If there was a war who would fight?

I am keeping my head in the sand. No news. But my child has come home from school asking about the Russian War thanks parents of little charlie and I have been noticing more planes and helicopters.

It's making me scared. Who would fight?
Would our husbands be made to leave for war?
My husband is the breadwinner. I don't work at all. I have small children would he have to go? how would i feed the children? clothe? house? wash?

Would women have to go? What would happen now we have 'equal rights'?
If only men would have to go to war would transmen count? What about transwomen?

Is it just people in the army?
please put my mind at rest.

I am so scared please don't call me a scare mongering idiot. My head was in the sand until my child came home talking about something I am trying to ignore. After a bit of further probing it turned out about a 3rd of the class have been told we are going to war by their parents so that is the reason for this thread.

Just like other wars in the last few decades, the armed forces would go to fight. They would probably do a recruitment drive but we’re very far away from conscription. YABVU to leap from “war in Ukraine” to “civilians being sent to war with no choice”

notimagain · 12/02/2022 14:31

@Chely

“ Tri service jobbie, all current serving and reserves would be pulled in to do things. Chances of a full blow war are slim though.”

Agreed…for years for European war scenarios it’s been a case of you fight with what kit you have /who you have on day one. There simply wouldn’t be the time/mechanism in place to call up civilians and turn them into combatants.

And to address another poster’s comment: in the interests of trying to ease some anxiety I see Mutually Assured Destruction has crept in again..well no, we don’t inevitably end up end up with a nuclear scenario because Russian tanks cross the Ukraine border…we moved on from tripwire type policies decades ago.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 12/02/2022 14:32

Conscription, hell no. I think if you asked, the professional armed forces who have spent years training to do a highly specialised job under mind boggling conditions would prefer not to have a whole bunch of civilians messing with their kit. 😀

Ratherdogsthanpeople · 12/02/2022 14:34

@shaneTwane

I'm not being funny op but you do realise that the British military are specialists at their jobs? They use specific intelligence, are trained in combat situations and modern warfare. They are not about to conscript a chubby barista off the high street to fight a war.
😂😂😂
whitewashing · 12/02/2022 14:35

Would women have to go? Well, I’m not going, I’m busy on Wednesday.

Chakraleaf · 12/02/2022 14:36

@Aposterhasnoname

I suppose but if it becomes a world war? what then?

The next world war will be over in a matter of hours.

This.

There is nothing we can do so don't stress right now.

BHX3000 · 12/02/2022 14:37

@AnEpisodeOfEastenders

Can you imagine the millennial snowflakes being told they need to ship off to Europe to go and fight in a war? OP you’re on another planet.
Exactly this. Last week people were saying they couldn't possibly ask their precious little children to put on an extra jumper and turn the heating off when the energy costs go up. Hell, there were plenty of adults on that thread saying 'but, but, but... my comfort!'. Yet somehow we expect ourselves to 'go to war'?

This generation can't go to war, and I say this as a Gen Z! Back in WW2 times people just got on with it. They all had 'small children', on top of jobs in factories, elderly parents to look after, and bomb raids to worry about. They got on with it, otherwise nobody would have survived the war.

We've grown up being way too comfortable and can't imagine making any kind of effort. So, it won't happen.

Dyrene · 12/02/2022 14:37

Did you not realise that we have professional armed forces in the UK?

It would never be the kind of war you’re imagining. Loads of it is being ‘fought’ in the cyber security sphere. If there’s any actual fighting, it’ll be the kinds of proxy wars we saw throughout the Cold War and since.

No one is going to round up the British population and have them fight in the trenches.

I mean, they can have my husband if they want him. 😂 They don’t though. Not for actual fighting anyway.

LittleBearPad · 12/02/2022 14:37

That’s ok you can do Thursday.
Ratherdogsthanpeople · 12/02/2022 14:40

Would women have to go?

Could you go even if you’ve tested positive for covid? 🤔 There are so many questions. Anyway, I’m also busy on Wednesday so can’t make it.

TheVanguardSix · 12/02/2022 14:41

Would women have to go?

Grin

I’ll go! I’ll take combat and a significant risk of death over a Teams ‘stand-up’ all day long.

This^^!

Warfare is not what it once was.

shaneTwane · 12/02/2022 14:53

Ok I will take one for the team and fight in Europe. I think war would be a nice change of pace to my hectic home life.

dreamingbohemian · 12/02/2022 14:57

Maybe they could just conscript all the football hooligans. They like fighting in Europe.

Furbulousnous · 12/02/2022 15:23

First we would use the active military, then the reserves, then a recruitment drive for more
Men and women to sign up prob between the ages of 18-35. It would need to be another World War before conscription every came back but yes, young women would be called up too.
As well as fighting roles though, there are hundreds of support roles, and war effort type roles.

IncompleteSenten · 12/02/2022 15:27

It's very very very unlikely (as near to impossible as it could get) that it would get to the point of conscription.

If it did, it would be because we were right here fighting for our lives and I think we'd all be ok with it.

DearlyBeloathed · 12/02/2022 15:35

The next world war will be over in a matter of hours

Yep. Nothing we could even do.

DearlyBeloathed · 12/02/2022 15:36

Would our husbands be made to leave for war? My husband is the breadwinner. I don't work at all. I have small children would he have to go? how would i feed the children? clothe? house? wash?

Why are you even giving this headspace? You write this as if we're in 1914!!

Furbulousnous · 12/02/2022 15:36

My GD was too old so ran a munitions factory, various aunts did nursing, factory work, land army, Code breaking. Other GD flew in the RAF, great uncle wasn’t medically fit so taught first aid to the medics at boot camp instead.
There are lots of roles in a war effort but let’s hope we never get there.

Furbulousnous · 12/02/2022 15:39

‘Would our husbands be made to leave for war? My husband is the breadwinner. I don't work at all. I have small children would he have to go?’

One - Soldiers get paid.
Two - you’d probably get a job of some sort
Three.- if he’s of eligible age he may sign up or his workplace would be repurposed to war effort stuff and he would work there.

Figgygal · 12/02/2022 15:43

I assume since you don't work and you have at least one child at school you have plenty of time to pay a bit more attention to the world you live in
Less ignorance might lead to less anxiety and mass overreacting

Trainbear · 12/02/2022 15:48

I'm free on Wednesday. As long as there no role play I'll dress up, green is my colour. I can grab a carving knife. They don't like it up em.

notimagain · 12/02/2022 15:50

For those still talking about conscription, seeing people off to war and perhaps a resurrection of the Land Army can I recommend this:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_World_War:_The_Untold_Story

The scenario is more than a bit dated (Warsaw Pact Forces camped out on the Inner German Border) but it gives a fairly accurate and credible idea of how quickly things could happen due to modern weaponry.

Icenii · 12/02/2022 15:52

The next world war won't only see physical battle fields. It will be fought in cyber space.

Porfre · 12/02/2022 15:55

You've been seeing lots of planes and helicopters???
And this makes you worried about war?

Do you live in Ukraine? Because that's a huge leap to make.
