Jimmy Carr’s Racist Joke

Not something that I find funny but it has highlighted something. Racism against Roma/Sinti people is widely acceptable and not treated in the same away as racism against other minorities. Years ago I worked for a local authority in an area with a fair few traveller sites and noticed that staff that would never dream of using slurs against black or Asian people openly did so against travellers. AIBU to think that this is the ‘joke’? Anti Roma sentiment is unfortunately widespread.

Errm...Carr's joke and this discussion hinges on the genocide of the Roma and Sinti, a great deal of which took place in Auschwitz.

He does lots of rape jokes too. Has there been much outrage over those? Genuine question as I often feel jokes about male violence against women are seen as"acceptable" in a way racist jokes aren't. I know there was a lot of anger over a Down's syndrome joke he made.

I think he knew exactly how many people would get wound up & take it literally though.

Well, seeing as the word 'woke' is a word rooted in AAVE that means an awakening to racism against black people, and this is a thread about racism to another ethnic minority, I don't see what there is to hate about being woke 🤷🏽‍♀️

I can use a different quote from the same post? So I don't care about travellers and think that they shouldn't be discriminated against but in reality some are arse holes and make a mess, breaking down fences etc. So again I don't know. It's a tough one.

I never said that they couldn’t. What I said was some white women on social media will wear long skirts and bangles and call themselves “gypsies” as if it’s a fashion choice. A maxi skirt and some bangles doesn’t make you a “gypsy”.

Netflix also released a couple of specials by Daniel Sloss, featuring jokes about disability and rape. Quite a lot actually.

I don't particularly find Jimmy Carr funny but my take on it was more that he was highlighting how certain groups seem to be easily targeted. I don't necessarily think it should be taken at face value.

This. Jimmy Carr goes out of his way during his act to highlight what he's doing, anyone he think he's making the same jokes as Bernard Manning either hasn't actually watched what they are complaining about or is just thick.

Would a joke about the KKK killing black people be funny or acceptable?

Sarah Silverman makes similarly 'racist' jokes about black people (assuming you don't understand the joke).

It's fine to dislike any comedian but once we start saying a joke is the same thing as a belief it satirises we are fucked.
