If there was a war who would fight?

kirstyalslap · 12/02/2022 12:30

I am keeping my head in the sand. No news. But my child has come home from school asking about the Russian War thanks parents of little charlie and I have been noticing more planes and helicopters.

It's making me scared. Who would fight?
Would our husbands be made to leave for war?
My husband is the breadwinner. I don't work at all. I have small children would he have to go? how would i feed the children? clothe? house? wash?

Would women have to go? What would happen now we have 'equal rights'?
If only men would have to go to war would transmen count? What about transwomen?

Is it just people in the army?
please put my mind at rest.

I am so scared please don't call me a scare mongering idiot. My head was in the sand until my child came home talking about something I am trying to ignore. After a bit of further probing it turned out about a 3rd of the class have been told we are going to war by their parents so that is the reason for this thread.

Not DH's being conscripted but all of the DC who've spent years dedicated to military training daily on their X Box and Playstations will be conscripted to fly the drones against their Russian equivalents. Eventually the X Boxers will consolidate and declare war on the Playstation crew before they all unite across the world to take over from the boomer gerontocracy. They'll demand recognition that gaming is better than reading, cheaper houses, that their mum's to bring their supper in their bedrooms while they game and to be able to eat chicken nuggets with no fruit and veg.

RunningFromInsanity · 12/02/2022 15:58

@jevoudrais

I think the times of land wars are mainly over. If we have a war I expect it would be a nuclear war.
Absolutely.

Wars will be fought by people pressing buttons in high tech bases in their own country, or submarines deep in the ocean. Drone strikes piloted from a room thousands of miles away.
There is no need for land troops anymore.

@LittleBearPad

Ah yes the Doomsday clock - apparently 100 seconds to midnight currently, same as last year
That clock isnt very accurate.

It's always a few second til total doom. Which isnt very realistic.

When things are peaceful they need to make it a few hours from doom, so that when we are a few seconds it actually makes people pay attention.

Liondolphin · 12/02/2022 16:07

Do you think we can volunteer our husbands? Mine has a particular set of skills that may not have been considered in war fare yet. He could drive Putin to insanity by his ridiculous loud chewing and by talking non-stop, without pause, for hours, about whatever Netflix documentary he’s watched or podcast he’s listened to. If that doesn’t drive Putin to give up, then he could start repeatedly asking him where things are, when they are right in front of him and disagreeing with everything he says even if it’s something he has said himself just hours before…

Hope you can reassure yourself OP - highly unlikely civilians would be called upon. I do feel for those with loved ones in the armed forces though as they may well be worrying.

user468375484 · 12/02/2022 16:11

Even if there was conscription the army wouldn't take me on health grounds, and DP would be in a reserved occupation (well it was in WW2 and he was deemed a key worker in lockdown so I'd assume it would be the same)

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 12/02/2022 16:13

My DH
My BIL
My SIL
My BIL

They would all go. But then between them we represent part of the RAF The Army The Navy and The Marines Grin

Family gatherings are hard work though!

bumblingbovine49 · 12/02/2022 16:16

Of course it is possible Europe may end up in a war because of what is happening in the Ukraine but I honestly believe a war like ww2 with conscription won't happen.

To be fair though I have to believe that as I'm pretty scared it would be DS ( who is nearly 18) who would be conscripted not DH who is in his 50s

Ellowyn · 12/02/2022 16:17

All bets are off the table. As PP said, they never dreamed having their mum for coffee would be breaking the law. I never dreamed people would be fired from their jobs for not getting a 'vaccine' that doesn't prevent the disease or even the spread of it.

I'm in the US and am prepared to be knocked off the power grid. We are also well armed. Over the last two years I have bought a wood stove, freeze dryer and we already have lots of generators. I'm in my late 60's and have never felt this way or done this before.

We have tyrannical governments in North America, New Zealand and Australia. They seem to want power for power's sake. I don't understand it.

Putin knows our governments are led by weak people right now and is striking while he can.

If someone told me a man with dementia, who didn't/couldn't even campaign for the position, would be elected president, I wouldn't have believed them. Joe Biden said the smartest person he knows is his porn & crack addicted, crooked, immoral son. In more wholesome normal times Biden wouldn't have stood a chance of being a parties nominee.

The media hid evidence against Biden while they demonized Donald Trump constantly. Why?

No one knows who's running the US right now and Putin is taking advantage of the silly buggers in the Democratic Party who believe being woke is more important than having strong leadership.

SomeOwlsCoo · 12/02/2022 16:23

They can have my husband if they want. He's imaginary so wouldn't make a very good solider. But I won't miss him. He's useless Grin

As for "how will I feed/clothe/house my dc". Ummm... single parents have managed for years.

IndominusRex · 12/02/2022 16:31

Does the OP realise we were at war with Russia until the late 80s?

forcedfun · 12/02/2022 16:36

I am astonished that some people's concept of military conflict hasn't moved past 1945... (Or indeed, it seems, their view of traditional gender roles).

battles will be (and already are) cyber, economic, through domestic politics (Putin has been meddling for years; we did keep warning those who were supporting Brexit).

If there were conscription I am sure it would (and should) apply equally to men and women.

forcedfun · 12/02/2022 16:38

And if you are so dependent on your husband as sole breadwinner then I never think this is a very resilient set up for all sorts of far more likely reasons (ill health, redundancy, divorce...) so it would be a good idea to look at building savings cushions, your own income stream etc.

PenguinIce · 12/02/2022 16:39

@ClariceQuiff

DH and I are both too old to be conscripted (based on the ages used in WW2) and I think my job would be classed as a reserved occupation (I was classed as a 'key worker' in lockdown).

So, not me.

I hope this doesn’t mean there will be another round of Facebook profile pic frames…….. ‘I can’t fight, I am a key worker’!
user1471439310 · 12/02/2022 17:11

You need to relax, how old are you? If like the US and the armed forces need more men they could draft but they start with young men around 18-21 not older men.

Footsanitiser · 12/02/2022 17:13

@Liondolphin
🤣🤣

MissAngorian · 12/02/2022 17:15

I'd like to volunteer my ex DP for the first wave. About time the lazy prick did something useful.

ufucoffee · 12/02/2022 17:18

Wars will be very different now to the old days especially with Russia. I doubt if there will be conscription. Very concerned that we have a tiny army now.

FourChimneys · 12/02/2022 17:28

I think lots of people would try to refuse to sign up in case it affected their mental health. Unlike before where you just cracked on with it.

I hope it would be males, females and everyone in between called up if it came to that. I don't think anyone should be able to identify out of it.

There's a lot of activity at the airbase nearby but I'm not building an air raid shelter yet.

Jacinda Ahern is going for world domination? Who knew?
BitcherOfBlakiven · 12/02/2022 17:45

@listsandbudgets I have zero desire to survive a nuclear war

WhoWants2Know · 12/02/2022 17:48

It's interesting to think about how future wars would play out, and I don't think conscription can be entirely off the table.

It sort of depends on which countries go to war and what their objectives are. Is it a fight for land, for resources or for something ideological...

The last one scares me most.

Dyrene · 12/02/2022 17:50

Jacinda Ahern is going for world domination? Who knew?

Apparently so. 😂

I’m not sure starting a thread to attract the internet’s conspiracy theory types is going to help the OP’s anxieties.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 12/02/2022 17:51

It’ll be a resources war next.

We’ve fucked the planet.

Or maybe I’ve just played too much Fallout on the PS4 lately.

notimagain · 12/02/2022 17:55

@WhoWants2Know

“ It's interesting to think about how future wars would play out, and I don't think conscription can be entirely off the table.’

v interesting politically.

Conscription is not going to be an issue in relation to the current crisis…it is way too late..

Looking down the road is there any appetite for a compulsory period of national service after which you’d be liable to annual refresher courses and potentially call up from the reserves at very short notice (something like the Israeli system)….

One for the voters…

WhoWants2Know · 12/02/2022 17:59

The way I think conscription could come into play is if the country is actually targeted. That's why it works. During WWII, there were bombs dropped from planes onto this country and everyone was at risk--so people were willing to put themselves at risk in the hopes of protecting their loved ones. We haven't felt a domestic threat like that since.

If bombs started dropping on power plants, ports, fuel depots, telecommunications hubs, etc., then conscription might involve people called up to help deal with the fallout, as opposed to actually fighting.
