After all, Prince Phillip never became King, did he?

OP posts:
Meandthesky · 11/02/2022 12:00

Yes YABU because it’s a very simple question and Google would answer it in 30 seconds flat, or probably the very same news item you saw that said she will become queen

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 11/02/2022 12:07

Why was the queens mother a nasty woman ? Genuinely curious !

3peassuit · 11/02/2022 12:12

thunderonlyhappenswhenits, she was said to have held racist views. I don’t know if it’s true or not and she isn’t here to defend herself.

I mean, of course she had racist views, she was literally born in the Victorian era. The entire world she grew up in was steeped in and built around racism. All of our departed loved ones who were born in that era had racist views.

I condemn racist views wholeheartedly, but in practical terms most of us recognise that 100-plus years ago things were viewed very differently and it's difficult to completely shake off the conditioning you get in youth.

RobertaFirmino · 11/02/2022 13:56

If Camilla outlives Charles she'll simply be HM Queen Camilla

Now that is interesting - what title would the D of C hold in that case? She would be the King's wife - making her a Queen too. I wonder what would happen there - does anyone know?

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2022 14:00

@SickAndTiredAgain

'Queen Mother' was invented for the queen consort of George VI simply because she had the same name as her daughter and it was confusing to have two Queens Elizabeth.

It wasn’t, any widowed queen consort who is also the mother of the current monarch is the queen mother. I think she was the first to adopt it as her main styling, but it had been used for a long time before.

Whatever happened to the 'Dowager Queen'?
Onlywomengivebirth · 11/02/2022 14:02

Just think of it like a game of cards. King trumps Queen. Always.

Soundwave · 11/02/2022 14:06

I honestly had to sit and think for a minute why she couldn't be called Queen mother. Blush oh dear. I'm glad its Friday

RobertaFirmino · 11/02/2022 14:10

I get it now, we would have two queens:
HM Queen Camilla (a dowager queen)
HM Queen Catherine (queen consort)

I've just read we actually had three queens on the go at one point!
HM Queen Elizabeth II
HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and
Queen Mary

PAFMO · 11/02/2022 14:12

Queen Mother definitely not invented for the Queen's mother.

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 11/02/2022 14:25

@BarkminsterBlue

Isabella was Queen of Speain in her won right and crowned Ferdinand a Regnal King

Technically Ferdinand was initially jure uxoris, and was already King of Sicily in his own right. Isabella and Ferdinand were a rare example of genuine co-regents but that was at least partly in order to unify the crowns of Aragon and Castile and form a Crown of Spain.

And when Isabella died, there was a struggle for the throne as Ferdinand was not important enough to govern Castile as well as Aragon, and the throne eventually went to his son in law, so look out!
Itsalmostanaccessory · 11/02/2022 14:31

@RobertaFirmino

She will be Queen Catherine.

Remember, when Elizabryh was first crowned, her grandmother was still alive. There were 3 Queens.
Queen Mary
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and
Queen Elizabeth.

They keep the title, but they are no longer THE queen.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 11/02/2022 14:32

@RobertaFirmino
Cross-posted with you. Yes. That's right.

This is starting to sound like a hand in poker!

Meandthesky · 11/02/2022 15:02

I’m sure there’s a scene in The Crown where it’s explained about Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth THE queen, in the early seasons that are set when all 3 were still alive

Camilla also won’t have a number since she’ll only be married to the king, only the ruling monarch is numbered not their spouse (as with Queen Mary and the Queen Mother)

SickAndTiredAgain · 11/02/2022 15:16

Whatever happened to the 'Dowager Queen'?

All queen mothers are dowager queens. Dowager queens are widows who were queens through their husband. Queen mothers are widows who were queens through their husband, and who are the mother of the current monarch.
“Queen mother” doesn’t mean mother of the queen, it means mother who is a (dowager) queen.

sabrinatheteenagemortal · 11/02/2022 15:17

Is anyone else looking at the word queen and thinking it looks wrong as they have read it so much in one thread? Just me... ok.

No, I was thinking that as I typed my last post!

Not just you, it's a funny word when you see it over and over again!

I think it's great news for Camilla and all the frothing over whether she deserves it or not is nonsense. Firstly, none of them deserve it. Secondly why should she be punished for having an affair when Charles did the same and he gets to become King.

Sorry, I meant use of the term , as we didn't with the Queen Mum, though I think we did with Queen Mary?

Oh I see, I think there is an element of choice in how they want to be styled. Queen Mary could have used “the queen mother” (until her son died) but didn’t. Queen Elizabeth chose to be known as The Queen Mother - possibly because there was already a dowager queen, and because she had the same name as her daughter. But she could have also been known as the dowager queen, and Camilla could as well. Camilla would presumably just be queen camilla if she was widowed, there’s more of a need for additional titles when you’ve got three queens, two of whom have the same name.

Thewindwhispers · 11/02/2022 15:40

Yabu when this has been asked soooo many times and a quick google would tell you the answer

It looks so wrong now. It looks spelt wrong, and also rude.

Queen. Queef. Queen.

CheeseMuffin · 11/02/2022 16:16

When George VI died there were 3 queens living: his mother HM Queen Mary, his widow HM Queen Elizabeth who chose to be officially styled as HM the QM and his daughter HM The Queen.

When Charles inherits then Camilla will become HM The Queen. If she outlives him then she'll become HM Queen Camilla and Kate will assume the title of HM The Queen. She won't officially be titled Queen Catherine unless she outlives William.

Pedalpushers · 11/02/2022 16:33

@sabrinatheteenagemortal was about to say the same thing...Great word, queen, but suddenly lost all meaning...
