I can't think of anything frozen fruit or veg that's really good to have in the freezer. Trying to save money and less waste. What is your ultimate frozen food for cooking. I'm not a brand snob so happy to try out cheaper if it's worth it! Not ready meals though 😃

Waitrose frozen croissants and pastries. Or the Pret chocolate croissants you can get at Tesco.

EcoCustard · 05/02/2022 20:51

Frozen blueberries & smoothie mixes are nice. Kids eat the blueberries frozen or on porridge, yoghurt, in apple crumble. Smoothie mixes in natural yoghurt with honey are good for breakfasts. Spinach great for adding an extra veg. Green beans are a hit in our house. Corn on the cob. Iceland southern fried coated chicken (from breast fillet) is nice with salad in wraps. The frozen apple strudels are nice for pudding too.

I've had the croissants and they are lovely. I'll have a look out for those too.

Think I'm going to have to buy a spare freezer for the garage 😀

I got some frozen whitebait from Aldi once and it was so good. DH got some from Morrisons and it was disgusting!!
Also like frozen berries, mcCain chips, sweet potato chips and scampi. I also usually have some frozen fish fillets like salmon or haddock and frozen prawns.

gaggiagirl · 05/02/2022 20:53

Frozen spinach, sweetcorn, peas, green beans and chopped onion. Very useful.
Frozen breaded chicken for katsu, chicken Milanese etc.
Ice lollies of all kinds. Low calorie and cheap and easy desert for kids.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 05/02/2022 20:55

I discovered some frozen fish covered in a tempura batter in Lidl. I think they do other types of batter too but can't remember.
Anyway I put it on a brioche roll with mayo and lettuce and it was absolutely delicious.

HelebethH · 05/02/2022 20:55

@Murderinparadise I love the sound of your cauliflower cheese in soup. Will certainly be trying that.

@PinaColadaNeeded I do a fish pie similar to yours but instead of making up idaho mash I just put the frozen mash pellets on the top and put them in the oven. Works fine. Sometimes if I have breadcrumbs I add herbs to them and sprinkle it on about 10 mins before the end of cooking.

ISmellBurnings · 05/02/2022 20:58

Frozen chopped onions are a lifesaver!

Frozen leeks and spinach are well worth it too, no waste as you just use what you need.

Mediocrates · 05/02/2022 20:58

I might get kicked off Mumsnet for mentioning Farmfoods Hmmbut they do huge bags of veggie gyoza and they're an ace snack/lunch with some salad and a dipping bowl of soy sauce

Mossstitch · 05/02/2022 20:59

Only recently discovered frozen chopped peppers😍 saves wasting that half pepper that goes soggy in the fridge, cheaper than fresh, saves Al that chopping and I think are better in the cooked from scratch pasta sauces/chilli's that my veggie son likes

SquirrelFan · 05/02/2022 21:00

Thirding roasted Mediterranean vegetables - from Sainsbury's. Throw them into a pan with deconstructed Italian sausage and a bit of olive oil and you've got a lovely pasta sauce.

Mossstitch · 05/02/2022 21:00

Oh and aldis skin on fries are cheap and better than any other frozen chips I've tried🍟👍

Devo1818 · 05/02/2022 21:00

Haven't read the thread but frozen spinach! Chuck it in everything. Pasta sauce, stir fries, curries, pies etc - effortless added nutrients

OhWhyNot · 05/02/2022 21:03

Frozen onion, garlic, ginger, chilli, basil, thyme, sage (Tesco) thai mix (M&S) all make cooking quicker and the frozen herbs are nicer than dried and good value

Vegetables spinach and mash (all supermarkets)

Aldi do an amazing salmon en croute for £3.99. It’s better than other supermarkets and fantastic value

OhWhyNot · 05/02/2022 21:07

I use frozen mince from Sainsbury’s or Waitrose (5% fat)

And frozen berries are great for smoothies

The frozen pastries have been good sadly have no room for them in my freezer

I have found using more frozen foods has really helped with cooking and works out cheaper

TheVolturi · 05/02/2022 21:12

M&s has amazing frozen chopped chilli, garlic basil etc. Really good for cooking.

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 05/02/2022 21:20

Iceland do a pack of four creamy cauliflower and broccoli gratin and they're lovely! They do packs of stir fry too, I usually get the duck one and get three servings out of it for work lunches

CovidCorvid · 05/02/2022 21:27

Bird’s eye mixed veg steam bags, they do a few different combos.

LaDoIceVita · 05/02/2022 21:30

Is there a good brand for frozen fish? The only frozen fish I've found has been nasty.

I buy it from Aldi - I think it's The Fishmonger brand. Never had any complaints from the fish eaters in the family.

Tricked2003 · 05/02/2022 21:31

Frozen raspberries/blueberries / mixed berries/cherries are great to add frozen to muffins or puddings. (also good in porridge) frozen strawberries are good in jelly.
For soup:- leeks, cheap mixed veg, chopped onion, diced swede, sweet potato,
Frozen herbs are a must!
Extra fine green beans are better than fresh, spinach and sweetcorn very handy too.
Mixed peppers for casseroles and stir fry.
Casserole mix is handy for a quick meal,.
White fish, salmon, raw king prawns.

I boil extra pasta and rice and freeze in single servings.
Left over celery gets chopped up and frozen.

I batch cook and freeze meals, also leftovers. I couldn't live without my freezer!!!

oopsIdiditagaintoo · 05/02/2022 21:33

I'll look out for that too 😀

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 05/02/2022 21:33

Morrison’s have frozen garlic, chilli and ginger in cubes, about 85p a big bag. Frozen wonky mixed fruit, handful in Greek yogurt.

MotherWol · 05/02/2022 22:01

I like to make sure we have at least one thing from each of these categories:

  • something nugget-shaped for the kids (chicken dippers, Iceland fish goujons, strong roots veggie nuggets)
  • veggie burgers in a ziplock with a pack of brioche buns
  • something potato based (oven chips, waffles, hash browns, Tesco mini latkes)
  • something bready (pancakes/crumpets/English muffins)
  • gyoza/dumplings
  • pizza
  • couple of ready meals
  • frozen veg (peas, sweet corn, spinach, edamame, mixed veg)
  • ice cream
Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 05/02/2022 22:09

@PurpleDaisies

Frozen spinach and sweetcorn are always in the freezer here (with peas and veggie fish fingers).

Frozen pizza is a regular weekend treat. Dr Oetker is often on offer and is our favourite. Also onion bhajis, samosas and naan are always in for Indian take away night. Much cheaper than a take away.

I use the freezer a lot for nice bread that’s been reduced or batch cooking which definitely helps cut our food bill.

What do you like to eat?

I love all cusine! Asian, Mexican etc. I love dim sum as well. Just balancing what I like with the kids! My eldest likes lasagna so a frozen sofritto mix sounds great!

Another vote for frozen avocado, it's great. I get the chunky breaded cod too..use my freezer loads for home made soup. Partbake rolls. Wraps defrost really quickly for a quick lunch.
Also frozen salmon and white fish. Cook from frozen. Way cheaper than fresh
