I can't think of anything frozen fruit or veg that's really good to have in the freezer. Trying to save money and less waste. What is your ultimate frozen food for cooking. I'm not a brand snob so happy to try out cheaper if it's worth it! Not ready meals though 😃

Frozen spinach and peas. I freeze lemons too. There's a really good one pot pasta dish using this so it's a cheap meal to cook from frozen.
Always have fish in so I can make fish pies.
Frozen fruit for crumbles/smoothies.
Pastry (for pies above)
Herbs -just crumble into food, no waste saves chopping.

LaDoIceVita · 05/02/2022 20:25

Aldi have leek, spinach and cheese lattices in the freezer section that are good

Aldi also do cheese, potato and spring onion Crispakes which are very nice and their vegetable burgers and vegetable fingers are the best I've tried.

Camomila · 05/02/2022 20:25

I bought some nice frozen Calamari recently - I think it was from Aldi, may have been from Asda.

Frozen soffritto mix is my favourite though, makes ragu so much quicker to make.

lugeforlife · 05/02/2022 20:26

Waitrose do a frozen diced celeriac which makes lovely mash. So much easier than preparing one

honeyytoast · 05/02/2022 20:27

Fish cakes, and quorn nuggets, I cut them up in salads

JaceLancs · 05/02/2022 20:28

Very boring but my favourite is frozen fruit
Raspberries or a forest fruit mixture
Great with a meringue and some crème fraiche
With yoghurt or as a topping on porridge for breakfast
I buy low fat custard and microwave with the fruit

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 05/02/2022 20:28

Ps, I mostly use my freezer for things I've made as a ready meal e.g. soups/stews/curries/pasta sauces etc.

AutomaticMoon · 05/02/2022 20:29

Frozen cherries (esp. Morello 🤤) for lovely hungarian cherry cake.

SeeminglyOblivious · 05/02/2022 20:29

I hate the bags of frozen, cubed mixed veg for eating - but they make a great soup!

I buy them a lot because they're ridiculously cheap.

Fry onion and garlic in a big pot. Whap in two bags of frozen mixed veg and add stock, mixed herbs, season. Boil for half an hour and stick a hand blender in it - lovely soup for pennies.

Battered haddock/cod portions
Onion rings
French fries ( fry them though don’t oven)
Aldi stuffed crust takeaway style pizza
Another vote for frozen mash from me
Yorkshire puddings ( much easier when you’ve got too much stuff In oven to juggle for fresh and they cook in few mins and one less tin to wash/soak Wink )
‘No beef’ Cornish pasties Aldi
Frozen berries, cheaper than fresh and ideal for cooling down bowls of hot porridge!
Frozen sweet corn, cheaper than tinned and less waste if you only need a bit at a time.
Waffles - you can even cook them in the toaster waffles beans and cheese is an easy snack for the kids to make themselves
Frozen veg - esp green beans you can’t tell them they’re not fresh

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/02/2022 20:31

Frozen mash.
Frozen veg - we get the mediterranean mixes, pea and sweetcorn mostly.
Frozen fruit for smoothies or to add to things like porridge and cereal.

We also have normal stuff like chips, chicken dippers, pizzas etc. for quick and easy meals.

PinaColadaNeeded · 05/02/2022 20:34

Yes to the fish pie mix! my cheat tea is to top it with frozen peas, throw a tub of cream (Elmlea is fine!) a pinch of garlic powder and top with mash. I use idaho mash, which is really nice. If I'm being fancy I might chuck in a hand full of prawns..... 45 mins later its all done and tastes like you've slaved for hours rather than 5 minutes!

Mediterranean Roast veg is a great base for a veggie lasagna, but its very versatile and makes a change from the usual frozen veg as a side dish.

Pre cooked chicken strips are fab for a quick curry or stir fry.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 05/02/2022 20:35

Frozen leeks for soup.

Frozen sweet potato fries.

Frozen Brussels sprouts roasted with garlic.

Feedmepancakes · 05/02/2022 20:36

I am a huge fan of frozen veg for adding to my cooking. I always have frozen chopped garlic, onions, and mixed peppers ready to be added. And surely everyone loves frozen peas?

Frozen fruit is great in a smoothie, and I'm sure I've used it in baking before too.

Dumpyandabdabs · 05/02/2022 20:38

I was going to suggest spinach and peppers too. Great for curries or chilli. Fruit wise Aldi do blueberries, mango and sour cherries which are lovely mixed into Cereal/porridge or yoghurt.

DockOTheBay · 05/02/2022 20:41

Frozen onion is great.
Asda do a "base mix" which is carrot celery and onion. Great as a base for chilli, shepherd's pie, pasta sauce etc.
Butternut squash and sweet potato are good frozen. I never use a whole squash and end up throwing some out otherwise

TiddleTaddleTat · 05/02/2022 20:44

Frozen berries - raspberries, mixed berries, blueberries
Frozen fish - wild salmon, pollock, fish pie mix
Frozen mashed potato - useful for pie toppings
Frozen spinach - for adding to curries , omelettes etc

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/02/2022 20:44

Northern pizza co , pizza dough. You just leave it out on the kitchen counter in the morning and by 5pm it’s defrosted and “active”. Roll out and sprinkle with toppings. Easy. Kids enjoy customising the toppings.

oopsIdiditagaintoo · 05/02/2022 20:45

Aldi also do cheese, potato and spring onion Crispakes

Thanks, I'll have a look for those next week.

Coffeetree · 05/02/2022 20:45

Morrisons do some amazing frozen salads. Greek salad and a pasta salad. Really cheap and you can juj them up with fresh herbs or whatever.

Murderinparadise · 05/02/2022 20:45

I have many of the things mentioned above in my freezer. One of my favourites is frozen cauliflower cheese, but I use it in soup. I make “white veg” soup, so (frozen) onion, leeks, maybe parsnips or potatoes if they are in the fridge, sometimes fresh cauliflower. Then at the end throw in the frozen cauli cheese, cook for a little while and blitz. Really adds to the soup.

MerryMarigold · 05/02/2022 20:46

My freezer basics are:
💗 Fruit for smoothies (mango, pineapple, raspberries, strawberry and banana etc.)
💗 Veg I blend into tinned tomatoes as a pasta sauce, spag bol base, meatball base, chilli con carne base. Celery (freeze from fresh, do my own), pepper, mushroom, courgette, spinach.
💗 Veg I steam - sweetcorn, peas
💗 Frozen fish. Always have salmon! Battered fish for oven (get chips from chippy, cheap takeaway!).
💗 Coriander, ginger, garlic, chilli (you can get this from various supermarkets or freeze own from fresh. I usually buy it and do my own coriander from large bunches).

LadyEloise1 · 05/02/2022 20:46

Frozen cherries and frozen raspberries for my porridge in the morning. Delicious

Coffeetree · 05/02/2022 20:47

@TiddleTaddleTat

Frozen berries - raspberries, mixed berries, blueberries Frozen fish - wild salmon, pollock, fish pie mix Frozen mashed potato - useful for pie toppings Frozen spinach - for adding to curries , omelettes etc
Is there a good brand for frozen fish? The only frozen fish I've found has been nasty.
Abra1d1 · 05/02/2022 20:49

Roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Roast in oven with gnocchi and olive oil and herbs. Add balsamic vinegar and Parmesan. Quick midweek meal. Gnocchi last for ages too in the cupboards.
