I have anxiety so might be jumping to conclusions/worrying over nothing, but with all the talk in the news, I'm starting to worry have sleepless nights about war, please
Call me down

Oh I'm worried too. But mostly on behalf of Ukrainians.

West's reaction is likely to be more half-arsed than they admit now, just because that is how things seem to go these days. Not much appetite for more war.

But plenty of Ukrainians are willing to fight and die. Hopefully enough to make Putin think twice. But it's going to fester; Putin now knows he can get attention this way. Better get used to this....

DdraigGoch · 12/02/2022 00:47

@LaPufalina

He won't do anything until the Winter Olympics finish, apparently. I have a well-connected colleague who told me.
By which point it will be very difficult. If you ever wanted to invade the Ukraine, the best time to do so is in the middle of winter, when the ground is hard. It's thawing now and is essentially a treacle-like mud bath.
DdraigGoch · 12/02/2022 00:53

@Bagelsandbrie

Can anyone explain to me in very simple terms why Russia wants to invade (?) Ukraine…? I have no idea what’s going on and the news articles are so dense to wade through.
It has a lot of similarities to Germany in the 1930s. Russia is a shadow of the leviathan it was in its prime (just like how Germany was a broken nation after WWI and the Weimar Republic). So the leader intends to return it to its former size (just as Hitler annexed land formerly belonging to the Prussian and Austro-Hungarian empires).
sorryforswearing · 12/02/2022 01:07

What sway had the U.K. got when we rely on the Russians for gas.

That's exactly why it is a deterrent.

Imtootired · 12/02/2022 01:14

Russia is not planning to invade Ukraine. They just want NATO out which is fair enough. NATO is America threatening the rest of the world. The people in Crimea wanted to be part of Russia and a huge majority are very happy being part of Russia and their lives have improved with the investment there. It’s really sad people still believe Cold War rhetoric. NATO had made assurances it would not expand east. If you want to worry about anywhere it is America. Look at the death and destruction they bought to Afghanistan and Iraq

StoodOnAPlug · 12/02/2022 01:26

Putin is attempting to win assurances that Ukraine will never join NATO. Also, his show of force by amassing forces on the Ukrainian border plays well with the Russian public, further enhancing his reputation with them of being a strong leader. The West know Putin won't invade, but by claiming he definitely will, and by issuing threats of serious repercussions if he does, will claim victory when he eventually doesn't.

XelaM · 12/02/2022 02:41

@Imtootired 🤣 Putin is this you?

Literally no normal Ukrainian wants to be part of Russia EVER

I laughed at this because it's so true. As a Ukrainian with family over there I'm worried for them.

PurBal · 12/02/2022 03:40

@wonderfulworld45

Oh no the comments have made me worse, was hoping someone would tell me I'm being ridiculous
Sorry OP. It’s shit scary. I was raging at the news a few weeks ago because this shits serious. We are arguably on the verge of war and people are bleating about PCR tests for going on holiday.
Imtootired · 12/02/2022 04:18

I didn’t say that, I said the people of Crimea want to be part of Russia. As for the people of Ukraine, they certainly don’t all think the same way. Many don’t want to be represented by “nationalists” carrying Nazi flags.

Imtootired · 12/02/2022 04:28

And I’m not Russian I just find it sad that all the people on this thread genuinely believe America = good and Russia = evil. The only place Russia has “invaded” recently was a region with majority ethnic Russians who voted to become part of Russia. It’s good to know that the CIA’s propaganda department is working well 👍 And to everyone on this thread comparing Russia with Weimar Republic and the Nazis, why don’t you educate yourself on how many millions of Russians sacrificed their lives to defeat the Nazis. Disgusting comparison.

CoalTit · 12/02/2022 04:33

The version of events that you get from the tv news is ridiculously warped and limited and designed to play on your fears. It's Grimm Brothers fairy tales for the 21st century.

Either read a bit of history and get an overview of the relationship between Russia and the anglosphere (tldr: Russia needs warm water ports, so it has no choice but to react when the US tries to influence electoral outcomes or foment "colour revolutions" in places on its south east border. Britain and the US have been baiting Russia from Afghanistan for centuries and causing wars without affecting you) or just stop watching the tv news. You're just torturing yourself and you're no better informed than if you had stuck to celebrity news.

CoalTit · 12/02/2022 04:36

I just realised I said "south-east border" instead south-west"

user1478172746 · 12/02/2022 05:10

@Imtootired ARE-YOU-CRAZY? Or use Russia state TV channels in all seriousness? People of Crimea are hostages now, victims of propaganda. They have problems even with basic clean water. Their territory is ground for armed conflicts for years and years. With brutal gangs of "freedom fighters". And how can you call NATO presence as negative? NATO is the only reason why Russia has not swallowed whole Eastern Europe. Hope you never experience what's it's like - to be tied to "friendly brother nation Russia". Every sane country wants to escape that.

kavalkada · 12/02/2022 05:27

I wonder what would Biden do if Putin decided to put his soldiers in canada and mexico on american border?
I bet he would welcome them with open arms.

You talk of propaganda and then say that?

We all know what the Americans are like, no one better. No empire is ‘good’. But the Russians have a nasty and ongoing habit of killing their own. It is a deeply troubled nation, and currently in expansionist mode. More were killed by Stalin than by the Nazis.

Are you trying to claim that the Russians have no military involvement elsewhere in the world again? Syria anyone? As a starter for ten.

That article I posted up shows Putin’s obsession with propaganda and the identities he creates in it are very reminiscent of the Nazis.

CovidCorvid · 12/02/2022 07:33

It’s really worrying. I read something like 20% of the Ukraine population are ethnically Russian. Do they want Russia to invade?

I wish nato would just agree to promising that Ukraine can never join nato and then maybe he would back down. Surely that’s a better alternative than being invaded?

ParsleySageRosemary · 12/02/2022 07:34

“Maybe”.

thegcatsmother · 12/02/2022 07:36

Each gain Putin makes, and the West does nothing, emboldened him to try the next step. If he succeeds in Ukraine, then what if he wants a land bridge to Kaliningrad? What if he decides to take chunks out of the Baltic States and Romania, who are NATO Allies?

Would you prefer West to do more? Out of interest

Do people who say Weet will do little want that to be different, and do what instead

thegcatsmother · 12/02/2022 07:43

It is also concerning that Sweden has put troops on Gotland, and that both Sweden and Finland are closer to asking to join NATO than they have ever been.

Mollysocks · 12/02/2022 07:45

No one believes Russia is evil, I believe your government evil though. Its corrupt and dangerous and Putin is a psychopath and a murderer. They order the murder of anyone who speaks against them, even your own people. I feel sorry for the Russian people, for what he/they have done to your beautiful country!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 12/02/2022 07:47

I’d be amazed if it turned into literal war.

Don’t forget, for all the leaders’ posturing (on all fronts) there are swathes of people behind the scenes engaging in diplomacy to try to work through this.
