to find septagenarian rock stars on DC's clothes odd?

I was looking for some new tops for DC online this morning, H&M and Next. I always find it so strange that there are numerous Rolling Stones, ACDC, Guns and Roses... tops for kids. They were all well past their prime when I was young, so why would my DC wear their merchandise.

Any music that they release now is dire and I don't want my DC's advertising for rich and powerful men. I hate random slogans on clothes anyway, but this seems worse.

AIBU?

@Tofindthisodd

Not just now *@Poetnojo*, I've always found this kind of merchandise aggressive and alienating. I remember playboy t shirts for teen and tween girls when I was younger. This kind of stuff feels really pervasive to me.
A rock band and a soft porn mag are really not the same thing, though, are they? A kid in a Ramones t-shirt isn’t being sexualised like a kid in a Playboy t-shirt.

If you’re that worried about the patriarchy, don’t shop at massive global corporations in the first place. That would have more impact than fretting about someone else’s child wearing a band t-shirt.

Buy something else then. It's really that simple .

@Tofindthisodd

I'm not offended either, I can cope with it fine. I just question it.
Do you not share any of your music or film or TV tastes with your children?

My childhood was full of music and shows from way before my time - I thought that was normal?

My favourite songs as as a child were mainly by The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel and I grew up in the nineties!

LBOCS2 · 05/02/2022 10:32

Is it better or worse than having more modern rock bands on T-shirts for kids? Mine have been known to wear Ghost T-shirts and DD2 had an AFI baby grow (and a Download one we picked up when she was about 18mo).

Where is the line?

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 10:33

I think it's alienating to women and people who've had shit fathers to promote powerful men that have treated their wives, mothers of their children and children really badly.

These men don't need your money. I think we should avoid funding mysoginistic shits where it is obvious. I realise we are funding terrible people all the time, but don't advertise it blatantly.

I'm obviously alone in this. Grin. I thought I may find one or two kindred spirits. This is the way my brain work unfortunately. I see strangeness everywhere.

@fairylightsandwaxmelts, they won't watch Annie or Mary Poppins, believe me I've tried. Grin

Personally, I think it odd and kind of both covertly and aggressively patriarchal that you can get rich powerful man merchandise for your toddler

I think you're overthinking it just a tad. You can also get Britney Spears tops, Blondie, Mandonna, Friends. In the same way I wore a Beatles top when I was 17.

Tereseta · 05/02/2022 10:37

Can't see a problem with it, may be this is more to your taste?
My little girl loves to listen to Nirvana in the car and has their tshirt. Personal taste at end of the day.

Samcro · 05/02/2022 10:38

they are good bands.
why does everything have to be about "oh but they are men"
my dd loves wearing rolling stones stuff(and metal stuff)
you really have too much time on your hand op and are very sexist.

BuickMcKane · 05/02/2022 10:43

Sorry, what? Members of Queen have been happily married for donkeys years as have KISS. That's just 2 off the top of my head.

Do you actually know anything about these men or are you just projecting?

Yazmindahenn · 05/02/2022 10:43

That is utterly ridiculous.

Your are going out of your way to be offended at literally nothing.

Women who have had shit fathers? Are you for real? That's all the music that my MOTHER (FEMALE) listened to.

I have my mum's taste in music, as does my 2 sisters, not our dad who lets face it, was an arsehole when we were growing up.

I listen to Queen, so does my 2 year old. If there was a Queen t-shirt I liked in his size, I would put it on him, do you find that abusive?

Honestly grow up and join the rest of us in the real world and stop making up problems that just do not exist.

BuickMcKane · 05/02/2022 10:49

These are the bands I listen to btw, so I know plenty about them. And my DC love them too. You're trying to make an issue where there isn't one.

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 10:51

I really like Guns and Roses and Nirvana, it's not about that at all. I'm a feminist @Samcro and you're right, I probably am sexist. My default is not NAMALT, but MMALT (most men). This is definitely a result of my own traumatic experiences.

I don't think we should celebrate, promote or fund icons of an era where abuse of women and girls was accepted and expected. Particularly when those icons have trampled on women themselves. We still live in that society to a large extent and I'm not very tolerant of it.

It is not lighthearted IMO and not just a case of don't buy it. We have to question this stuff if we want things to be better, I think.

@Tofindthisodd

No, my DC aren't wearing them, but children don't get a choice in what they wear. Personally, I think it odd and kind of both covertly and aggressively patriarchal that you can get rich powerful man merchandise for your toddler.

You don't see Joni Mitchell or Kate Bush tops in Next or H&M.

Kate Bush is a 70s/80s novelty act. You don’t get Joe Dolce t-shirts either.
Poetnojo · 05/02/2022 10:53

I've heard it all now, wearing a stones Tshirt is alienating to women and other people ( I assume you mean males) who have had shit men in their lives? Really??

And in what way is it aggressive like you've said?

Tofindthisodd · 05/02/2022 10:53

I accept that I see these things very differently to everyone else. It is useful to know just how much so! I haven't ever said any of this stuff about T-shirts IRL and I'm not about to start now. Shock

children don't get a choice in what they wear

This is another thing that is easy to solve. Give your children a choice in what they wear!

(Do people seriously not let kids choose their own clothes? Hmm)

Poetnojo · 05/02/2022 10:57

Banning anything pre last week is going to make things better somehow?

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 05/02/2022 11:01

For me it’s not the sexism angle at all. It’s more to do with parents trying to score cool points by pretending their kids love the Ramones. We know 5 year olds don’t love the Ramones no matter how much people try and claim as much.

I’d believe it more if the kids wore a BTS t-shirt but then the parents don’t win cool points. So try hard and transparent with it.

BuickMcKane · 05/02/2022 11:02

This sexist cancel culture bullshit needs to stop, quite frankly. It's not feminism by any stretch of the imagination.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/02/2022 11:02

what about The Ramones?

it is just merchandise

do The Stones actually get anything?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/02/2022 11:02

in fact it isnt even merchandise, not official anyway

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/02/2022 11:03

Ramones T shirts used to be on sale in Primark

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 05/02/2022 11:04

Also I see more and more little kids wearing Nirvana t-shirts. It’s only because the 90s are in now and the parents want to look cool. Ask the kid or even their parents (who were probably about 5 when Nevermind came out) to sing even the first verse of Lithium without having to Google the lyrics and they wouldn’t be able to do it. Guaranteed.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/02/2022 11:04

Kate Bush was not a novelty act, dont be ridiculous
