If there was a war who would fight?

I am keeping my head in the sand. No news. But my child has come home from school asking about the Russian War thanks parents of little charlie and I have been noticing more planes and helicopters.

It's making me scared. Who would fight?
Would our husbands be made to leave for war?
My husband is the breadwinner. I don't work at all. I have small children would he have to go? how would i feed the children? clothe? house? wash?

Would women have to go? What would happen now we have 'equal rights'?
If only men would have to go to war would transmen count? What about transwomen?

Is it just people in the army?
please put my mind at rest.

I am so scared please don't call me a scare mongering idiot. My head was in the sand until my child came home talking about something I am trying to ignore. After a bit of further probing it turned out about a 3rd of the class have been told we are going to war by their parents so that is the reason for this thread.

This is a very interesting analysis made by a former US marine corps intelligence officer. Worth a read... I'm not saying it's Gospel, but it is a valid insight into the mess.

No they taught me to take an interest in the world.

dreamingbohemian · 12/02/2022 12:53

@LittleBearPad

Who would fight?

The Army
The RAF
The Navy
The Marines.

There won’t be mass conscription. It’s not the 1940s.

Maybe take your head out the sand. It’s good to be informed and explain things to your child.

I agree

People might actually be less anxious if they paid attention

MajesticallyAwkward · 12/02/2022 12:54

I'd recommended glancing at the news occasionally OP.

The days of fighting in the trenches are long gone so the need to conscript soldiers to use up the other sides bullets are a thing of the past.

Russia seem to pop every few years, do something insane and either stop doing the thing or carry on and nothing really comes of it (internationally I mean). But like everything the media grab on and churn out the doomsday headlines to work us up into a frenzy, often either blaming the PM, benefit claimants or immigrants.

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2022 12:58

@jevoudrais

I think the times of land wars are mainly over. If we have a war I expect it would be a nuclear war.
Now I'm really reassured Grin. DP once thought about buying a nuclear bunker when we were house hunting - beginning to wish he had now! I whinged about the decor and lack of windows www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-56015324

Seriously OP its unlikely to be a conscription situation. War is fought on a completely different level now - so much of it is a technology thing and by the time you'd trained up your average civilian to use it, it could all be over already. I mean half the partners of women on Mumsnet can't even use a washing machine or the dishwasher - what hope the controls for a drone or radar?

@GirlInACountrySong

We had these rumours when I was at school

Always something big about to happen apparently

That's true I was at school during the 1980s and war was alway imminent, even our pop songs like two tribes and 99 red ballons were about it.
EinsteinaGogo · 12/02/2022 13:00

@kirstyalslap

What a nasty remark.

Kshhuxnxk · 12/02/2022 13:01

Wow your response to @LittleBearPad is disgusting- maybe you need to take a look at yourself!

Rory1234 · 12/02/2022 13:02

I think my husband is too old to get called up. He’d be about as much use as a chocolate teapot in a conflict situation so here’s hoping it doesn’t happen Grin

Ah yes the Doomsday clock - apparently 100 seconds to midnight currently, same as last year

VelvetChairGirl · 12/02/2022 13:05

We need to mind our own business its all very odd us the tiny spec that we are condemning russia when Johnson has been chummy with them for years (russian report).

part of the reason our fuel prices are going up is because we are shipping in gas from outside russia, maybe best not to moan when you need other countries resources as you've done nothing for yourself like invest in wave and wind power.

honestly we need a government that doesnt behave like a weather-vane and never looks further then its own nose.

war never solved anything, threatening never fixed anything, talking does.

Starlia · 12/02/2022 13:06

Well I was typing out a considered response to help alleviate your anxiety OP but you have shown yourself to be a twat. So I won't bother. Good luck.

Nancydrawn · 12/02/2022 13:06

I find it very peculiar that in the midst of your panic about bread-winning husbands sent off to war one of your key questions was what would happen to trans people.

Conscription of the kind you describe won't happen. But if it did, yes, he'd have to go even if you have 'small children'. You would clean, feed, house, and wash them based on his salary as a soldier (they paid them). Or you could go to work yourself.

It won't happen because that's not the way we fight wars anymore, particularly not between superpowers.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 12/02/2022 13:09

You can't be serious with this post.

BorgQueen · 12/02/2022 13:10

OP, read a book called Savage Continent on the aftermath of WW2 in Europe and be VERY glad we are highly unlikely to ever see such horror.
I’m one of probably not very many on here who has experienced my husband going to an actual war, you just get on with it.

Even conscripted military get paid, how do you think that the Wives and children coped otherwise? Confused
You need to learn some history and stop being so anxious.

VelvetChairGirl · 12/02/2022 13:10

Now I'm really reassured grin. DP once thought about buying a nuclear bunker when we were house hunting - beginning to wish he had now! I whinged about the decor and lack of windows

with the power of todays ICBMs most bunkers from the coldwar era would be absolutely useless.

and that is the main reason we know about all these old government bunkers that are now tourist attractions, they are not disused because the cold war ended, but because technology has rendered them useless.

Glisil · 12/02/2022 13:12

@VelvetChairGirl yeah and it’s probably best to leave the talking to the diplomats, not the average folk who call each other cunts for no reason.

Footsanitiser · 12/02/2022 13:14

we were discussing this the other day and one of our teen kids said would dad be called up to join the forces if a war happened.
i said no and DH got quite indignant about it. hes in his late 50s and cant get up from the sofa without oof-ing!!

VelvetChairGirl · 12/02/2022 13:15

@100problems

The army. You know, the one our Press think are slightly dim thugs until we get to shove them into harms ways and throw a parade when they come back. If we had to rely on the rest of the Men of Britain we'd have Putin in No10 by tea-time.
debatable if that would be a bad thing considering who's in it now, at least Putin has a brain.
DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 12/02/2022 13:15

But in real life I'm not sitting on the floor rocking back and forth mumbling 'war, war, war is coming' I'm just normal!

I don't believe you.

You need some smart pills.

AuntyJanet · 12/02/2022 13:17

I think you need to take a step back and relax.

It’s not 1914. The days of amateur conscripts and hundreds of thousands of troops having pitched battles are pretty much over.

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 12/02/2022 13:19

I think I’m done with mumsnet for the day - I can’t take any more crazy irrational batshit.
