How many takeaways?!

I'm wondering if my husband and I are over indulging and it would be good to know if we are normal or not Grin

How many takeaways do you and your DP (not DC) have per week / month? 🤫

We used to eat out & get takeaways a lot, once-twice per week.
Then I realised
(1) just how expensive it is and
(2) how 9 times out of 10 I felt underwhelmed with the food and
(3) how unhealthy eating food prepared as part of a business can be (e.g. adding plenty of glutamic acid) and
(4) how poor the quality of the raw ingredients is (gristly, fatty, chewy meat concealed by ample amounts of highly flavour something).

These being the main considerations, we now have food out/get a takeaway occasionally, like say on Valentine’s.

The last straw for me was getting Kokoro katsu salmon and rice delivered. That meal cost me £40 with delivery overall (deliveroo take the absolute mic, too). The salmon was well past its use by date, smothered in sweet-like-cake katsu sauce. It was disgusting.
The next day I bought reduced salmon (to be eaten on the day) from Tesco for about £0.99, a packet of rice £1 and a packet of katsu sauce £0.49.
For £2.48 we had fresh, delicious katsu salmon and rice. We licked our plates that night.

That was the very end of our takeaway frenzy.

Once every 2-3 months. I also find takeaway food really disappointing.

EllaPaella · 11/02/2022 19:17

One a week. Friday nights are takeaway nights in this household.

Sterpie · 11/02/2022 19:19

I used to do once a week, but moved to an area with no takeaway, so dropped to none. I'd rather have an oven pizza as a treat these days anyway, with the current prices.

lucylucyapplejuicy · 11/02/2022 19:21

Probably 2 a month

sleaf · 11/02/2022 19:22

Once or twice a month at most.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/02/2022 19:51

It makes me laugh when people say why bother as ypu can make something nicer at home 😂 The point of a takeaway is that all you need to do is answer the door and wash the plates afterwards. No cooking required!!!

Which is just as well as I'm not great and bloody hate cooking... 😣

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/02/2022 20:12

I think the word Takeaway is rather like Bacon Sandwich in that they conjure up the thought of something that you never quite get!

"Lets get a takeaway" sounds like an indulgent treat but then you get it and end up thinking "Well it was ok....." which is why we usually have them about once every 8 weeks or so....long enough for the memory to fade! The same goes for bacon sandwiches!

Lachimolala · 11/02/2022 20:20

Now it’s twice a month, usually a Friday night/Sunday night thing. It used to be 3/4 a week until I realised that was why I was overweight and in my overdraft constantly 😑

HumbugWhale · 11/02/2022 20:28

I think we have had 2 this year so far but normally I would say about once every 6-8 weeks ish. We used to have one weekly until we realised how much money we could save if we gave them up!

Darbs76 · 11/02/2022 20:29

Me - zero. Sometimes eat out, meal with friends. DS (17) none, DD (14) about twice a month.

FoamBurst · 11/02/2022 20:33

Once a week without fail, varied as to whether the dcs do. Depends if the eldest is away of he is we often get the small ones to bed and have a take away in peace if they're all here we order for all of us.
Weve been know to have 3 a week wjendj is off for the week and we've been mega busy.

Simpkins04 · 11/02/2022 20:39

About once a month. Sometimes it’ll be once every 2 months and then one month we might have 2, so averages out about once a month.

What a perfect description.

Yes, I always get excited thinking about how indulgent and wonderful the take away will be, and then at least 7/10 times it is disappointing.

babyjellyfish · 11/02/2022 20:44

About once a fortnight?

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 11/02/2022 20:56

2 times a week. Weekends are not for cooking, for me anyway.

Weekendssuck · 11/02/2022 20:58

Absolutely, they’re rarely a particularly enjoyable meal but it’s the no cooking and just the feeling of it being a treat you can’t beat it! I’m a bit jealous if the ones who don’t tbh. We’re stuck in a viscous takeaway cycle!!

But what's the point if you don’t enjoy it?

Takeaways are often very expensive so the treat needs to be nice food, not just not having to cook.

I'd rather pay £3-5 for a Crosta mollica frozen pizza, or supermarket curry and heat it up myself rather than 2-3 times that for a takeaway I don't enjoy. Or do something very simple like cheese or egg on toast or an omelette.

RMS0209 · 11/02/2022 21:31

Once every 1.5 weeks I'd say!
I have ordered "hello fresh" & "Gousto" I like doing these x

itbemay1 · 11/02/2022 21:40

Once a week max, more like every other week

IsItTooHotInHere · 11/02/2022 21:42

We have an Indian takeaway about once every 4-6 weeks. The rest of the time, I cook 5 days a week, he cooks on Sunday, and we have dinner at the pub every Wednesday

Arnia · 11/02/2022 21:43

Usually once a week or once a fortnight. Thai, Indian or Chinese. The Thai and Indian restaurants around here are amazing and nicer than when I cook similar from scratch. I very occasionally get some sort of fish and chips/burger type takeaway but I always feel a bit bluergh after and would definitely prefer a home cooked meal to those.

Aubree17 · 11/02/2022 21:46

Probably one takeaway and one lunch/dinner out a week (no where flash!)

whereisnoah · 11/02/2022 21:52

Probably once a week for takeaway and a McDonald's or similar once or twice a week 😬

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 11/02/2022 21:53

Maybe once or twice, but also use things like pasta evangelists sometimes which is barely cooking
