Do any of you have a pet that you actually just can't fucking stand?

My cat. Approx 11 years old and counting! Wink I've had him for a decade. A part of me does love him, but he's a knob and lessens my quality of life rather than add anything to it. He's so whiney and food obsessed and I am seldom able to sleep the whole night through because of him.
When he departs I shall be sad, but I won't miss him, and there will be relief in a way.
He has a wonderful life here with us, and I won't give him away, because he's old and is our responsibility.
Have you ever had a love/hate relationship with a family pet?

@ThinWomansBrain

Aaah - poor little baby - I'm sure he has some redeeming features.

I love mine, but she does have a tendancy to beg for food - and then eat too quickly or too much, especially if she's been on her own for what she considers too long - and then regurgitate it and come and give me a big kiss to tell me. Hmm
fortunately wooden floors rather than carpet.

My cat used to eat her food too quickly and vomit everywhere 🤢. I found a different type of bowl which slows em down. Been using it for some time now, and it's made a huge difference. She's only sick occasionally now, and that's usually my fault for not spreading her food or biscuits thinly enough. Couldn't be without it

No but a family member has a dog that embarrasses me due to its bad behaviour, thus I won’t be seen out in public with him in case anyone thinks he’s mine.

Harls1969 · 08/02/2022 21:22

I love my cats. But one of them is a pain in the arse. She hasn't managed to learn to use the cat flap so regularly wakes me up yowling to go out or come in. Sometimes she yowls, wakes me up then runs off (doesn't want to go out, just wants to make her presence known). She's long haired and sometimes has shit stuck in her fur. She wanders behind my car as I'm reversing onto the drive. She yowls when DH and DS are on calls (they both WFH). She sits on top of the fence in the pouring rain then, when she's soaking wet, she comes in and demands a fuss! She's a dick, but she's our dick! One of the others likes to piss in shopping bags, attacks for no apparent reason and won't let me go to the toilet by myself! The other is a lovely soul (unless you're a bird or rodent), but forgets she's just been fed and asks for food every time we go in the kitchen. Cats eh Confused

Husbands dog that I have inherited.

Spoilt, aggressive, resource guards.

Literally zero control over him. Very alpha dominant type temperament, give him any affection and he will walk right over you. Literally.

Will attack any dog he sees. And goes to kill them. Has to be muzzled on walks and always on lead. As he’s a husky he needs ALOT of walking.

Will resource guard any and everything and bare teeth to my husband. He won’t do it to me now.

Neurotic. Licks walls and everything if husband goes out, and will whine constantly. Has to be kept separate to cats with baby gates as he has such high prey.

He’s very beautiful and a real head turner. But very very demanding to live with.

Feeascotime · 08/02/2022 21:43

No. Love every pet I have chosen to have.
Better rehomed and loved by someone else, than resented.
Believe you me, they will adjust.
Wonder what they would say about us?

mowly77 · 08/02/2022 21:44

@KittenSpawnOfSatan ah well maybe we should stop arguing over the internet eh. You just sound really aggressive in your posts & I reacted. I really, really love cats & I'm worried your kitten you seem to hate v. much & have said horrible things about will be mistreated. But hopefully he won't and it's just your sense of humour.

"for the kids ennit" is simply a catchphrase that sums up some parenting ideals: get the children material goods; pets; experiences; etc that the parents don't actually want because their offspring pressure them into it. But then they're left to pick up the pieces.

When I was a kid I wanted a baby sister; a dog; and a pony. My mum was a single mum and we lived in a council flat. She stood firm and rightly so. Particularly as she died from cancer when I was 10. We did have a cat though.

I guess 1% cute is ok; maybe as he gets older his percentage will rise?

Good luck. Sorry If I was rude.

KittenSpawnOfSatan · 08/02/2022 21:45

@Feeascotime they would say, “Mwah ha haha ha ha” or similar with a glinty eye and wagging tail as they lick your teacup whilst your head is turned.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 08/02/2022 21:48

Yes, my grumpy old cat. We had her from 9 weeks to 19 years and loved her to bits but she massively impacted our quality of life. She couldn't be trusted so every room in the house needed a door shut at all times. She could only access rooms when supervised. She was an indoor cat by choice, she was deeply unhappy outdoors. She regularly ate anything left unattended, chewed cables, vomited everywhere, bit us, scratched us.........but we'd never have rehomed her as she was our responsibility.

She survived cancer twice, ate spiders for snacks, had kidney disease and yet made it to 19. Life was easier when she passed, but I miss her mardy, furry little arse more than I'd admit in real life.

KittenSpawnOfSatan · 08/02/2022 21:51

@mowly77 that’s ok, it’s not an argument is it, it’s just opinions. Accusing someone of ‘Sounding really aggressive in your posts’ is something that people tend to chuck around in a passive aggressive manner. I’m pretty upfront, but the least aggressive person you’d (never) meet.

I get you. I’m over 50 though, different generation, do not subscribe to the get the kids all the material goods and experiences they want.

I’ve also been a lone parent like your Mum and had a parent die from cancer when I was 13. This is the thing about public forums, you never know who you’re talking to or what our personal stories are like, and how much strangers can actually have in common.

No offence taken and you haven’t been rude.
Also hoping he gets cuter Grin

SillyHousewife · 08/02/2022 21:52

I'm going through this with my 12 year old Cavalier. I love her but honestly can't stand her most of the time. She barks at nothing all the time unless she's pinned to my ankle trying to blindside me and send me arse over head. When she's sleeping she snores so loudly that we can't hear the tv. If she's not sleeping or at my ankle, she's:

  • reverse hacking
  • making disgusting wet grunting noises
  • licking so intensely that she sounds like a zombie eating someone's intestines
  • even as I write this, while not normally flatulent, she's just let a long squeaky one fly
  • scratching. Omg the scratching! It comes with several of the previously mentioned noises.
Her old age is getting very hard to live with. She's addicted to licking cane toads so in the summer, she can't go outside unattended so no relief there either.

We do love her but the constant disgusting noises are driving us crazy.

I promise you, Madam Biteyrat had a much better time with me than she would've with almost anyone else. Most people won't want a biting rat that largely ignores other rats and hates people, especially one that's already an adult and therefore probably not going to live much more than a year or two, but she had as happy a life in my mischief as an antisocial social rodent is gonna get.
Strangeways19 · 08/02/2022 22:20

Thyroid issues probably, I have a cat who regularly beats up the neighbours cats, she friendly bites but it does actually hurt, she's 14 but I've never felt like I don't like her. She's part of the family

Licking, clingy behaviour and barking at nothing are all clear signs of canine cognitive decline @SillyHousewife

You're dog very likely has dementia, and is anxious and confused (it occurs in dogs from age 8 and is massively underdiagnosed)

Have you sought veterinary or behavioural advice? Meds like Selgian can help. She doesn't have to spend her golden years anxious and confused.

babybrain86 · 08/02/2022 22:23

I've had three rabbits; Dutch, Rex & Lionhead.
The rex was lovely she had such a sweet docile nature and would happily give cuddles, she could be a bit of a princess though and allowed the lionhead to fuss over her day & night (she didn't need to make her way over to the food bowl, he would bring it too her 😅)
The lion head was just the most beautiful, playful guy with the biggest personality. He liked to sit on our shoulders and loved nothing more than having a wash and blow dry (such a pampered prince) He pined himself to death a couple of months after losing his mate (rex). I'm still devastated they're gone.
Our Dutch, well she was a different story altogether, hated us most of the time she would hiss and lunge at us even we were filling her food bowl. Every month or so she would have a day or two when she was lovely, affectionate even. We still adored her, even though she was a vicious bitch most of the time! We rescued her, previous owners just kept her locked in a small hutch constantly, I think she would have been lovely if it weren't for that 😪

Kudos to everyone here who has a bit of a bothersome pet but loves and cares for them anyway, unlike this twat footballer Zouma

Lulan · 08/02/2022 22:28

@SoosanCarter

My tortoise. He’s a Sex Beast. He lives in a sectioned off part of the garden because he will race over and start trying to mate anyone’s shoes. Bashes my feet and it hurts! Chases the cats and the dog, who is scared of him. I love him, and wouldn’t rehome him because it’s hard to find good homes for tortoises, and I couldn’t inflict him on anyone else!
Chases the cats and dog......? what is he a flying tortoise? Shock
Shunter350 · 08/02/2022 22:29

This is possibly the best thread ever. Fascinating, funny and informative..

CleansUpButWouldPreferNo
I saw that and emailed the RSPCA on their chat line, said I hoped his money wouldnt put them off prosecuting his evil shit arse, well missed off the last bit. Wouldnt comment on it of cause. He thought it was funny, kick the shitty git out of football and fine his sorry shitty ass. Poor cat!

purpleme12 · 08/02/2022 22:55

It's absolutely disgusting that video
Poor cat so little defenceless
Makes me sick

Scianel · 08/02/2022 23:02

I'm both stressed and amused just reading this!
To anyone that wanted a dog and has been put off, I stayed with a friend who has a Shih Tzu and she was the least hard work ever. Didn't smell, quiet, not actually overly affectionate so no clinginess, not that fussed about walks, completely well mannered and non destructive and fond of a late lie.
I liked hanging out with her.

mycatisannoying · 08/02/2022 23:27

@Scianel

It's a Shih Tzu I have! I adore him Smile

My DH’s cat is an arsehole. Attacks bins and recycling bags and does revenge shits in prominent places if one dares to disturb his destructive behaviour.

singswithitsfingers · 08/02/2022 23:36

Perhaps rather against the spirit of the thread but this is making me feel very grateful for my elderly cat. When younger he was constantly getting into fights, getting injured, expensive vet visits etc. all a complete pain. but now he's very cuddly...

jentinquarantino20 · 09/02/2022 04:04

Always with cats. Pissing and shitting under my bed, scratching my sofas, escaping and getting pregnant. One even ended up on the roof with 3 fire engines trying to rescue her. They aren't easy pets at all. All seem to have a form of self importance and I bloody hate litter being kicked everywhere. Never again.

Kate0902900908 · 09/02/2022 06:35

This is pie head. Brings rubbish in the house and hides it in my bed. Doesn’t clean herself at all so has to be washed. Eats bread!! From the packet!!
Scratches the sofa and then pretends to be dead when stopped. Do love her though 😂
