare their children like this. I clearly remember in primary school hiding under a desk because I thought the world was going to end, I was terrified- but we were allowed watch the news in our house.
Really children shouldn’t be exposed to this kind of news.

Or you could explain it to your children so they’re less scared.

i understand your perspectives, but when humans go to the galaxies and beyond, the horrors and wonders ect
Sterpie · 13/02/2022 00:36

Children are always going to find out things like this unless they live in some kind of isolated bubble. Far better to talk about the news in a child friendly rational way with it then ignore it and let them get all their news off the classroom grapevine.

They are fucked if our cat is conscripted. Unless they have feathers and wool ( oops releasing a top secret there). Ignore this, Russian trolls.
AnakinthePadawhine · 14/02/2022 11:46

Honestly, in term of demography, neither Russia or the EU has enough men/women of fighting age to waste on a old-school war. The only war that could benefit any of the hawks would be a technological war supported by the standing Armies.
The only countries that can afford to send people to die at high volume are China and India with their surplus of single men.
However, we may be asked to support the war effort, which could include making some sacrifices and gasp work.

DragonSnapCrimson · 14/02/2022 11:56

@AnEpisodeOfEastenders

Can you imagine the millennial snowflakes being told they need to ship off to Europe to go and fight in a war? OP you’re on another planet.
I know right, can you imagine the Karen boomers going to war? They'd be asking to speak to the manager left right and centre.
Cognoscenti · 14/02/2022 11:56

The UK won't be involved in the style of combat you're envisioning, OP. I don't think there will be much "hands-on" combat. Plus, even with every healthy man (and possibly woman) of age in the UK joining the army, we still wouldn't stand a chance against the Russian Armed Forces.

Realistically, the main worry is for those in Ukraine who face the now very likely and real threat of a Russian invasion. Putin has and will use the threat of Russia's nuclear power, he's big on sabre rattling, but that's all it is. I'm not convinced he's completely sane, but he is definitely not stupid and understands MAD, and the devastating economic, environmental and humanitarian costs of launching a nuke.

Zilla1 · 14/02/2022 12:45

@Cognoscenti sane and clever but with a different ethical code and an unmanageable problem, I suspect.

TheCountessOfGrantham · 14/02/2022 12:58

Did your husband or father get a call up when we went to war against Iraq? Or to the war in Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, the Falklands?

Don't worry so much. It's scary, yes, because Russia is huge and America is huge and they don't like it each other, but world war benefits nobody!

Those were regional conflicts, with non involving super power to super power and some weren't even wars..... War may not benefit anyone is very true but it has not stopped wars throughout the ages.

Its stupid to think that somehow our generation is wiser than those that went before and there wont be another conflict - Europe has never gone a century with war - its why i am a big fan of the EU, it prioritises trade over conflict, its also why Putin was a huge supporter of Brexit, it weakened the UK and the EU also.

However, news is Russia is pulling troops back, hopefully thats correct and we wont have conflict.

the threat of pulling Nordstream 2 may yet have made him think twice.
