Do any of you have a pet that you actually just can't fucking stand?

My cat. Approx 11 years old and counting! Wink I've had him for a decade. A part of me does love him, but he's a knob and lessens my quality of life rather than add anything to it. He's so whiney and food obsessed and I am seldom able to sleep the whole night through because of him.
When he departs I shall be sad, but I won't miss him, and there will be relief in a way.
He has a wonderful life here with us, and I won't give him away, because he's old and is our responsibility.
Have you ever had a love/hate relationship with a family pet?

I have 25 Guinea pigs and a huge collection of reptiles. I'd say the only thing I can't stand is the lifefood. They scratch about all night 🤢

CauliflowerBalti · 08/02/2022 17:28

I have a house rabbit who is a super stroppy needy diva bitch. No idea how old she is she was a rescue. I’m hoping about 9. DH told me off the other day because I was stroking her and telling her it’s ok, she can let go now, she doesn’t have to hang on for us… ;-)

I do love her. And I certainly admire her force of spirit. She’s extremely assertive. But I will not miss her, I don’t think.

MrsPetty · 08/02/2022 17:32

Yep. Totally relate. I had our nineteen year old cat put to sleep last year - she’d become doubly incontinent or just to much of a dick to go outside and bury it. I can’t say I miss her, or her cat hairs everywhere, or her constant whining for food… I’m never having another pet!

Iamtheweedonkey · 08/02/2022 17:42

My rabbit, he's a total cock! Growls and tries to bite me at every opportunity. He loves my DD, will sit like a fat little kingpin on her back, surveying his domain, I go near him and the fucker pounces at me, growling.

TheRemotePart · 08/02/2022 17:48

I have 3 cats and love/hate them daily.
One has a medical condition and was expected to die much earlier- but no. He’s lives on. Like the queen mother
They steal any and all unattended food /raid fridges/ bins /neighbours. I’m surprised the council hasn’t called me and told me the hun men have squished one of them in a wheelie bin yet.
One of them hates to be petted , but I see her outside getting petted by neighbours. How ungrateful - They’re all rescues

Lem1984 · 08/02/2022 17:49

OP I'm the same but my cat is 17, smells and sometimes decides to shit where she pleases!

MumofBreck · 08/02/2022 17:49

lol, I can relate ;-b

I have a ten year old cat just like yours.

She also, unfortunately, is a biter. If she wants a snack in the middle of the night, she bites me in the armpits. Her medicines are bankrupting me and we are already skint, but I love her so much. She saw me through the loss of my Dad and my young brother. She sat with me all day every day in bed for a fortnight when I had double pneumonia last year and the doctor wouldn't come out to me and I thought I was going to die.

She is my best friend.

Xmasfairy86 · 08/02/2022 17:51

This twat.

He’s so young and needy 🤣 older cat was not as needy as he is as a kitten.

Pinkmouse15 · 08/02/2022 17:51

Shame on you all, these are sentient creatures that you all chose and just maybe you should have thought this through a little more carefully. It is like people who have children then find they resent how they curtail their freedom. I have met parents like this when I was health visiting who clearly resented their children or actively disliked them, making the child deeply unhappy.

Xmasfairy86 · 08/02/2022 17:52

I mean I love him dearly but fml he’s tiresome!

grapewine · 08/02/2022 17:52

This thread has just affirmed my decision to never get a pet. No way I would bother with this.

@HeechulOppa

Yes, Dcat2. A breed we wanted for years due to to the breed’s nature of being sweet and doglike and extremely loving and gentle. We have a cat of a different breed (Dcat1) who also shares those characteristics but is much more manic aka eternal kitten, so wanted one a bit more placid.

Well apparently Dcat2 is the outlier for his breed. Easily the most neurotic and grumpy animal I’ve ever met. Hates any human contact but has an anxiety attack if you’re not in the same room as him. Lazy as sin and screams in the middle of the stairs Until we answer him so he knows what room we’re in and doesn’t have to strain a muscle looking for us. Will only drink from a mug. In one particular room. Which we have to give manual access to as DCat1 can’t be trusted there. Eats one brand of cat biscuit only and nothing else but occasionally decides he now hates it and we have to spend £££ trying to guess his nibs’ new preference as he would literally starve to death refusing to eat. Pisses on the floor daily and doesn’t cover up his mess in the litter tray meaning we can’t feed them at bedtime or the house will stink by the time we wake up. He is unequivocally and without reserve a dick, hates dcat1 (who loves him dearly) and I adore him.

Maine coon or Norwegian forest cat? My poor old mc can't understand why we had the nfc 😆

I love these. My contribution is a Russian hamster. They’re tiny and look really cute, but attack you as soon as you open the cage. Ours escaped and got ‘ taken away’ by the cat so I thought that was (phew) that -the last we’d see of it. The next day a neighbour knocked on the door with it in a cage. I reckon it attacked the cat so violently he dropped it in their garden. My daughter hated it. (It was hers)
My ex had a red setter that compulsively stole food but would then hide under the table yowling as tho he was being beaten- out of guilt. That was really annoying.

sadpapercourtesan · 08/02/2022 17:58

Two silver dollar fish (called Nickel and Dime) which we bought a few years ago and I was in love with them at the time, they were so sparkly and spotty and gorgeous and caught the light beautifully.

They eat EVERYTHING. All my tetra neons and little zebra fish. The red jellybean shrimp. They even murdered my Japanese fighter fish! And they Will. Not. Die. It's just the two of them now, swimming round a big ghost town of a tank. I feel resentful every time I feed the fuckers.

We had a Russian hamster once. They are indeed evil tiny little sods. Our cats were terrified of it, as were we all.
Payitforward55 · 08/02/2022 18:01

Lol this is exactly why I'm holding off getting a dog or a cat, what if you don't gel with them or they don't like you? 😬

Shunter350 · 08/02/2022 18:01

@HeckinMiffed

my husbands dog is a complete bellend. He was only young when we met, totally harassed my old dog, liked to w**k until he was neutered, jumped everywhere on everything, didnt listen, eats shit-literally makes himself ill by eating random rubbish/rotting fungi/any faeces, rolled in fresh human poop on our holiday, steals food right in front of you from kids hands, doesnt listen/obey despite thorough training, obsessively chases/eats white paper and his crowning achievement was setting our house on fire whilst trying to steal food.

I loathed him for years, waiting for him to mature. Or die. Gradually I've come to love him. For all his fuckwittery he;s the kindest, most honest, goofiest dog I've ever met. Not a bad bone in his body. Not a brain cell either. I like him enough that we recently rescued a dog of the same breed as him. He's taken her under his wing and is teaching her how to dog.
Since the fire he is locked safely in a XL crate when home alone and has a pet cam on him.

"Since the fire..!!"..brilliant. Made me guffaw.ShockGrinGrin
Cherryberrybonbon · 08/02/2022 18:03

I’m so glad I’m not alone 😂😂😂 my dog drives me up the wall, constantly hungry, steals food, absolutely barmy! He’s hot hungry he’s fed twice a day with the odd treat, tried him with an extra bowl and is still the same. I wouldn’t give him up but he does make me pull my hair out

My two cats and other dogs just look at him like OMG what is wrong with you

RegardingMary · 08/02/2022 18:03

We inherited Polly when my grandmother died.
I've always been suspicious of birds in the house and until Polly turned up we had nothing with a bird on, not an ornament, cup, or anything.

Since Polly we seem to have acquired multiple parrot related gifts off relatives. Which I hate. I dont want parrot mugs, and parrot figurines, I certainly don't want decorative plates with parrots on. I didn't even want the original parrot.

Then there's Polly. She's in the kitchen, she flicks her seed at us. She's learnt the kids and the dogs names and shouts them for their tea, all day, shes recently started with 'Alexa stop' which is a pain in the arse. She swears too.

Polly just doesn't give a shit.

Fwaltz · 08/02/2022 18:04

I’ve had cats all my life, but our current one (a rescue cat, 4 years old when we got him), is an absolute rotter. He properly bites, scratches and goes out of his way to attack us - all unprovoked! BUT, he also loves being around people - never happier than being close by. Like previous posters, we’d never get rid of him as he’s part of our family now, but I really wish he wasn’t quite so vicious!

Angie1403 · 08/02/2022 18:05

I’m freaking out reading this! we get the first of 2 kittens this Saturday (the next in 4 weeks) and the breeder took (in my mind) evil delight in telling me that torties are particularly naughty. We have gone to great lengths for the littles sh**s and they aren’t even here yet! Our poor dog; he’s 10 bless him so I’ve no idea what he’s going to make of the whole thing. I do genuinely feel like I made a huge mistake suggesting it to DH as his birthday gift (its a big birthday). We’ve had cats before but it’s been a long time since we had kittens so I’m bracing myself for it rather than looking forward to it. I fell like that’s a shame, I should be excited no? I also keep tropical fish and there are 4 tanks dotted about about the place. It’s going to be interesting!

JBo2 · 08/02/2022 18:05

No offense, but I wonder if your cat thinks you're a knob too for not wanting to do cat things when he wants.

JillyY44 · 08/02/2022 18:06

We had an absolute bastard of a cat who just died. He was 12 and died suddenly of a heart attack, literally had his breakfast, went on his merry way to cause his usual morning chaos and dropped down dead. I cried buckets and was sad for ages but… he was a total tool and life is now much better without him. We also persevered with him as we firmly believed we owed him, after all we made an informed decision to be his carers. He was a cute kitten but it immediately became obvious that something was wrong. It’s hard to explain but he just kinda had a screw loose. Fully grown he weighed in at 1.5 stones (and he wasn’t fat). That’s when he really got dangerous. I could handle him for the most part and there was genuine affection between us, but he could turn in an instant and I did have a couple of nasty injuries from him over the years. We debated rehoming at a couple of crisis points but always concluded he would end up being passed from home to home or worse, he would be put down. We’ve always had lots of cats around and I had to take elaborate steps over the years to divide up the house in order to protect my other cats (who were there first). In later years we added a big old Tom cat who held his own against bastard cat just fine. The damage he caused over the years now makes us laugh but at times was distressing. We once had a gas fire fitted, a coal effect one. Very nice, very expensive. The day after it was fitted I came home from work and he’d literally torn the coal bed section to pieces all over the living room floor. He could open cupboards, he stole food, tore open biscuit bags and randomly, seriously attacked both me, my husband and all the cats.
He had a sad start. Was found in a box on a moor, his siblings all dead. A well meaning lady took him in but kept him in a cage in her garage until we took him. Vet theorised brain damage from lack of socialisation. I’ll always know I did right by the little swine but I’m relieved he has passed over the rainbow bridge!

JBo2 · 08/02/2022 18:07

In all seriousness have you researched how to redirect his unwanted behaviour? Not saying it's easy, but maybe we need to look at it from an animals perspective being as they aren't humans
