to find septagenarian rock stars on DC's clothes odd?

I was looking for some new tops for DC online this morning, H&M and Next. I always find it so strange that there are numerous Rolling Stones, ACDC, Guns and Roses... tops for kids. They were all well past their prime when I was young, so why would my DC wear their merchandise.

Any music that they release now is dire and I don't want my DC's advertising for rich and powerful men. I hate random slogans on clothes anyway, but this seems worse.

AIBU?

Blondie for me meant power because of the way she stared into the camera like she didn’t give a shit if a man approved or not.

But I was 13/16 not 6 so fair point.

SadWordlePlayer · 05/02/2022 11:31

I actually work teaching kids to play AC/DC - I see their 70s machismo and I steal it to do good things :)

It’s like stealing the good bits from religion

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/02/2022 11:32

@Awumminnscotland
surely your dad was minding it was the male neighbour buying you a gift in the first place?

BoredZelda · 05/02/2022 11:33

My daughter is an AC/DC fan. Loves guns and roses, also has a Bon Jovi t-shirt. I’d rather she wore that than a “daddy’s little princess” T-shirt.

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 11:34

@Awumminnscotland, thank you. That's interesting, I have a DD on the road to an autism diagnosis and I think it probably comes from me rather than DH. Interesting to hear about your dad.

Yes YABU to question something so mind-numbing and easily avoided.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 05/02/2022 11:35

My oldest boy's clothes are made up of Back to the future, star trek, princess bride and minecraft t-shirts because those are the things he likes. Does it matter if a lot of his tastes are "old"?

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 05/02/2022 11:36

I would totally make my dd wear a Nirvana t-shirt if l could find one!

Just don't buy them op.

Nephilim77 · 05/02/2022 11:41

Past their prime???? Pfft!! These bands (legends) are still remembered and loved by all ages, 50 years later!! Must be pretty cool parents to educate their kids of these classic giants of music. Don’t think we’ll be seeing T-shirts of the likes of Little Mix or Ariana Grande 50 years from now!

Interviewdisaster · 05/02/2022 11:45

DD is 9 and her favourite item of clothing is her Beatles T-shirt. We’ve spoken about how the Beatles all (with the possible exception of Paul) treated their wives / girlfriends very badly, but she can still enjoy their music. I personally think it’s okay to separate art from the actions of the artist, but I know that lots of other people don’t.

cherryonthecakes · 05/02/2022 11:46

@SadWordlePlayer

“Also, why is it so difficult to under that kids are into the same music as the parents and gparents because they grew up listening it to and actually like it. “

Because it used to be the principle cultural signifier of youth culture and rebellion

I'm assuming that the OP is referring to very young kids. Ime teens still listen to music that parents aren't keen on - my ds listens to rap and grime which isn't something I'd choose to listen to myself
suckingonchillidogs · 05/02/2022 11:48

Kate Bush was a novelty act?? Bloody hell

SadWordlePlayer · 05/02/2022 11:50

Fair point cherry.

I guess these images mean different things to different people at different ages and depending whether it is current or from a previous generation for them

Interviewdisaster · 05/02/2022 11:50

Kate Bush is a legend!

JudyGemstone · 05/02/2022 11:53

Did the stones and AC/DC treat women badly? Mick might have shagged around a bit but so what?

He never beat his wife like say John Lennon. Or sexually assaulted anyone.

Charlie Watts (rip ❤️) had a very long and happy marriage, Keith’s been with Patti for more than 40 years.

My daughter has nirvana and fleetwood mac t-shirts but she’s 14 so chose them herself as she likes the music.

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoorNeil · 05/02/2022 11:55

Your children may not get a choice in what they wear but a lot do..... My dc loved all the bands mentioned when they were kids and still do. Hell the last Metallica concert I went to had loads of young kids there having an absolute blast.

Sounds to me like you need to take the thistle out your arse and start living a little.

MermaidEyes · 05/02/2022 11:55

I don't see how band t shirts are any different to kids wearing, say, Star wars t shirts? Isn't that just giving money to rich powerful men too? My kids are teens now and choose to wear GnR, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana t shirts, because they grew up with the music and would choose it over today's current shite offerings.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2022 11:57

Yabu.

I wouldn't buy them either because DC don't listen to them and I'm not a fan. But if they did a Tshirt with the Go-Go's on (Belinda Carlisle's band) I would because they like them (blame DH). My friend listens to Tolling Stones etc, their kids like it, they'd like the t-shirts.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 05/02/2022 12:00

‘DD is 9 and her favourite item of clothing is her Beatles T-shirt. We’ve spoken about how the Beatles all (with the possible exception of Paul) treated their wives / girlfriends very badly’

Sure you did! So you bought a Beatles t-shirt for a 9 year old and then spoke to said 9 year old about how the band treated their wives badly like in some American 80s sitcom moral message ending style. Sure you did. This genuinely made me laugh out loud.

Glittertwins · 05/02/2022 12:13

My DS certainly had a day in what he wore, he likes The Ramones and he likes GnR, even when very young as that's what he's been brought up to (some stuff censored 😉). He loves his band t-shirts.

Interviewdisaster · 05/02/2022 12:16

Well obviously it didn’t happen in the exact order Hmm She watched the Yellow Submarine cartoon, fell in love with the animation and the songs, learned that they were a real band and asked me who my favourite Beatles were. I told that while I respected his talent, I thought John Lennon was a terrible person, and she asked me why. It went from there. The T-shirt came later because, as I say, I have no problem separating art from its creator and I want her to take the same approach. Hopefully then when she grows up she won’t be tying herself in knots trying to justify loving the Harry Potter books when their author is apparently the antichrist* like half of Twitter, or holding Yoko Ono responsible for breaking up the Beatles so she can go on idolising Lennon like so many grown up misogynists who should know better.

  • FTR, I don’t think JKR is the antichrist.
TheHoptimist · 05/02/2022 12:21

I stay in a hotel where very room has a picture of Mick Jagger

Self confessed paedophile who wrote about sex with a 15 year old.
Would want him on any clothing tbh

Vanillaradio · 05/02/2022 12:38

Ds had a fab G n'R t-shirt when he was a baby with Sweet Child O' Mine on. And they were definitely not past their prime in my youth - they were one of the biggest bands around (I'm guessing I'm a bit older than op but my ds is only 8 so it's not entirely unlikely that G n R fans would have small children) I bought him t-shirts that I liked when he was a baby as he didn't have much of an opinion which included a couple with bands on. He gets to choose now but as he listens to amongst other things The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel he would be more than happy to wear a T-shirt with any of these.

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 12:42

Exactly @SleepingStandingUp! They don't do Go-Go's T-shirts!

I love music, I play an instrument and was in a band in the 90s, I also used to listen to my parents' records. None of what I find weird has to do with whether I like the music.
