Oops it’s early, I didn’t read the fact you’re not Russian. But my opinion still stands.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 12/02/2022 08:03

Britain will never recognise Russia's sovereignty over, er, Russia.

www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-cites-truss-error-evidence-west-doesnt-understand-ukraine-conflict-2022-02-11/

These Tory halfwits can't understand their own covid rules that they wrote themselves. Do you really think it's great they're put there humiliating us on the world stage, too?

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/02/2022 08:05

The thing that worries me is what better time to invade a country than just after a pandemic when all other countries are ground down and skint.

Timings perfect for putin.

notimagain · 12/02/2022 08:08

@XelaM

Putin knows the state of the Russian army better than anyone. He won't invade. He's not stupid
They are not to be underestimated.

Mainly a conscript army, lacking some of the high tech kit the west has but they’ve had a fairly serious re-equipment programme in recent years…and as used to be said “quantity as a quality all of it’s own”.

Article from late 2020:

www.iiss.org/blogs/military-balance/2020/10/russia-armed-forces

“ As a result of a decade of modernisation and reform, Russia’s armed forces today provide the government with a far more credible tool to use – or threaten to use − if deemed necessary.”

Youngatheart00 · 12/02/2022 08:21

YANBU, I’m pretty anxious about it too. It’s always been a small, localised conflict that lit the torch paper of the world wars.

I think, though, it will be ‘cold’ because of the threat of nuclear weapons.

Imtootired · 12/02/2022 08:23

More were killed by Stalin than by the Nazis.

This is fascist propaganda, not to mention that you’ve said this in the context of Russians having a habit of killing each other. Very orientalist. I am not a fan of Putin, although I think he has done some good things. As for Russia in Syria; do you think America should be able to topple any sovereign government with no opposition?

WineAndMassage · 12/02/2022 08:25

@Imtootired

Russia is not planning to invade Ukraine. They just want NATO out which is fair enough. NATO is America threatening the rest of the world. The people in Crimea wanted to be part of Russia and a huge majority are very happy being part of Russia and their lives have improved with the investment there. It’s really sad people still believe Cold War rhetoric. NATO had made assurances it would not expand east. If you want to worry about anywhere it is America. Look at the death and destruction they bought to Afghanistan and Iraq
Exactly this.
cakeorwine · 12/02/2022 08:25

I guess invading a country can be relatively easy. Staying there in a country with many people who don't want you there is much harder.

This is a really interesting podcast about it if anyone's interested

Which is why many think if it comes to the worse and Russia does invade they might only drive as far west as the Dnieper river.

@LaPufalina

He won't do anything until the Winter Olympics finish, apparently. I have a well-connected colleague who told me.
😅 everyone always has a connection. Like there was rumours of Prince Philip having died about 5 years before he did

It is, isn't it?

As the US and their allies found out for themselves.

cakeorwine · 12/02/2022 10:27

As the US and their allies found out for themselves

As every invading army has found since time immemorial.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/02/2022 10:32

You might find that in some parts of Ukraine this might be different, they have a majority of Russian population there.

BagBoneSpawnShot · 12/02/2022 10:34

Even if they do invade, the UK and the US will stand by and do nothing. They only bully countries that can't fight back.
Also rather hypocritical of them to bluster at a larger country invading a much smaller one.
The scary part is how Iran and China will most certainly side with Russia, should things escalate.

Antsgomarching · 12/02/2022 10:38

@alesia

The UK signed Budapest memorandum in 1994
Yeah and I can’t help feeling that the countries that signed up are not doing everything they can and should have done when crimea was annexed.
KonTikki · 12/02/2022 10:53

I think that there may be a partial invasion of the Ukraine by Russia. Putin needs to be seen as the strongman, independent of the West.
The US, UK and EU will impose sanctions, immediately broken by Germany who will be more concerned about their gas supplies from Russia via Nordstream gasline.
The recent meeting between Putin and Xii is particularly worrying. Together they could wind each other up to take on the West.
And the US is more concerned with countering Chinese aggression than committing to safeguarding Europe.
The situation is serious and could unravel extremely quickly.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 12/02/2022 11:29

And people are still saying "The Ukraine."

Christmas1988 · 12/02/2022 11:31

If we do go to war it’s not going to be like ww1 or ww2 with people fighting in trenches etc. It’ll be mostly on Ukrainian soil, cyber attacks and small assassin type jobs. Feel sorry for the Ukrainians not yourself.

AllOfUsAreDead · 12/02/2022 11:31

@Nailsbythesea

He will invade and we will do nothing - receipe for disaster long term
With how stupid Boris is, I wouldn't count on us doing nothing. It won't be the right thing of course, but I doubt he'll do nothing.
cakeorwine · 12/02/2022 11:38

Salami tactics and Yes Prime Minister
At what point do you impose sanctions, use troops or go nuclear?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/02/2022 11:59

He will invade and we will do nothing - receipe for disaster long term

Would you rather he invades and we do something and it all goes up in flames immediately? So much better....

littledrummergirl · 12/02/2022 12:11

Russia keep saying its manoeuvres, they have no intention of invading Ukraine. Biden thinks he needs a war to boost popularity, Johnson is riding on his coat tails along with Nato.

Wouldn't it be funny if Russia do exactly what they say, manoeuvres and then pull back.
How ridiculous would that make the west's leaders look?

kirstyalslap · 12/02/2022 12:33

@BTYU

This is what you get with men in charge everywhere. They just don’t know how to back down. Before you know it and argument leads to a fight. I’m convinced it every world leader was female, the world would be a much safer place.

It will be bloody and lots of people will die unfortunately but it will probably be over quickly and some agreement reached.

America don’t help matters with their non stop rhetoric.

This. Also we need younger people involved too. What does a 70 odd year old president care about the future of the country? Well he doesn't
