It feels tone deaf William and Kate talk of moving to Windsor

With most people their age unable to buy any sort of home of their own, it just annoyed me. What's wrong with Kensington Palace and a Norfolk mansion. Confused Doesn't portray the Royals in a good light to me. AIBU?

@bonfireheart

"They bring in a lot of tourism". Do they though? What is ROI, compared to if we used it to create more places attractive for tourists?
Yes. Its been proven continously. However, since COVID its probably less for obvious reasons.

OhMargaret · 08/02/2022 15:18

This hilarious.

So everything they've done up to this point has been fine but the move to Windsor has tipped you over the edge?

50% of English land is owned by the aristocracy, around 1.4% of that is owned by the Royal family on their own. They are the biggest landowners in the country after the Ministry of Defence and the Forestry Commission. Every time housing or land gets more expensive, they benefit directly. They have zero interest in keeping housing prices down, in fact they are part of a conservative culture in this country that exists purely to keep them rising.

Abra1d1 · 08/02/2022 15:19

I heard Anmer Hall would be rented out again--they wouldn't keep it.

It's actually quite sensible to start to prepare people for what might happen. Regardless of how you feel about the royals, it's going to be a huge change for the country when the Queen isn't around any more, and it's likely that a lot of people will feel quite unsettled and many of them bereft and at sea. Most of the population have never known anyone else other than this Queen.

Comedycook · 08/02/2022 15:20

Yabu. The royal family have many residences. Why does it matter where they live? We all know they're not penniless and homeless.

GreenDressRedWine · 08/02/2022 15:20

The Royal Family own an obscene amount of land and property, I don’t get why it matters who lives in which one to be honest.

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/02/2022 15:24

The queen is slowly getting ready for Charles. He is moving up and as next in line William is moving up too. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

The queen has lost an awful lot of weight I noticed since Philip died. I expect she is slowly getting her affairs in order.

Lockdownbear · 08/02/2022 15:33

@whenwillthemadnessend
I think so to, Charles must be doing more of her role and William needs to do more.

W&K like Norfolk is K not from that area? And it was ideal when he was flying helicopters but sometimes you need to go where work is.

It will also provide more chances to see kids if they are boarding at Eton. W&K don't exactly work 9 to 5 Monday - Friday.

How weird to think that the Queen is, I think, about 344th on the Rich List at last publication?

Sunak's wife's 'own personal fortune is estimated to be around £430million, which makes her richer than the Queen whose wealth amounts to £350million.'

There is an awful lot of money in this world, shrug. Apparently those two are the least of your worries, OP - you need to aim higher up the list!

SickAndTiredAgain · 08/02/2022 15:37

@Orchid876

I mean the very existence of the monarchy is at odds with the reality of life for most people, but I can't get worked up about this. Either you accept the monarchy for what they are, with ludicrous unearned tax-payer funded privilege and all that entails, or you disagree with all of it and pledge you allegiance to republicanism. It's odd if people are happy with them living in a certain royal residence for free, but it's too much privilege if they move to Windsor castle.
This is how I feel.

If there was a referendum on it, I’d vote to abolish (although I admit I’m not strongly republican and so it’s not anywhere near my list of priorities for things I want political parties to say they’ll do), but while they’re here it’s not like them moving to Windsor is going to suddenly tip me over into thinking “hang on, this isn’t very equal is it??”
Plus it’s all speculation, they haven’t come out and said “we’re moving, yay for us! Finally we can move out of the tiny place in Norfolk into somewhere decent!” so while I might vote to abolish the monarchy, on this specific issue I can’t see they’ve personally done anything wrong.

JustLyra · 08/02/2022 15:39

[quote Monopolyiscrap]They only have two palaces OP. Of course it is not enough. And they are rumoured to have their eyes on Fort Belvedere which is already occupied on a lease by a recent widow.

They’re not going to live in the house that Edward VIII made his abdication speech in when it’s likely to be the most dangerous time for the monarchy for years when the Queen dies

They won’t want any links coming up that remind people that sometimes kings don’t get to stay kings

2bazookas · 08/02/2022 15:40

Charles supposedly wants to streamline royalty so maybe he's going the whole hog and planning to abandon Buckingham Palace. And London. Devolve more royalty to the shires. No more palaces, can't afford the gas bill anyway. King Charles will rule from Highgrove . King William will rule from Windsor (so handy for the childrens' school).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/02/2022 15:42

@Poetrypatty

Are you starting threads or campaigns to get anyone worth over X million to downsize/donate/live modestly?

Can you not see the difference given how RF is funded? Inevitably conversations will be had when the Queen isn't with us, and it seems the RF are starting these now.

But they put money back into the public pot.

Other billionaires do not (outside of the taxes they absoloutley cannot dodge).

Nsky · 08/02/2022 15:46

It’s hardly their fault, it’s part of being royal.
You could agree for everyone else being ok, they should give it up to help those well off, totally unfair and unpractical.
Get real, life is unfair

sonjadog · 08/02/2022 15:50

I also noticed that this Jubilee seems to a lot about what is going to happen next (i.e. after the Queen dies). I wonder if they know something that hasn't been released to the general public yet...

AngelinaFibres · 08/02/2022 16:08

@Pinkstegosaurus

Doesn’t the Queen spend most of her time there? Maybe they want to spend more time with the oldest member of their family? Can’t imagine why it would bother me where they live though.
They will move there once the queen has died.

I thought it was more then thinking "people are gonna be most on Queenies side this year with all the Jubilee stuff - let's get a lot of our plans out to the public now, when they are most likely to accept quietly"

I think they are getting ready to formally announce Charles becoming Prince Regent due to HMQs age and general frailties.

Phillip retired at 95 and I suspect Liz will do the same. I think if it wasn't the jubilee year she'd have hung up her crown at her birthday.

ButterMeTimbers · 08/02/2022 16:21

Not being sarcastic but at 95 years old, you don't need to be an insider to realise we are looking at the end of the Queen's life in the very near future.

Even if she matches her mother, that's just 6 years away. And not 6 of her best/most robust years - probably 6 of her quietest years since becoming monarch. Which means Charles is de facto monarch if not yet de jure.

So it makes sense William and Kate would be thinking about moving and settling themselves/children/staff into whichever house they intend to use when that happens - before it happens.

I too see lots of problems now with keeping a royal family and would vote against it (I think) but W&K moving house wouldn't factor in that at all, for me.

Mulhollandmagoo · 08/02/2022 16:27

I feel quite ambivalent toward the royal family, I don't really pay them much attention, however I'm not sure where this attitude of not doing something because someone else can't, tgat seems ridiculous to me. During lockdown celebrities were being trolled for having gardens and told they were 'tone deaf' because some people didn't have gardens! It's gone a bit nuts.

VerveClique · 08/02/2022 16:29

If only all families would think a few years ahead and make changes in anticipation of what is likely to happen sideeye to PILs.

VerveClique · 08/02/2022 16:30

Strikethrough fail!

The Queen’s 95, ffs. We all know she’s unlikely to celebrate another Jubliee.
quiteathome · 08/02/2022 16:33

Charles realistically won't be king for that long. Only twenty years or so at the most really.

40-ish couple with 3 DC fancy moving a bit nearer to their parents, schools and work. Aged grandmother lives there and has a suitable property in the grounds.
