You might of seen outrage about Jimmy Carr joking about the Gypsies that were killed in the holocaust .
Ive seen lots comments calling people 'snowflakes' for being offended.
Aibu to think if it was the other way around and he said that it was a positive the Jewish people were killed nobody would dare say 'just don't watch it then if you font like it.'
I don't believe we should ignore racist 'jokes' like this. Or they never end.

If you didn't see it, he joked that people don't talk about the positives of the Holocaust.
Thousands of people died!

@SartresSoul

I didn’t laugh at the joke about travellers but the joke about Jehovahs witnesses afterwards was pretty funny, I burst out laughing actually. My Dad and his family are Jewish. My Dad’s Grandparents fled the Nazis in the 40s and came here so I don’t find genocide or the atrocities of the Nazi party funny, in the slightest. Just that particular joke was funny to me. Maybe I should have a cold shower and think about what a horrible person I am.
Why was the part about Jehovahs Witnesses especially funny to you? You know they were tortured and starved to death too in the camps? Along with disabled, homosexuals, weak, twins, anyone that didn't fit Hitlers perfect criteria.
Youcansaythatagainandagain · 08/02/2022 16:31

@Theluggage15

I don’t like him but then I don’t bother watching him. It’s quite simple. And actually I would bet that the vast majority of people don’t know that gypsies were killed so if nothing else, it’s made more people aware.

And do stop with the tedious cancel stuff. Just because you don’t like his comedy, who bloody cares, such a childish attitude.

Of course people know that gypsies were killed. Anybody who was ever at school knows that.

I don’t think any subject should be off limits, but having started to watch an earlier Jimmy Carr routine on Netflix, it was pretty obvious that he wasn’t particularly funny, but was relying relentlessly on shock tactics, to the point where it was really boring. I concluded he’d never grown up. I think it’s sad that he has been promoted so much on TV, probably telling other people’s jokes, when his own output is so very different and much less funny.

VapeVamp12 · 08/02/2022 16:38

I take a similar view to Ricky Gervais on "offensive" jokes. It's a joke.

“’Is there any subject you shouldn't joke about?’ is no less ridiculous a question than ‘Is there any subject you shouldn't talk about?’

“Offence often occurs when people mistake the subject of a joke with the actual target. They're not always the same.”

Gervais said that a joke about a “bad” subject doesn't mean that it was supportive of that subject.

“Basically, offence is about feelings, and feelings are personal. People simply don't like being reminded of bad things.

“All jokes should be banned in case anyone is offended. Discuss.”

I think you're naive to the amount of antisemitism around today. People would definitely dare say that!

Agrudge · 08/02/2022 16:40

@youcansaythatagainandagain

I was never thought that in school

HelloFrostyMorning · 08/02/2022 17:01

To all of the 'get a grip' and 'grow up' brigade...

Would you think the same, and that this 'joke' was funny if it had been aimed at MUSLIMS?

No. I thought not.

WinniesHunny · 08/02/2022 17:01

To be fair, I didn't know the holocaust was anyone other than the Jews, so his defence of bringing the situation to light has certainly worked in my case.

Indeed Jimmy Carr would never have MADE this 'joke' about Muslims.

I wonder why?

Too much of a coward that's why. As well as spectacularly unfunny.

HelloFrostyMorning · 08/02/2022 17:03

The fact some posters find him and his vile 'joke' funny speaks volumes about these posters.

@BattenbergdowntheHatches

Would you think the same, and that this 'joke' was funny if it had been aimed at MUSLIMS?

I’m married to a Muslim. (Or a MUSLIM if you prefer). And I say emphatically yes. The more the merrier.

All religion is laughable.

@BattenbergdowntheHatches

'I am married to a Muslim.'

How incredibly convenient.

HelloFrostyMorning · 08/02/2022 17:07

@BattenbergdowntheHatches

So you have a MUSLIM husband - and you think his Religion is laughable?

Wow. Confused

You are right, OP. He set up the so-called joke by referring to the killing of millions of Jews in the holocaust as terrible and tragic. This was to let us know of his own goodness and right thinking. This kept it within bounds and he did so because he knew he would never get away with saying the murder of Jews was a positive thing. This shielded him then to take aim and say it of a minority that he could get away with saying it about. Yes it was carefully calculated and no less crass for that. He can't escape responsibility for picking on one specific group when he wouldn't pick on a number of others, as making him not racist but only making a point supposedly about other people being racist. He chose it and he's in it to his neck.

I don't go to see him but I do not want him to be on publicly funded television or radio, which incidentally supposedly has standards, as there definitely are comedians whom they wouldn't dream of having on. Why is that? Don't pretend that this is about free speech or humour.

Haven’t you ever read read about the Nazis outside of school?

SnowFlo · 08/02/2022 17:24

Would you think the same, and that this 'joke' was funny if it had been aimed at MUSLIMS?

I have found all sorts of jokes about all sorts of religions, races, cultures, sexual orientations, ages, sexs, disabilities, illnesses, funny. Punching down and punching up, I enjoy both.

Greenfields124 · 08/02/2022 17:24

He's always told offensive jokes.
I think his mindset of making light of dark things is not necessarily a bad thing.

I also think people are so quick to get offended.
I detest cancel culture.
If you don't like it don't watch it.
