After all, Prince Phillip never became King, did he?

OP posts:
PicaK · 11/02/2022 09:12

Because King is a higher rank than Queen.

RiverLola · 11/02/2022 09:13

King outranks Queen so if the actual monach is a Queen we cant have a king. If the actual Monach is a Kind we can have a queen as the king outranks the queen.

Kinneddar · 11/02/2022 09:13

Because Prince Phillip was married to the Monarch. King is 'higher' than the Queen so he couldn't be King or he'd outrank her.

Camilla will be married to the King so will be Queen as Charles will be the monarch

TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 11/02/2022 09:14

Don your hat for all of the "there are SO many theads on here already that answer that" OP Grin

But yes, as @PicaK says. PPhil couldnt be King as he would outrank the Queen

ClariceQuiff · 11/02/2022 09:15

Aristocratic and Royal titles confer a title on a female spouse, but not a male spouse - compare Princess Eugenie, whose husband remains Mr Jack Brooksbank.

It's because the system is ancient and from an era where there was no such thing as equality of the sexes.

TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 11/02/2022 09:15

or even threads

FlexibleWorkingDenied · 11/02/2022 09:16

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother, was queen (married to our present queen’s father) in the same way Camilla will be. Also all the other queens that have been married to English kings over the years such as the six wives of Henry 8th- all queens. As others have said, the title of King outranks Queen so when it is the Queen who is the one crowned- the the case of our present Queen, then their spouse remains prince (see also Queen Victoria and Prince Albert).

x2boys · 11/02/2022 09:21

She will be Queen Consort ,Not Queen Regent
You could argue the titles are sexist ,but it's then the royal family are archaic imo so 🤷

FFS!

She will be queen consort, not a Regnal Queen

If people bothered to find out the difference, there wouldn't be these stupid threads!

Sorry, but it makes me scream - even TV news programmes are ignorant of history and how a monarchy works

Anklebiter999 · 11/02/2022 10:00

@RiverLola

Yes you can

Isabella was Queen of Speain in her won right and crowned Ferdinand a Regnal King

*Spain

MorningStarling · 11/02/2022 10:06

See also William and Mary, King and Queen of England.

But that's not what Camilla will be.

MindyStClaire · 11/02/2022 10:09

Because sexism.

Male > female, therefore King > Queen, even if the queen is the actual monarch.

She will be Queen Consort, not Queen (there is a difference) she could have been Princess Consort but QE obviously thinks she deserves the higher rank.

Prince Philip could have been Prince Consort (there is no King Consort) but he turned it down and preferred Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

BiddyPop · 11/02/2022 10:22

Prince Phillip was like Prince Albert - because they were married to the Monarch who was the ruler (Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria respectively), they were only ever going to be Prince Consort. They could not be King as they were not themselves the Monarch.

However, King George VI as Monarch was married to Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) - but because King outranks Queen, she was allowed to be Queen.

The other Queen Elizabeth (daughter of King Henry VIII), never married, so it was irrelevant to her situation. (Just in case there weren't enough Queen Elizabeth's for you Grin ).

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is married to Prince Charles so is in the same position as the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth, was when married to Prince George who later became King George VI. So when Charles becomes King upon the death of his mother, Camilla would be entitled to be called the Queen as consort of the reigning monarch. In the past, it was believed, out of respect for Princess Diana and general etiquette and fears of negative public sentiment, that Camilla would not take the title of Queen. But in terms of protocol, she is entitled to be Queen rather than Princess or Duchess. She has never been called the Princess of Wales even though her husband is the Prince of Wales - but that was an etiquette and respect matter rather than an entitlement/protocol matter.

BarkminsterBlue · 11/02/2022 10:24

She will be Queen Consort. The present Queen is a queen regnant.

There is no such thing as a King Consort because kings outrank queens.

SickAndTiredAgain · 11/02/2022 10:30

Isabella was Queen of Speain in her won right and crowned Ferdinand a Regnal King

I thought Isabella was queen of Castile and Ferdinand was king of Aragon, so they ruled together, and there wasn’t a “queen of Spain” as such?

PAFMO · 11/02/2022 10:32

Funny how nobody was remotely bothered that the nasty woman that was the Queen's mother was also Queen.

That's correct. It was a marriage of convenience to unite the 2 crowns.
DillDanding · 11/02/2022 10:36

As others have said, she’ll be styled Queen but is officially Queen Consort. I’m not a royalist by any means but I’m rather pleased as it brings out all the loony Diana frothers. Plus she has perfect hair for a big ol’ crown.

BarkminsterBlue · 11/02/2022 10:37

Isabella was Queen of Speain in her won right and crowned Ferdinand a Regnal King

Technically Ferdinand was initially jure uxoris, and was already King of Sicily in his own right. Isabella and Ferdinand were a rare example of genuine co-regents but that was at least partly in order to unify the crowns of Aragon and Castile and form a Crown of Spain.

NiceShrubbery · 11/02/2022 11:21

Because she's likely to outlive Charles; when he dies they won't know what to call her because they can't call her Queen Mother. Doing it this way means, afaiu, she can be called Her Maj for life. The RF needs to self-validate and title itself to the max, as people are starting to wake up to them.

'Queen Mother' was invented for the queen consort of George VI simply because she had the same name as her daughter and it was confusing to have two Queens Elizabeth. If Camilla outlives Charles she'll simply be HM Queen Camilla.
Natty13 · 11/02/2022 11:57

It's all a big arrangement by the RF just to annoy you OP.

SickAndTiredAgain · 11/02/2022 11:59

It wasn’t, any widowed queen consort who is also the mother of the current monarch is the queen mother. I think she was the first to adopt it as her main styling, but it had been used for a long time before.
