It feels tone deaf William and Kate talk of moving to Windsor

With most people their age unable to buy any sort of home of their own, it just annoyed me. What's wrong with Kensington Palace and a Norfolk mansion. Confused Doesn't portray the Royals in a good light to me. AIBU?

Just a thought, but I wonder where it could be at Windsor; after all there's a lot more to the estate than just the castle

Perhaps they're planning to chuck Andrew out of Royal Lodge!! Grin

Tealightsandd · 08/02/2022 17:38

Prime Minister often does have 3 homes. There's Downing Street, Chequers, and the constituency home too. Boris's constituency is a London borough so he can just use Downing Street for constituency work. The same would be the case for Keir Starmer (and Jeremy Corbyn) but a non London constituency would mean an extra home.

Monopolyiscrap · 08/02/2022 17:47

@Tealightsandd the constituency home is their private house they will return to when their term ends.
They get given two homes by taxpayers to use, that is it. And they are expected to move into Downing Street.

GoodbyeKat · 08/02/2022 17:50

I expect they spend their time on Zoopla checking out the crime and unemployment stats

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/02/2022 17:51

That was floated in the press. Personally I'd swerve that house given who he is likely ro have entertained in it.

TillyTopper · 08/02/2022 17:53

Where have Kate and William said they are even thinking about moving? I don't think they have referenced it at all - it's all just the tabloid press speculating isn't it?

Spitspotsput · 08/02/2022 17:53

Yabu. The Royal Family has nothing to do with reality for us normal people.

LittleMissTake · 08/02/2022 18:01

Kate and William don’t actually own any of their homes, do they? They are all owned by the crown and in effect they only have a lifetime interest.

Nice problem to have though!

Amner Hall was given to them as a wedding present.
SickAndTiredAgain · 08/02/2022 18:14

@AnnunciataZ

The Duke and Duchess aren't being forced out, but then neither of them, certainly not Catherine, are Londoners

Why "certainly not"? She lived in Chelsea for years and was pictured shopping and going to clubs etc. It's odd that in recent years she's been rebranded as a country girl through and through when she had plenty of city fun in her time!

I think people just mean she didn’t grow up in London.
LittleMissTake · 08/02/2022 18:27

Amner Hall is part of the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. Although it was widely reported they received it as a wedding present I think in reality they only have a life interest in that too.

Tealightsandd · 08/02/2022 18:27

SickAndTiredAgain, yes AnnunciaraZ is right about what I mean.

There have been numerous threads particularly in recent years complaining about 'Londoners' (who've been priced out of London by people from everywhere else moving to London) moving to 'Local' areas and pricing out 'Locals'.

If people moving out of London are seen as 'down from London', than likewise people moving to London are Up from or Down from wherever they moved from.

By 'locals', I presume the people saying it mean 'born and bred'. By that argument, Londoners like Sadiq Khan, are Londoners, eg. born and bred London locals. Whereas Catherine is not (obviously that's not a problem, and it's just a point of pendantry).

AuntyJanet · 08/02/2022 18:28

So, by extension, because a lot of people can’t afford to buy a house, people who can afford to buy a house should never mention it, be ashamed that they even own one, and flagellate themselves daily?

lucythejuicy · 08/02/2022 18:32

@AuntyJanet that's Mumsnet for you. If you are doing well you need to shut up because someone else isn't. I don't waste my energy on what others have - I use it to get the most that I can. I am not resentful of anyone else's situation. Good on them

JustLyra · 08/02/2022 18:33

@Blossomtoes The use of it was given to them. They don’t actually own it.

In the same way the Queen “gave” Edward & Sophie use of Bagshot and Andrew use of Royal lodge, but they don’t actually own them.

They own it. The Queen gave it to them as a wedding present. I checked, you can too. 🤷‍♀️

Andrew and Fergie’s wedding present was Sunningdale and they sold it, so they must have owned it in order to do so.

CheeseMuffin · 08/02/2022 18:51

Sunningdale, Southyork! That takes me back 😆

KirstenBlest · 08/02/2022 18:52

Southyork was sold

JustLyra · 08/02/2022 19:15

She “gave” Edward and Sophie Bagshot too but they don’t own it.

She hasn’t given ownership of part of the Sandringham Estate away anymore than she has “given” them Kensington.

For nothing else than given that the Queen to Charles and then Charles to William will be completely tax exempt estates because of Sovereign to Sovereign transfers. The Queen is far too tax savvy (some would say tax avoiding) than to give ownership of something that William will personally inherit in full.

JustLyra · 08/02/2022 19:17

And the Queen hasn’t given ownership of any property since the Southyork saga

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2022 19:31

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anmer_Hall

Coffeeholix · 08/02/2022 19:49

I think there are plenty of celebs who rub our faces in it with their wealth. Never struck me that any if the royals do this to be honest. They don’t post endless photos of themselves on holiday, enjoying themselves. They’re just getting on with life. And they haven’t made any announcement that they’re moving, it’s the newspapers that have speculated. Exactly what would you suggest they should have done differently OP?

CathyorClaire · 08/02/2022 21:06

It's not that different to a couple moving into the living accommodation at their nan's pub to prepare for her retirement

Unless Nan's second home is funded by the taxpayer it's entirely different.

They own it. The Queen gave it to them as a wedding present. I checked, you can too

Royal Lodge and Bagshot Park are owned by the Crown Estate and leased to royal leeches Andrew and Edward under exceedingly favourable terms.

Do you mean their (debatably) earned wealth?
