to find septagenarian rock stars on DC's clothes odd?

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 09:55

I was looking for some new tops for DC online this morning, H&M and Next. I always find it so strange that there are numerous Rolling Stones, ACDC, Guns and Roses... tops for kids. They were all well past their prime when I was young, so why would my DC wear their merchandise.

Any music that they release now is dire and I don't want my DC's advertising for rich and powerful men. I hate random slogans on clothes anyway, but this seems worse.

AIBU?

Does wearing Primark mean your kids are promoting child labour and zero hour contracts ? If your daughter wears pink and sequins is she promoting gender stereotyping?

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 11:06

I'm not wanting to cancel or ban anything. I find it disheartening that people make these choices. I don't want to stop people or even businesses making those choices, but I do wish they would stop.

I didn't realise being a feminist meant you can be agist and sexist @Tofindthisodd

GirlInACountrySong · 05/02/2022 11:07

What's wrong with older people on shirts? Bit ageist complaining about age

Who would you like to see? You mention Kate bush and Joni Mitchell ... who else?

Samcro · 05/02/2022 11:08

sounds like you want to cancel all men from the 60/70s OP.

SadWordlePlayer · 05/02/2022 11:09

“You don't see Joni Mitchell or Kate Bush tops in Next or H&M.”

It is Interesting! Ponder away OP :)

Given that Kate Bush upstaged Elton John at his own wedding (he said “all anyone wanted to do was meet Kate Bush) I don’t think selling tickets would present a challenge for her....

It doesn't. Feminism is used out of context left right and centre on MN.

I don't think we should celebrate, promote or fund icons of an era where abuse of women and girls was accepted and expected. Particularly when those icons have trampled on women themselves. We still live in that society to a large extent and I'm not very tolerant of it.

Best stop selling / promoting the Bible then.

And pretty much every other religious text.

I totally agree @iklboo.

What?

So you want people to stop buying anything related to an entire ERA based on the fact that some of them were shitty people?

Why don't we all just dress in plain beige and have done with it? Hmm

Submariner · 05/02/2022 11:13

@Tofindthisodd

I really like Guns and Roses and Nirvana, it's not about that at all. I'm a feminist *@Samcro* and you're right, I probably am sexist. My default is not NAMALT, but MMALT (most men). This is definitely a result of my own traumatic experiences.

It is not lighthearted IMO and not just a case of don't buy it. We have to question this stuff if we want things to be better, I think.

I don't really understand this comment about a logo on a t-shirt when a quick google of H&M and Next shows that buying from such places is likely promoting and funding the current abuse of women and girls. That would be the first thing I would question before I was worried about whether Mick Jagger was going to make 10p off a t-shirt. Are you tolerant of it if it's happening on the other side of the world?

Lol gatekeeping Nirvana and The Ramones is a bit daft, surely? If you wanted to be cooler than thou, surely you'd want to go for Bleach...

SprayedWithDettol · 05/02/2022 11:15

WTAF am I reading?

As for Kate Bush being a novelty act, I have no words.

SadWordlePlayer · 05/02/2022 11:16

OP I “do” music and it perplexed me for a long time that teenagers are into their parents’ and grandparents’ music.

I then heard an old interview with David Bowie where he said that had he been young in the 90s he’d have been into computers not music.

I think thing 1 in the pondering is that music simply isn’t the cultural force it was between 1955 and 1990 (just as string quartets are not the cultural force they were between 1790 and 1945)

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 11:17

@Submariner, I completely get your point that there are more pressing concerns, but they're not mutually exclusive.

Elton on Kate Bush:

“She’s a mystery, a beautiful mystery”

Mrstamborineman · 05/02/2022 11:17

It’s not for the child exactly, it’s the parents nostalgia. I like it, especially “sweet child of mine”

Submariner · 05/02/2022 11:18

I know they're not mutually exclusive, but you still have a choice not to shop there?

Mrstamborineman · 05/02/2022 11:20

Also, why is it so difficult to under that kids are into the same music as the parents and gparents because they grew up listening it to and actually like it.
A lot of music now is shit… not said by me…. My dc aged 19

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 05/02/2022 11:23

Try telling my 10 year old what to wear. He's had his own opinion on clothes since he was old enough to talk

He has plenty of older band merch , probably because he's really close to his 19 year old brother who has a record collection goingvback to the 50s

Which reminds me, he borrowed my new nirvana top a few months ago and still hasn't given it back

He'd probably still be wearing my the who DMs if his feet hadn't gotten so big

SadWordlePlayer · 05/02/2022 11:23

“Also, why is it so difficult to under that kids are into the same music as the parents and gparents because they grew up listening it to and actually like it. “

Because it used to be the principle cultural signifier of youth culture and rebellion

Awumminnscotland · 05/02/2022 11:25

@Tofindthisodd
Oh OP you’re getting such a hammering on here! And look! It’s had the desired effect to shut you up and make you think you’re completely out of order and unreasonable to have critical thinking skills and to actually voice them.
I completely agree with your opinions on this.
I’m 50 with a six year old daughter with autism and is socially vulnerable in other ways. I’ll admit my first thought was Ooh Blondie T-shirt , cool. But then I questioned the effect of a child, especially a female wearing this. For my child it would give people an easy way to identify with them and gain their trust.
This is not new, crazy or paranoid thinking. It’s realist thinking. My Dad was a social worker in the 60s to 80s and he was concerned when a male neighbour bought me a Duran Duran T-shirt. I thought it was an over reaction for years but now I totally get it.

SpinsForGin · 05/02/2022 11:26

What a bizarre way to view band t shirts ....

FYI Primark used to sell blondie and No Doubt t shirts 🤷🏼‍♀️

GirlInACountrySong · 05/02/2022 11:28

I would never wear a Kate bush t shirt because sorry but her music is dire!
