You might of seen outrage about Jimmy Carr joking about the Gypsies that were killed in the holocaust .
Ive seen lots comments calling people 'snowflakes' for being offended.
Aibu to think if it was the other way around and he said that it was a positive the Jewish people were killed nobody would dare say 'just don't watch it then if you font like it.'
I don't believe we should ignore racist 'jokes' like this. Or they never end.

If you didn't see it, he joked that people don't talk about the positives of the Holocaust.
Thousands of people died!

@RegardingMary

I think it's ridiculous if I'm being honest.

Anyone turning on or attending a Jimmy Carr show knows what they're in for. A huge part of his selling point is that he's offensive.

Nobody has stumbled across that line, they've purposefully put on a show with an offensive comedian.

If you don't want to get wet, don't get on the log flume.

Ridiculous post! As a pp said, stop making excuses for Carr's racism.

Also, what kind of analogy is that? "If you don't want to get wet, don't get on the log flume?" Confused

Did you just make that up?

What about 'if you don't want to get wet, take your brolly out.' OR 'If you don't want to fall down the stairs, take the lift.' OR 'If you don't want to walk a dog, don't buy a dog.' LMFAO. 🤣

So racist jokes are fine, and it's the responsibility of ethnic minorities to make sure they avoid hearing them?

Not quite, but to be fair it's very easy for someone to avoid hearing Jimmy Carr. I mean you have to actively seek it out and listen to it.
Youcansaythatagainandagain · 08/02/2022 15:45

@AdmiralCain

I know Jimmy, we're not BFF's or anything. He's a very quiet shy, reserved respectful man. You need to understand he has a persona when he's on stage, it's a performance, a brand. The views The onstage Jimmy spouts are a million miles away from what the real life Jimmy would say. Jimmy would never say those things if you had a casual chat with him down the street.
He obviously finds it funny himself or he wouldn’t have thought of saying it!

Well that's a load of old baloney! Seeing as how EVERYONE has heard about Carr's vile remarks, without actually watching him! Confused

DrSbaitso · 08/02/2022 15:48

@cavalierkingc

Still don't understand the just don't watch it comment. If someone is being racist they should always be called out on it.

In day to day life I'm not even shocked anymore to hear comments from people being casually racist about us. No one blinks an eye either when they do.
I was in the staff room at work a few months back and at the next table were 4 members of staff discussing how bad we are!

You're from a Gypsy background yourself?

I'd say that the people Carr chose to involve in his joke are probably the best judges of what kind of effect it had. Do they feel that he stood up for them, skewering stereotypes and laughing at the people who perpetuate them and forget their Holocaust losses? Did it make them feel that he stood in solidarity with them?

Or not?

I've always tried to actively avoid him, but I heard about this.

cavalierkingc · 08/02/2022 15:52

@DrSbaitso
Yes I am a romany gypsy.
I believe if he really wanted to raise awareness for those that died he could of made jokes without saying people dying was a positive.
There's a lot to joke about us, I admit, but this was just vile.

cavalierkingc · 08/02/2022 15:54

Its angered a lot of people in my community. Who feel that we are the last minority that is socially acceptable to be casually racist about.

So he wouldn’t make these remarks in private - he just says offensive things in public in order to make money. That’s ok then!

You know whose fault that is, though? It's the do-gooders who get outraged on other people's behalf. If nobody would have made a big deal of it, only those interested in offensive humour would have heard it.

Carr and his supporters may defend his right to be egregiously and senselessly offensive, but I would hope they don't claim that they were doing you good if your community disagrees. It's not for him to dictate how his targets feel about it.

Imagine being so secure in your success and global fame that you can regularly call your own output "career enders" and truly think your brand of humour is endangered. So much irony.

Yeah, people are casually racist about gypsies. It's casual, forgettable, it's so ingrained it is invisible. This joke is the opposite. It's outrageous and offensive, it drags out the quiet prejudice and holds it up in the most disgusting way so people have to look at it.
cavalierkingc · 08/02/2022 16:00

@Agrudge
Yes I watched it. I am a big fan of comedy.
But I cant call that show comedy. He was just trying to case controversy, not laughter.

Exactly. Carr is not funny. He needs cancelling, not just because of this, but because he's a shit 'comedian.'

Mamamia7962 · 08/02/2022 16:02

I said this on the other thread, he's a very popular comedian as his shows are always sold out. If people didn't like his kind of humour he wouldn't be able to make a living out of it.

Narutocrazyfox · 08/02/2022 16:02

If you don't like it or it offends you, switch it off.

I thought it was pretty funny.

Agrudge · 08/02/2022 16:05

I think hes a great comedian . I've never seen a crowd hes playing to go quiet

Mamamia7962 · 08/02/2022 16:05

HelloFrostyMorning - Oh not the cancel culture again. That's getting so boring now.

Agrudge · 08/02/2022 16:06

To you hes not funny, were all different

I think he's a great comedian and this won't stop me watching him. The joke went down well with the audience. It's well known that his jokes can be in bad taste, there's enough warning. He shouldn't and won't be cancelled just because some people don't think he's funny.

TatianaBis · 08/02/2022 16:16

Carr being a twat is hardly news.

Theluggage15 · 08/02/2022 16:17

I don’t like him but then I don’t bother watching him. It’s quite simple. And actually I would bet that the vast majority of people don’t know that gypsies were killed so if nothing else, it’s made more people aware.

And do stop with the tedious cancel stuff. Just because you don’t like his comedy, who bloody cares, such a childish attitude.
