It feels tone deaf William and Kate talk of moving to Windsor

With most people their age unable to buy any sort of home of their own, it just annoyed me. What's wrong with Kensington Palace and a Norfolk mansion. Confused Doesn't portray the Royals in a good light to me. AIBU?

@IpanemaPeaHen

I don’t think where William and Kate choose to live will solve the housing crisis or the cost of living crisis in this country.
Exactly

Either you accept the monarchy for what they are, with ludicrous unearned tax-payer funded privilege and all that entails, or you disagree with all of it and pledge you allegiance to republicanism. It's odd if people are happy with them living in a certain royal residence for free, but it's too much privilege if they move to Windsor castle

Fair point. I would prefer to either abolish the monarchy after the Queen or just have a very low key one which didn't involve lavish wealth and taxpayer funded millions. So I think they could donate a fair bit of property to the National Trust and live modest lives (by their current standards, not by normal people standards.)

Why all this jealousy? It's not their fault that so many people are poor
I'm not jealous of them, I just don't want to live in a society with a huge gulf between rich and poor, which the RF epitomises. Obviously not their personal fault that people are poor.

Is there something inherently worthy about doing this? The prioerties funded by the public purse are available to the public currently in some form of another, and are being maintained for historical purposes.
Why do the NT get them to do essentially the same? At least these are being lived in. NT propeties sit empty

and live modest lives (by their current standards, not by normal people standards)

Surely this could apply to anyone who is worth over X amount. Are you starting threads or campaigns to get anyone worth over X million to downsize/donate/live modestly?

Poetrypatty · 08/02/2022 14:30

Can you not see the difference given how RF is funded? Inevitably conversations will be had when the Queen isn't with us, and it seems the RF are starting these now.

They are royals. Not comparable to the rest of us. Plus they attract money to the UK. So put this out of your mind.

Drybird2020 · 08/02/2022 14:35

Couples often move in an attempt to put the past behind them. Their Norfolk pad must have unpleasant associations for Kate now, I can quite understand why she might want a fresh start.

supermoonrising · 08/02/2022 14:36

They are Royal and bring in a lot of tourism

Yep, all the tourists are just queuing up for a glimpse of them.

Herewegoagain84 · 08/02/2022 14:37

who said we had to be pleased for them?

You're speaking as if nasty rumours are fact. They are not.
Thewindwhispers · 08/02/2022 14:40

OP if you’re going to get angry with rich people for being rich, you’re gonna be angry a lot of the tome. Let it go and maybe don’t read news stories about the royals if they’re triggering to you.

FrecklesMalone · 08/02/2022 14:48

You are being unrealistic. If we are stupid enough to have a royal family, we are stupid enough to pay for all their palaces. The whole system is abhorrent.

Poetrypatty · 08/02/2022 14:49

Fair point Smile I am getting very concerned at the moment about people not being able to afford heating, especially elderly, disabled, and children. That's probably what's feeding into general annoyance tbf.

OP posts:
SpiderinaWingMirror · 08/02/2022 14:51

If they complained about their heating bills, that would be tone deaf.
The fact that he will inherit millions and numerous properties is a fact. How he chooses to use them is neither here nor there. Presumably sonny Jim will be off to Eton in a few years. Why not live in Windsor?

StellaGibs · 08/02/2022 14:55

I think you'd be better off spending energy on caring what the government are up to than the royals. After all, the things they do and decide for the country actually affect you.

Coffeepot72 · 08/02/2022 14:59

Were you expecting they'd be on the waiting list for a council flat??

Notanewusertool · 08/02/2022 15:01

But they're super rich. That's the whole point of the monarchy. Entirely tone death as their lives have no resemblance to us commoners. It's not like they have to scrape together a deposit.

purplesequins · 08/02/2022 15:02

windsor is next door to eton.
move would make sense to allow george to be a day pupil.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 08/02/2022 15:04

Eton doesn't have day pupils.

lemongrasstea · 08/02/2022 15:05

Would you rather they moved to a 3bed semi in Birmingham? Don't really get this as being a fit target for the ridiculous property market Grin

They will keep the Norfolk place. What unpleasant associations? They love being there.
bonfireheart · 08/02/2022 15:08

"They bring in a lot of tourism".
Do they though? What is ROI, compared to if we used it to create more places attractive for tourists?

Namenic · 08/02/2022 15:09

It’s really not a big deal. Yes, they are fortunate in a lot of ways, but their lives are v scrutinised and they have to do lots of boring stuff and they will probably have to keep working until their 80s or 90s - when most of us are retired. I personally think they are better value than voting for a president - at least they bring tourism cash.

ancientgran · 08/02/2022 15:14

Maybe they are thinking long term. George is getting older and maybe they don't want a boarding school for him and want to settle somewhere that they like the schools going forward till Louis is 18. Once you have one child at senior school it is always disruptive to move until the youngest is 18 as one or other will always be at a stage where you aren't recommended to move them.

William went to Eton so maybe he wants his sons to go there but have the choice of day or boarding.

Seems reasonable to me plus he'd be close to his grandmother, I think he's close to her so again it seems perfectly reasonable.

Namenic · 08/02/2022 15:15

Royal weddings, coronations, pictures of the kids. Having a living, continuing tradition is more interesting than staid buildings which just get tourists. I’d be more interested in visiting a palace where the rooms were used for special occasions than one which had been turned into a museum. Plus, we wouldn’t have to have an election for a president every 5-7 years - which would be expensive.

ancientgran · 08/02/2022 15:17

Just seen Eton is boarding only so maybe just think it would be nice to have them closer, maybe see them at weekends or something. William might have been able to pop in and have lunch with granny when he was there.
