Do any of you have a pet that you actually just can't fucking stand?

My cat. Approx 11 years old and counting! Wink I've had him for a decade. A part of me does love him, but he's a knob and lessens my quality of life rather than add anything to it. He's so whiney and food obsessed and I am seldom able to sleep the whole night through because of him.
When he departs I shall be sad, but I won't miss him, and there will be relief in a way.
He has a wonderful life here with us, and I won't give him away, because he's old and is our responsibility.
Have you ever had a love/hate relationship with a family pet?

@Pinkmouse15 Shame on you all, these are sentient creatures...It is like people who have children then find they resent how they curtail their freedom.

Can’t compare pets to children. That’s just daft.

oakleaffy · 08/02/2022 18:39

No-
I’ve loved all my pets- Even son’s little gerbils and fish.
Would be pointless having them if they caused resentment .

We have an 8 month old puppy. Going through the phase, it's the worst decision of my life I'd forgotten how much hard work they are. He's an attention whore, has to continually be touching you, jumps, talks, zoomies. These can be 10% of his day, but wow what a 10%. Argued more in the last 5 months with hubby than in last 20+ years. But like others on this forum, he believes once you bring them into the family it's for life.. me I'm beginning to wonder.... but your posts have helped, knowing I'm not alone.
Ohhhhh, I promise you it does get better. I spent my dog's puppyhood in a state of bitter regret Grin But I wouldn't be without him now. He brings so much love, laughter and happiness to our home every day unlike the cat!

@Arabellla unfortunately the little bugger is only too real.

Helpful hint .... the schoolies tend to contribute to MN threads on bitter topics than this, and during half terms. It’s been that way since 2009.

RegardingMary · 08/02/2022 18:41

@Susu49

He plays a lotvof rugby, so he's huge himself, and he's been doing it since he was a pup.

When they get back DH looks best collapse, thd dog looks smug.

I have 5 cats. I love them dearly but they each have quirks that I could really do with out

One is obsessed with plastic packaging.
If he spots the bread wrapper out he has tunnel vision in getting to it and kicking the wrapper
One is obsessed with anything thread like and wats to eat it. He has pulled a thread from a rug and eaten it and got stuck as the thread is still attached to the rug and he’s got the rest in his mouth. No idea if we weren’t on hand to take it out if his mouth and cut the thread off the rug.
One just goes around scraping the walls, doors or kitchen units after he has been in the litter box and one likes to rip up any paper he comes across
And one can’t get enough of sniffing shoes. He positively drools when he has his head stuck into a slipper or shoe. You have to check footwear before putting shoes on or you could get a soggy foot

Kennykenkencat · 08/02/2022 18:43

Licking the wrapper

Sweetcheeks21 · 08/02/2022 18:43

Not exactly… but we do have two Guinea pigs which being absolutely no joy to our lives. They refuse to be handled despite lots and lots of effort on our part so have just become two more mouths to feed and clean up after. Very much regret getting them but youngest child seems likes them at least 🙄

But you don't know in advance that you're getting The World's Most Malevolent Rat, do you?
AdoraBell · 08/02/2022 18:44

Two of my lovely dogs. One is a greedy fucker and the other one won’t eat unless she’s in a separate room. Then she walks away from her food, the greedy fucker runs in like he’s never been fed and she looks at me like 🥲he’s eating food. Every. Fucking. Day.

Headachefromhells · 08/02/2022 18:44

My cat, absolutely love her so much but hate her too. Had her since she was 4 weeks old - we rescued her. She's now 12 years old. She a big flat thing who gives the best cuddles and constantly wants food. But she's been pissing on every bit of soft furnishings, carpet, rug, bed, washing or pillow she can get near. She's been thoroughly checked out by the vet and is fine. I think she actually has a glint in her eye as she does it.
I can't bare it.

mowly77 · 08/02/2022 18:44

This thread is really making me laugh. I also have two cats; one lovely and cute (although a deadly mouser and yes stepping on a small furry corpse in your bare feet at 6am is not particularly life affirming) But the old boy, an utter pain the arse. In fact @BabyInTheJungle he sounds just like yours but with LICKING. Yes this very ugly ratty old cat will lick any part of your human body at any opportunity whatsoever & wow does his breath stink and wow is it disgusting. And wow I sometimes let him do it because he is old and he loves it so much and I feel sorry for him.

Again, the cat rescue people really did a number on us, they said he was “friends” with the young cat we actually wanted to adopt. That was a lie. They hate each other.

He has ruined several rugs due to his incontinence so now we have no rugs in the house. Cosy. He’s got hyper-thyroidism, an asthmatic cough, and yowls a lot. At night. He’s as thick as mince and spends a lot of time just staring at you, waiting for a body part to appear for him to lick. I suspect he’s got dementia. He could be 12, he could be 14, no one knows. I suspect he will live a long, long time as no good deed goes unpunished.

I’ve had cats all my life and this is the first time I’ve had a cat I wasn’t fully in love with but into each life comes a little light, a little shade. Moral of the story: pick carefully at the cat shelter.

Headachefromhells · 08/02/2022 18:46

Oh yes and you have to do very specific stroking or she bites you - and the ideal stroking changes daily Confused

Blanketpolicy · 08/02/2022 18:51

Love our 8 year old lab to bits, but must admit there are part of dog ownership I really could do without.

£75 for insurance + £12 for health club (flea/worm/vacs) is killing me.
Every year his birthday comes around in March and I wonder how much higher this insurance can go!

The hair! Full moult twice a year for around 4 weeks. Hair everywhere. One of them is always in December and it takes the shine off of putting up the Christmas decorations.

Shell4429 · 08/02/2022 18:51

I got a kitten - or was pushed into getting one by a friend who’s cat had given birth. My sons adored her but I resented her a bit because I did all the practical stuff such as the cat litter tray, cleaning up sick etc. Once it was just my me and my youngest, who is on the autistic spectrum she lived in his room and was so needy it irritated me. She followed him everywhere around the house and wanted constant attention but he loved all that. I just wanted freedom! Then she got older and started having seizures and was diagnosed with kidney disease and arthritis. I started to feel sorry for her and it was heartbreaking to see her deteriorate. I didn’t want to make the decision to have her put to sleep because I knew my son would be upset so the vet told him in the end it might be kinder. We arranged for the vet to come to the house and we were both there when it was done and she died in my son’s arms, a month before her 20th birthday. We both sobbed, and I was surprised at how upset I was. I cried more for that little cat than I did for my father.

hiredandsqueak · 08/02/2022 18:54

I love ddog but she is a real pain in the backside a lot of the time. She's often called Bellarse or Bellend. Today she is Bellarse as she got me up three times between 10pm and 1am supposedly needing a wee but more because she just wanted company. I woke her at 6am when I got up as I needed something out of the room she sleeps in and she's been huffing at me all day as she prefers not to be woken before 8am. She stomps on my feet to summon me and expects me to follow her instantly. She is so fussy with food yet will scavange anything whilst out and about.

oakleaffy · 08/02/2022 18:55

One of the most shuddersome stories I heard recently is of a woman cuddling her little whippet youngster
She felt something rubbery at his rear end, and saw something like an elastic band dangling from his sphincter.
She pulled- and it was a worm!!
A roundworm!

The meds she uses are only for tapeworm not roundworm.

I had the same experience with an RSPCA Lurcher puppy
Tapeworm proglottids wriggling out of her ring piece while I was stroking her
Dogs home said “
We only treat for tapeworm in puppies if we see symptoms “
It was a while that I could eat a pot noodle.

@Wagsandclaws

I have three overlords. Two orientals ( the same as Siamese except in colour ) and one actual Siamese.

I have had orientals and Siamese all my life and I love their neediness and yowling. Attached is a photo of my three - the girl ( she's the lightest is the most standoffish miserable Siamese I've vet met. She won't purr either 🤣

She only loves my 13 yo ds, that's it absolutely no one else. At all. Ever.

The other two are typical of their breed, chatty, needy and an utter delight. Love them of of course if I've never come across one like her before. The boys are just so different but I'm glad she doesn't have any violent tendencies .

Very nice! Here's my two orientals. The ginger one (Apricot point lol) is a biter of the highest order. The little bat eared lilac point lad is a nice one.

Yes my exes cats!
They are only 8 but they just annoy the hell out of me!
Can’t leave anything on the kitchen worktop for a split second or they try and eat it.
Trip over them scavenging for food 10 seconds after they are fed.
Fighting in the middle of the night so I think we’ve got burglars and in the summer filling my laundry room with the remains of rodents and sometimes birds that are still alive.
Will not be sad when they leave this life!

DinaDirvla · 08/02/2022 19:02

Our old dog, a Patterdale terrier, was a feral, savage little nightmare.

She was aggressive and attacked other dogs big or small by jumping onto their back and grabbing them by the scruff, or just aiming straight for the throat and dragging them to the ground. She was aggressive to people and nobody but us could risk making eye contact. We had to lock her away when we had visitors and children were not allowed near her. She bit someone on the doorstep, bit a physio, bit me, and saw six dog trainers. She cost me £4k in spinal surgery and was on a cocktail of expensive painkillers for most of her life. I had to walk her at 5am so we didn't bump into anyone else, if she saw another dog 100 yards away she screamed in fury and foamed at the mouth - not just while the dog was in sight, but for the rest of the walk.

She made our lives hell for 12 years and finally when she was in too much pain to sit or lie down comfortably, we let her go. We both cried and cried for days, and there is a song I still can't listen to now without dissolving and it's been 3 years. I adored that horrible shitty fucker of a dog, I think we bonded over the trauma of her existence. Grin

I am absolutely besotted with my cat and dog but sometimes I secretly think about the extra the sleep I will get when they are all gone . (Although I cannot imagine a home without furry animals in it - am a glutton for punishment!)

Sallylovesdaisy · 08/02/2022 19:04

@ThinWomansBrain

Aaah - poor little baby - I'm sure he has some redeeming features.

I love mine, but she does have a tendancy to beg for food - and then eat too quickly or too much, especially if she's been on her own for what she considers too long - and then regurgitate it and come and give me a big kiss to tell me. Hmm
fortunately wooden floors rather than carpet.

My cat used to eat too quickly and would vomit..a lot Envy. I found these bowls and they truly help. She's very rarely sick now and if she is it's usually because I put too much grub in her bowl. It's one of the best things I've ever bought
