It's me or the dog.....!

Ok so this whole issue is really REALLY getting me down.

I live in a small (2 bed) cottage. No garden but small courtyard out front and back. Around 1.5 years ago my partner moved in with me. He's amazing, I love him to bits but he brought with his his v large dog. Now I KNOW I signed up for it. Knew he came with the dog in tow so I get that.

BUT OMG I cannot have the dog in the house any more. No matter what we do he smells. You walk into the living room and the smell just hits you. He won't stop getting up on the sofas and every now and again he makes this horrible choking noice and gobs a bit 🤢. Vet checked him over and said it comes with age (he's 11).

This evening we have come to blows over it again. He jumped up on the sofa and got mud all over it. Again. I've ended up walking out and driving off to cool down.

It feels like there is just no solution to this.I feel driven out of my own home. When I go back I'll probably sit upstairs because of the smell. I feel like such a bitch because he's so good with the dog. I just cannot stand the smell and dribble.arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

What do I do????

I wouldn’t have him on the sofa at all. If he comes in muddy he should either be towelled down or left to dry.
Throws on the sofa you can wash easily. If the dog has a bed it needs to be easy to wash. Does his collar stink?
Bath him every week. Brush him
Daily. I find wash and go good for dogs. Unfortunately old dogs do stink though.

@Chichimcgee

www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/byotrol-deodorising-spray-for-dogs-250ml

Something like this should help the smell.

I have a dog who stinks. She hates baths and will roll in anything from horse manure to dead rabbits as soon as she can, her ears stink to high heaven and her breath stinks. I do sympathise. I brush her teeth, use special ear drops and doggy deodoriser. She goes to the groomers every month to get rid of any dead hair and to have a proper scrub. Before we go in the house she’s rubbed with a towel to clean off any dirt/water and sprayed.
If I bath the other 2 long coated dogs it stinks of wet dog and the only way to avoid that is to not bath or dry properly

Thank you for this link and the advice. I'll definitely look into them xx

The dog is too big for your space. Are you likely to move?

You need covers on the sofas, and a hard floor. Soft furnishings need a regular wash.
Towel the dog after every walk, he needs to be kept clean and perhaps have a different diet- that can make a big difference.

Check where the smell comes from- ears, breath, gas, hair... you can get dog wipes that make quite a big difference.

Honestly it's unlikely to be for much longer, Weimaraners are not a long lived species I don't think.

KittenSpawnOfSatan · 07/02/2022 20:21

Simple.

Move into a bigger house and strictly keep the dog out of the main living areas, confined to only one or two rooms like a parlour or conservatory.

Chichimcgee · 07/02/2022 20:21

Blanket on the sofa definitely, it’s not like the dog will know it’s his blanket, it will be a just in case the dog does jump up blanket.
Groomers once a month (plus they do ears/nails/teeth so you don’t have to think about it)
Deodorising spray for the dog and towels for rubbing down after walks.

All that should hopefully mean no more stinky dog.

You need to see another vet.

Wipe him down with a towel when he comes in.

Book him in to a groomers and clean your carpets/upholstery regularly to help get rid of the doggy smell.

What a sad life for a dog. Also a proper bath at a groomers and a throw on the sofa is much cheaper than moving!

Wash and Go as in the human shampoo? I didn't realise you could use that on dogs?

Dogs do smell…like dogs! Even with regular grooming they still have a smell. I know, I have lots Smile if it bothers you that much could you replace the carpets with tile/wooden floor? Carpet definitely does pick up the smell of dog, no matter how much you hoover and I found if you clean the carpet it just smells like wet dog!! And have throws on the furniture that you wash and replace daily? I buy them from Primark for about £4 and they are great. Also, an external hot and cold shower to wash off the majority of the muck before they come in….
But at the end of the day, your bf and the dog came as a package. 11 is old for a Weimaraner, he won’t be around for ever Sad I couldn’t ever be in a relationship with someone who very obviously didn’t like my dogs….

Your definition of simple is very different to mine, if only you could just find a bigger house and be like oh yeah we’ll live here now 🤣
Also locking a dog in one room is bloody awful.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/02/2022 20:24

I would also recommend your DP takes him for a vet check.

Really smelly dogs can be a sign of ill-health - bad teeth, ears, infected skin folds etc.

Suzi888 · 07/02/2022 20:24

Be careful using human shampoo on a dog - I did this and then had expensive vet bill when it made his skin itch like mad Sad

KittenSpawnOfSatan · 07/02/2022 20:25

@Chichimcgee nobody said lock it in one room. What was suggested, was move into a bigger house and keep the dog out of the main living areas. Read as: allow him free roam in a parlour/conservatory/dining room, but not the front room, kitchen, bedroom.

Lol. Honestly I wish I could afford a bigger house. It would be so much easier if we had a garden to let him run around in. He gets walked twice a day but outdoor space would be better x

He does need another check. He also has a lump growing on the top of his back leg. Vet said it's quite typical for his breed and age but it still needs looking at I think

Yeah, because we can all afford houses with parlours Hmm Grin

100%, this vet sounds a bit pants.

Fatty lumps are very common in older dogs but it should be biopsied in case it's cancer.

Definitely get a vet check alongside all the great suggestions you've had - it could be a simple solution like a change in diet due to an allergy, a dental cleaning or antibiotics for a minor skin infection.

My friend has a large dog and I love him so much but fuck me he stinks 😂
He has a massive tongue so his licks are soaking and he just smells. But I love him so I just gag and then let him on my lap
I don’t love with her tho and when I do visit, I take clean leggings for every day plus spare to get the smell off
He’s short haired, he’s bathed lots, he’s just a bonkers big smelly dog

I have a short haired chihuahua and she smells of damp wotsits. Tiny little hot tongue 👅

QOD · 07/02/2022 20:32

*i dont LIVE with her

Rowgtfc72 · 07/02/2022 20:32

Dh never liked my elderly smelly Jack Russell. He lived with him for 8 years. The other elderly smelly Jack Russell lived 5 more years after that. She was blind , deaf and incontinent and loved to lick dh. And she smelt of incontinent old lady despite baths, floor mopping and daily washing of her bed. She would also sneak on the sofa when he wasn't there. And moult. They were my exh dogs and he had very little to do with them.
He bawled like a baby when the the last one was pts.

😂😂 omg this post made me laugh. It's so so relatable. Sometimes I have to change 2, 3 times a day because he gobs on me and leaves massive slobber patches. It's gross!

AutomaticMoon · 07/02/2022 20:39

Chlorella, Magnesium, these help with BO in humans and I should think dogs too. There’s a lot of info online about diet, herbs, etc. Try strong probiotics and raw diet or cutting out kibble. There’s many things. Vinegar spray should neutralise the odours in the air.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 07/02/2022 20:39

Clearly what your DP is trying is not working so it is time to do something different. Perhaps a dog behaviouralist could help with the sofa thing? As for his age, my step dad has a 13 year old dog who visits me daily. I have a brand new sofa. He is allowed to get on the bit with the throw on it, and not the rest. He is learning, because it is consistent. If he gets on the sofa at night you need a throw or something, or to be in a different room.

Oh another note, I wonder if, now you have focussed on the smell, you find yourself obsessing about it? I get like this when someone is eating noisily and it is all I can think about? If that is the case, you may want to do some attention focus exercises too.
