Mumsnetters bragging about how rich and important their husbands are

Ready to be flamed Grin

AIBU to find this very cringe? I’ve seen it a couple of times where the OP has asked a job/income question aimed at members of mumsnet (and often clearly wanting answers from women/mums) and within two or three posts there’s women (I assume) rushing on to say “I earn 26p but DH is a top secret VIP and earns £7 million an hour!” Often it really isn’t relevant Confused

Obviously this has no impact on my life but I just find it odd and cringey that instead of being proud of their own achievements (whatever they may be) they’re rushing to boast about what a high roller hubby is.

Only adding this as I know I’ll be accused of being jealous but my husband to be is a high earner himself, I just don’t feel the need to constantly mention it!

unici5 Ah. The other place.

bindud · 04/02/2022 17:38

It's more annoying when an poster asks "how did you get your high salaried role or how do you balance it with kids" & posters reply well DH does X.

I also find it weird how so many people seem to earn "peanuts" but are with partners who earn 100k plus. That's not reflective of my reality.

couldhavenotcouldof22 · 04/02/2022 17:40

Well I'm proud to say I'm just as rich and important as him because we have the same job and actually my salary is slightly higher!

MeSanniesareBrannies · 04/02/2022 17:42

@bindud I suppose it could be relative peanuts. If you earn £80K, that’s a pretty decent salary, but if your DP earns £250K, you might say you earn peanuts? At least, that’s the case with people I know.

Or the posters in question could just be fibbing. Grin

GarlandsinGreece · 04/02/2022 17:44

I’ve literally never seen this, except on posts where people are discussing household income.

RosieGuacamosie · 04/02/2022 17:49

@MeSanniesareBrannies With every comment, your total lack of self awareness becomes more unbelievable

Yes? That’s ASD Confused

HardbackWriter · 04/02/2022 17:53

In fairness, you can be way more subtle about it, like 'Our eyes met across a crowded JCR bop, and later he peeled off my commoner's gown in ChCh Meadow.' grin

Isn't that boasting about your own education? A similar but slightly different thing. Much like Oxford and my own university, Cambridge. I never mention it, of course, but was literally forced to because my post would simply make no sense otherwise.

TurretGunner · 04/02/2022 17:55

My total lack of self awareness is more unbelievable than that. I have frequently said stuff that I thought was good but was not.

GarlandsinGreece · 04/02/2022 17:57

@bindud, it depends on where you live. While there are definitely women earning six- and seven-figures in my town, the reality is that in the main the men are extremely high earners—portfolio managers, BigLaw, CEO/CFOs—while women are maybe doctors, teachers, have their own businesses etc. or are SAHM. I think we still have a really long way to go before there’s true parity.

I’m not quite sure how to put this, but…my husband is kind of a big deal…he's very important. He has many leather-bound books and his office smells of rich mahogany.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 04/02/2022 18:02

I can’t tell which posts are real and which are jokes. Clearly didn’t go to the right university!

BoredZelda · 04/02/2022 18:02

I see way more posts where people talk about this happening than it actually happening.

I don’t have a husband. Or a husband to be.

😭

Viviennemary · 04/02/2022 18:05

Its cringey. Oh poor lil me only earns £1k a year. But luckily I have a DH who earns £250k plus.

@MmeD

😭

‘Husband to be’ does have a certain something extra to it
JessesMum777888 · 04/02/2022 18:10

I usually find when I point out my husband was in jail for 3 years so I did it all myself they usually shut up ;)

CailleachGranda · 04/02/2022 18:13

@Bushkin

Conversely if women post on those threads about their own high earning they are accused of lying - can’t win
Really? Never seen that
SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 04/02/2022 18:15

Is your husband Russell from New Girl? Grin m.youtube.com/watch?v=AWiZwQv-WEc
Changedmane · 04/02/2022 18:17

Conversely, I am sensing both men and well off men in disguise on threads. They try to hide their identity but their wording and utter lack of comprehension of certain things female/working class is blindingly obvious. I spotted two on the Bank of England threads. To be fair, they could “just” have been Daily Mail journos.

bindud · 04/02/2022 18:18

@MeSanniesareBrannies normally they say I earn peanuts & give an example eg 10k but you're correct that perspectives can be different.

@GarlandsinGreece Im in London & maybe it's an age/location thing but I don't know any high earning men with partners who work in a job on NMW. Similarly to you the ones I know are married to doctors, teachers or stay at home.

PickledOnionSandwich · 04/02/2022 18:19

But you ARE mentioning it. You’ve started an entire thread about it to stealth boast Biscuit
